1991 Pontiac Grand Prix Exterior lighting Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the exterior lighting system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Exterior lighting reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

THE ALTERNATOR/STARTER GO OUT EVERY 6 MONTHS, THE FUEL PUMP HAS BEEN REPLACED 8 TIMES, THE LEFT TURN SIGNAL DOES NOT BLINK, THE BRAKES GO OUT EVERY 6 MONTHS, I THINK THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE BRAKE SYSTEM. THE POWER STEERING HAS TO BE REFILLED EVERY 100 MILES. THE DRIVERS SIDE POWER WINDOW DOES NOT WORK. THE WINDOW IS DOWN ABOUT AN INCH AND WILL NOT GO UP OR DOWN.

INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING HEADLIGHTS GO OFF FOR A COUPLE OF SECONDS TO A MINUTE, AND THEN GO BACK ON. THIS HAPPENS WITHOUT ANY KIND OF WARNING. DEALER WAS NOTIFIED ABOUT THE PROBLEM. DEALER STATED THAT NO OPEN RECALL WAS ISSUED ON THE VEHICLE. PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN CORRECTED. *AK

WHILE DRIVING ON THE ROAD AT 65 MPH, THE HEADLIGHTS FAILED;THE DRIVING LIGHTS ALSO FAILED AT THE SAME TIME. I CHECKED WITH THE MANUFACTURER ABOUT A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM AND THERE WAS NONE LISTED FOR THIS YEAR. THERE WAS A RECALL FOR SIMILAR PROBLEM THAT ONLY WENT BACK TO THE 1994 MODEL. THE SERVICE MANAGER AT DEALRSHIP INFORMED ME THAT THIS WAS A FAIRLY COMMON OCCURANCE IN GRAND PRIXS,OLDS CUTLESS,AND WHATEVER THE BUICK MODEL BASED ON THE SAME PLATFORM IS. THEY INDICATED THAT IT IS A FAULTY HI/LOW BEAM SWITCH IN THE STALK WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL. APPARENTLY NOT ENOUGH OF THESE HAVE BEEN REPORTED IN MY MODEL YEAR TO EFFECT A RECALL, BUT THAT DOESN'T MAKE IT ANY LESS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
