What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request?: The right-side tailgate hinge assembly on my 2019 Ram 2500 failed and became increasingly difficult to operate. The tailgate now requires excessive force to open and close throughout its entire range of motion. An independent body shop inspected the vehicle and determined that the hinge assembly requires replacement. The vehicle and failed component are available for inspection upon request. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The failure significantly affects the normal operation of the tailgate and requires excessive force to open and close. This creates a risk of injury while operating the tailgate and raises concerns regarding the continued safe operation of the tailgate assembly. The failure of a primary tailgate support component could also affect the tailgate's ability to function as intended. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes. The problem was inspected and confirmed by an independent body shop. The shop determined that the tailgate hinge assembly has failed and requires replacement. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others? The vehicle has been inspected by an independent body shop. At this time, the vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. Were there any warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No warning lamps, messages, or diagnostic indicators were present. The only symptom was a progressive increase in the force required to open and close the tailgate. I started to notice the issue about a year ago. Since then, the condition gradually worsened over time to the point where when I open it and the tailgate pops out of position.

My rear back window is leaking into the cab. Water comes in around the rear headliner and down onto the seats. This is a known issue on 2019+ Ram trucks with the same backlite design — cracked upper frame and failed seal causing water intrusion.

In addition, the contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel independently turned to the left. Upon further inspection, the contact's husband noticed that there was a bolt that was loosened on the driver’s side of the steering gearbox. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed with a hairline fracture on the subframe due to rust. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000. The VIN was not available.

The contact called on behalf of the owner of a 2019 Ram 2500. The contact stated that while driving 60 MPH in rainy weather, the windshield wipers became inoperable, causing the contact to slow down significantly to exit the expressway. The contact was able to drive to the residence. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the totally integrated power module (TIPM) had failed, causing the body control module (BCM) to fail. The dealer replaced the TIPM and BCM. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 87,000.

Front parking sensors always being disabled due to something. Keeps saying wipe sensors. Even after going through wash bays. Tailgate has been opening on its own multiple times while driving, while going through car wash, and just sitting still. Try to close it, and it pops back open instantly. Have to do this several times and hope it stays closed. Now the tailgate won't open at all via the handle. You must use the remote or in cab button. What's annoying and dangerous is it opening while hauling items and it opens with out you knowing driving down the road. I have lost items on the highway a few times. Furthermore, the fact that there is no warning device on the dash to indicate it's open is a very serious issue. With these electronic tailgates, it should be a standard that there is a open gate indicator to warn drivers. It's there for every other door, why not the bed door?

Rear window mass water leak. Ram currently has a recall for certain models leaking rear window (spoke to Ram and my vehicle does not fall under the recall). There is also a class action lawsuit regarding the leaking rear windows on Ram. My concern is an electrical fire as I am driving due to the amount of water I found in the cab. As well as the mold and oder it's going to create.

The tailgate has issues closing and the supports meaning the wire that supports the tailgates when it is deployed one will have tension on it and the other is loose. The tailgate support cables are the same length. I think it has to do with the bed being worked. I have reported it to Huffines dodge dealer and they said there is no fix. The tale gate has opened when in use due to the latch / tail gate not closing correctly because of the out of square bed.

THIS IS MY SECOND SUBMITTED COMPLAINT ABOUT THE TAILGATE COMING OPEN WHILE DRIVING AND TOWING. HAVE MADE TWO COMPLAINTS TO CHRYSLER AND TAKEN TO DEALER. HOWEVER, NOTHING IS BEING DONE BECAUSE THEY DRIVE IT 10 MILES AND "CAN NOT REPLICATE". EVEN THOUGH THEY ACKNOWLEDGE EXTENSIVE RECALL HISTORY ON EARLIER MODELS FOR SAME PROBLEM. I HAVE NOW DAMAGED MY TRUCK WITH 5K MILES ON IT AND MY CAMPER WHEN IT CAME OPEN IN TOW.

OUR TAILGATE HAS OPENED ON ITS OWN 4 TIMES WHILE WE WERE DRIVING SINCE WE HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE. IT ALSO HAS SHOWN A NOTIFICATION ON THE DASH THAT THE TAILGATE IS OPEN, BUT WHEN CHECKED IT IS CLOSED. I HAVE A VIDEO OF THIS, BUT I DON'T KNOW IF I CAN UPLOAD IT. WE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE IN LATE 2019 AND THE FIRST EVENT WAS IN MARCH 2020, AND IT CAUSED SCRATCHES ON THE PLASTIC TOP PART OF THE TAILGATE, AS IT HIT THE TONGUE JACK OF OUR CAMPER. THE FIRST TIME, WE THOUGHT MAYBE WE HADN'T CLOSED IT HARD ENOUGH, SO WE HAVE ALWAYS MADE A POINT TO MAKE SURE IT WAS SHUT TIGHT. THE SECOND TIME WAS ON MARCH 14, 2020. THE THIRD TIME WAS JUNE 20, 2020 AND IT CAUSED DAMAGE TO OUR TAILGATE. WE WERE IN A PARKING LOT MAKING A TURN AND THE TAILGATE OPENED, HITTING THE PROPANE TANK OF OUR TOW BEHIND CAMPER. IT DENTED THE TAILGATE AND DAMAGED THE PROPANE TANK. I HAPPENED AGAIN ON JULY 18, 2020. IT OPENS ON ITS OWN, AND IT IS INTERMITTENT. I KNOW THAT IT HAPPENED ONCE WHEN WE WERE TURNING AND DRIVING UNDER 10 MPH, BECAUSE THAT IS WHEN/WHY THE BODY DAMAGE HAPPENED. THIS CREATES AN EXTREMELY UNSAFE CONDITION AS WELL BECAUSE SOMETHING COULD FALL FROM OUR TRUCK BED IF THE TAILGATE OPENS WHILE WE ARE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY, POSSIBLY KILLING SOMEONE OR CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. WE HAVE REPORTED IT TO CHRYSLER TWICE (MOST RECENT CASE NUMBER 76765917). WE HAVE TAKEN IT IN TWICE TO THE DEALER AFTER IT HAPPENED (MOST RECENTLY ON 7/22/2020). AND THEY CANNOT REPLICATE IT SO NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. CHRYSLER ADVISED ME TO CONTACT CORPORATE VIA LETTER.
