2020 RAM 3500 Brakes Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the brake system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Brakes reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

ABS System Failure HCU/ABS Module need to be replaced. This does not only occur on 2017-2018 RAM trucks. Please expand the investigation to include at least 2020 as well. Parts have been discontinued and new ones are not available yet. RAM knows there is a problem. They need to recall this safety issue.

Last week this took place: 2020 Ram 3500 Dual rear wheels AISON transmission is outfitted with factory trailer brake module. Was hauling a horse trailer near 30,000 lbs to a horse show, caravaning with crew pulling another horse trailer about the same weight with a 2020 Ram 3500 (Vin #3C63RRML6LG642630 (see separate complaint)). All connections checked before departure. Unlike the other Ram in the caravan, No ABS warning light activated prior to the failure. When braking, no trailer brakes engaged. Then checked hand paddles on the factory trailer brake module and the hand paddles activated the trailer brakes. Took it into the dealership to check codes and they said none appeared or were somehow reset. There was excessive heat during this trip and the failure occurred in both RAM 3500 vehicles during the same travel segment within minutes of the other.

The contact owns a 2020 Ram 3500. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the trailer brakes failed intermittently while the brake pedal was depressed. The turn signals and brake lights also failed to function properly. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed that the rear bumper brake plugs were installed incorrectly causing water to fill the brake plugs. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the brake plugs were installed and functioned as intended. The manufacturer suggested that the vehicle be taken to another dealer to be diagnosed. The failure mileage was 7,000.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
