What this recall covers

NHTSA's campaign record, quoted as published

The defect

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: TRUCKS. AN INCORRECT GRADE 5 FLANGE-NUT WAS INSTALLED IN PLACE OF A GRADE 8 NUT AND FLAT WASHER ON THE YOKE PINCH BOLT THAT HOLDS THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE LOWER END OF THE I-SHAFT AND THE STEERING GEAR.

The risk

IF THE PINCH BOLT NUT EXPERIENCES THREAD STRIPPING, THE YOKE CONNECTION OF THE STEERING SHAFT TO THE STEERING GEAR BOX COULD FAIL AND POSSIBLY RESULT IN LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL.

The remedy

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE GRADE 5 PINCH BOLT NUT WITH THE CORRECT GRADE 8 NUT AND WASHER ON ALL VEHICLES. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN DECEMBER 17, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT INTERNATIONAL AT 1-800-448-7825.

Notes

ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).

A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
