The defect
Volvo Bus Corporation (Volvo Bus) is recalling certain model year 2008-2017 9700 buses manufactured January 7, 2008, to August 25, 2016. The affected vehicles are equipped with a power feed relay for the engine and transmission which may be undersized for the application, causing the relay to fail and the engine to stall.
The risk
An unexpected engine shutdown increases the risk of a crash.
The remedy
Volvo Bus will notify owners, and dealers will replace the existing relay with a larger, more robust, relay, free of charge. The recall began on December 20, 2016. Owners may contact Volvo Bus customer service at 1-877-773-8678. Volvo Bus' number for this recall is SR16-86.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
