The defect
Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Freightliner Custom Chassis XCL, XCP, XCR and XCS and 2015-2019 Custom Chassis XCM vehicles. The instrument panel brightness cannot be adjusted, possibly causing glare when driving at night. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 101, "Control and Displays."
The risk
Glare can reduce the driver's visibility of the road, thus increasing the risk of a crash.
The remedy
DTNA will notify owner, and dealers will update the software and processor, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on April 1, 2021. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712. DTNA's number for this recall is FL-859.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
