The defect: THE "CLAMSHELL" SEAT CONSTRUCTION FAILS TO CONFORM TO FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 222, "SCHOOL BUS SEATING AND CRASH PROTECTION". THE SEATS ARE NOT SOFT ENOUGH TO PROVIDE THE REQUIRED SURFACE CONTACT.
The remedy: ADDITIONAL MATERIAL WILL BE ADDED TO THE HEAD AREA OF THE SEATS TO INCREASE THE DEGREE OF SURFACE CONTACT.

The defect: THE LETTERING LOCATION FOR BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR LABELING FAILS TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 105, "HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEMS". THE REQUIREMENT STATES THAT THE LETTERING MUST BE VISIBLE BY DIRECT VIEW EITHER ON OR WITHIN 4 INCHES OF THE BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR FILLER CAP.
The remedy: DRAWINGS AND INSTRUCTIONS WILL BE SENT TO ENABLE OWNER TO REMOVE AND REINSTALL THE RESERVOIR CAP PROPERLY.

The defect: THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT IS NOT ACTIVATED WHEN THE PARKING BRAKE IS APPLIED AND THE IGNITION SWITCH IS IN THE "ON" POSITION. THIS CONSTITUTES A NON-COMPLIANCE TO FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 105, "HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEMS". ALSO, THE BRAKE LAMP CHECK FUNCTION IS INOPERABLE.
The remedy: DEALER WILL LENGTHEN THE WIRE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE PARKING BRAKE AND THE WIRING HARNESS TO ENSURE PROPER BRAKE LIGHT OPERATION. A GROUNDING WIRE WILL ALSO BE INSTALLED TO ENSURE PROPER OPERATION OF THE LAMP CHECK FUNCTION.

The defect: THE INVOLVED VEHICLES DO NOT COMPLY WITH FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 217, "BUS WINDOW RETENTION AND RELEASE". THE WINDOW EXITS ARE OF INSUFFICIENT SIZE AND THE EMERGENCY EXIT LOCATION AND OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS ARE IMPROPERLY IDENTIFIED.
The remedy: THE DEALER WILL ADJUST STOPS ON THE SLIDING WINDOWS TO ENLARGE THE OPENING AND PUSH-OUT SPLIT WINDOWS WILL BE INSTALLED IN PLACE OF STATIONARY WINDOWS WHERE REQUIRED. PROPER EMERGENCY EXIT IDENTIFICATION AND INSTRUCTION LABELS WILL ALSO BE INSTALLED.

The defect: THE GROSS AXLE WEIGHT RATING (GAWR) ON THE INVOLVED VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN INCORRECTLY CALCULATED AND THUS THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN EQUIPPED WITH REAR TIRES HAVING AN INSUFFICIENT PLY RATING FOR THE INTENDED LOAD REQUIREMENT. AS A RESULT, THESE VEHICLES DO NOT COMPLY TO FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 120, "TIRE SELECTION AND RIMS FOR MOTOR VEHICLES OTHER THAN PASSENGER CARS".
The remedy: DEALER WILL REPLACE REAR TIRES WITH TIRES OF THE CORRECT PLY RATING, WITHOUT CHARGE TO OWNER.

Safety recall
A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
Safety investigation
NHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
Manufacturer communication
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
