ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)

The defect: SUTPHEN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009 THROUGH 2012 VEHICLES AND EQUIPPED WITH MERITOR WABCO ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) MODULES. SEE THE LIST ABOVE FOR THE AFFECTED MODELS. UNDER CERTAIN ROAD AND DRIVING CONDITIONS, VEHICLE BODY ROLL AND ROAD INCLINATION CHARACTERISTICS MAY ADVERSELY AFFECT THE SLIP ANGLE CALCULATION OF THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) SYSTEM. THIS MIGHT CAUSE THE ESC TO PERCEIVE AN OVER STEERING SITUATION AND THEREFORE APPLY THE OUTER WHEEL BRAKE ON THE FRONT AXLE UNTIL THE VEHICLE IS PERCEIVED TO BE STABLE.
The risk: IF THE DRIVER IS SLOW TO REACT DURING THIS ESC INTERVENTION, THE VEHICLE MAY DEVIATE FROM THE INTENDED LINE OF TRAVEL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
The remedy: SUTPHEN IS WORKING WITH MERITOR WABCO TO REPLACE THE CONTROL MODULE FREE OF CHARGE. PLEASE SEE MERITOR WABCO DEFECT REPORT 11E-039. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON DECEMBER 16, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MERITOR ON TRACK CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-866-668-7221.

Driveshaft Failure

This investigation was opened after ODI was notified by a fire rescue authority that they had multiple driveshaft failures on four of their fire trucks. Allegedly, one driveshaft was ejected from the truck as it was being driven on the highway at a high rate of speed. Sutphen conducted an engineering evaluation and then decided to conduct a safety recall.They will: a.modify the cross members on the pre-2007 vehicles; b.conduct driveshaft re-phasing on the post-2007 vehicles; and c.replace the frame cross members.The action taken by Sutphen resolves this investigation. Accordingly, this investigation is closed.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

As communicated previously, an issue discovered in DiagnosticLink version 8.14SP1 was fixed with the release of 8.14SP3 on August26. The issue related to incorrect parameter data being sent to the server for some Chassis ECUs.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition.
