2019 Toyota Avalon Driver assistance Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the driver-assistance system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Driver assistance reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

On XXX I purchase the vehicle TOYOTA AVALON XSE, with VIN #: [XXX]. I purchase the vehicle at LARRY [XXX] AMERICAN TOYOTA in [XXX], with the LIEN [XXX] KIRTLAND FEDERAL CREDIT UNION BANK same city of [XXX]. I was told the vehicle had a 160 point check, yet when I check the THUMB DRIVE that was given to me by the business personnel. When I looked at the thumb drive, their were signed documents between myself and the business department of [XXX] American Toyota. I asked several of the salesperson if the car had a COMPREHENSIVE TUNE UP, all the replies were the vehicle had a 160 point check. So, I figured the vehicle had to have some kind of TUNE UP, the 160 point check consists of a WALKAROUND CHECKLIST. I even asked if the vehicle had any RECALLS, the salesperson, the business department, there was nothing, NO RECALLS. Even looking on this website it shows ZERO RECALLS. Well, on XXX the service advisor at [XXX] American Toyota, [XXX] who called the vehicle a " XXX CAR ". Mr. [XXX] gave me SERVICE HISTORY of all the problems the car with previous owners and myself. I took the time at home on July 9, 2026 and notice, there was an OPEN CAMPAIGN RECALL 20TA02, 12/20/2019 with MULTIPLE SAFETY ISSUES, and since car the was still under WARRANTY the RECALLS were fixed. The dealership never seemed to bothered notifying the NHTSA about the RECALLS. Even, Mr. [XXX] informed there were NO RECALLS. Since purchasing the vehicle with extended warranty, because the vehicle was sold as a CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED used car with the mileage of 76, 632. I owned this car for four years with numerous BREAKDOWNS starting from August 21, 2024. If the vehicle would have a COMPREHENSIVE TUNE, I wouldn't be filing out this form today. I have paid over $24,000 to own and fix breakdowns on this vehicle. [XXX] American Toyota should be held accountable. Ever since, I purchase my certified 2019 Toyota Avalon in around June 2022, my car has left me stranded on highways, city areas, and broke down coming out of my garage. I even purchase extended warranty, because of the high mileage it had 77,000 miles. On [XXX] car broke down Drive Belt had to be replaced, [XXX] [XXX] warning lights, dealership service technician couldn't figured out why engine was slowing down the vehicle, engine repair evac leak for gas cap, [XXX], while driving my car the vehicle, my car immediately stopped, it was towed to dealership of Larry H Miller on Alameda in Albuquerque NM, caused of my car stopping on the road in Albuquerque, the technician stated that he found DTCS for Missfire, switched coil to different cylinder and codes went away/on [XXX], my car was towed, because engine stopped while driving, the dealership saw that it was an electrical problem, bad battery on [XXX] car dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree, showing electrical malfunctioning of secondary braking system, the car must be towed to the dealership. I was lucky to get the car into a parking area of gas station. I am [XXX], I need to get home and take my [XXX]. So, while in Albuquerque New Mexico, I called for a tow truck to pickup my vehicle because I have triple AAA membership. Since, I have another car, and I needed to get that day June 30, 2026. I had to wait until today July 9, 2026 to have triple AAA to pick up my car and take it to the dealership Larry H Miller Toyota on Alameda, Albuquerque, New Mexico. I am experiencing the same malfunction with my backup camera/parking assist software that a million other VINs were recalled for. I called Toyota and was essentially told that not enough people from my cars' "batch" have complained. The malfunction is inconsistent, sometimes the camera works fine, sometimes the screen is totally black, and sometimes it freezes or goes black in the middle of backing up. This is incredibly hazordous.

After starting to accelerate from a stop light ,the Dashboard had a warning message that the accelerator and brake pedals were pressed simultaneously. The acceleration stopped and the car slowed automatically. After a few seconds the warning indicator went away and the car could accelerate. The cars behind my auto had to stop suddenly. At the time. I though that I might have hit both petals at the same time. When it happened again I opened an incident report with Toyota. Incident opened on 07-19-25 Case # 250719000440. The Toyota rep told me it should be take to a Toyota dealer to diagmose any error codes. The next time the same problem occured I took it to my Toyota dealer and was told there were no error codes to indicate a problem. I have also taken the car to a local repair shop after the problem happened and was shown there were no stored errror codes. The dealer wants to have my auto for an extende time to reproduce the problem. If they need error codes to solve the issue but no error codes are recorded when the problem occurs what can they determine? I am hoping that there are other Toyota Avalon owners which might have had the same issue.

A year ago my 2019 Toyota Avalon started displaying a message that the RCD (rear camera detection) was unavailable. I tried working with the dealership that sold me the car, but they ignored me. I went to another Toyota dealership and they said it would cost approximately $2000, but could not guarantee it would fix the issue. I’ve seen online that 1000’s of Toyota owners with the same system have had similar problems, and Toyota frequently responds with, “It’s a rolling computer, and very advanced.” Some were fixed by recalibration, but many have a more serious problem. All the stories are only the people that have posted about it. It’s probably Toyota’s biggest problem. My car was under warranty when it began, but health issues and restrictions kept me from getting the attention of the general manager since I was ignored by others. I feel this is serious enough and has effected numerous people that it warrants an investigation. People are relying on a system that doesn’t work properly, and some have been hurt and many others will be negatively affected by it.

After starting car, from being parked in parking garage from 8am-5pm, the Pre Collision warning system light turned on. Vehicle currently has 20k miles on the odometer. There are numerous records in the car's onboard history of this device failing during car startup. Drove home, started next day with no incident. System is unreliable. According to the Infotainment system, the car seems to report the failure every few months.

This incident has happened twice in three years. Hence it is a very rare occurrence. Both times involved the same events. Cruise control was on. I was traveling in the left lane of the interstate highway, approaching an 18-wheel truck which was in the right lane. When I was approximately 50 feet from the rear of the truck, the truck began to enter my lane. I suspect I was in the trucker's blind spot. My car did not sense the truck. The cruise control did not disengage. The brakes did not engage. But the MOST troublesome was that the car did not respond to my pressing on the brake pedal. I had to press 4 or 5 times before the cruise control would disengage and the brakes engage. Since I was traveling approximately 70 mph, the distance between my car and the truck (each time) closed rapidly. In the first instance, the truck tire hit my right front fender. I moved to the shoulder of the road and eventually the car braked. In the second case, I avoided collision by about 10 feet. I use the cruise control frequently and in EVERY other circumstance, the sensors on my car have worked correctly and disengaged the cruise control and I have never had a problem with breaking. I suspect a blind spot in the sensor system but why, only in this situation, does the brake system fail to disengage the cruise control when i press on the brake is a very troublesome mystery to me. Answering question on web page: My safety - life threatening, No dealer consultation, Regular maintenance schedule maintained, No warnings.

WHEN STARTING THE CAR AND PROCEEDING TO ACCELERATE THE CAR STALLS. THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL INCIDENTS WHERE THE CAR HAS DONE THIS (EACH TIME BEING TAKEN TO SERVICE AT TOYOTA). ONE IN PARTICULAR ALMOST BEING HIT BY A TRUCK WHEN GOING FROM A RED LIGHT TO GREEN LIGHT.ANOTHER ONE TURNING OUT OF A PARKING LOT AND HAVING TO MAKE SURE THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO CARS COMING MY DIRECTION IN FEAR OF BEING HIT WHILE TURNING AND CAR STALLING. THESE ISSUES HAVE BEEN TOO MANY SINCE I HAVE PURCHASED THE CAR. THIS MATTER HAS BEEN TAKEN UP TO CUSTOMER RELATIONS AND REVIEWING HOW MANY TIMES I HAVE TAKEN THIS VEHICLE IN THEY CONTINUE TO TELL ME THAT THEY HAVE NOT FAILED TO REPAIR MY CAR. I HAVE CONTINUED TO TAKE THE CAR TO BE SERVICED AND DIAGNOSTIC COMES UP WITH NO PROBLEMS IN THE COMPUTER SYSTEM. *I ALSO HAVE VIDEOS AND ALL OF MY SERVICE INVOICES REGARDING THE STALLING ISSUE THAT HAS YET TO BE CORRECTED.*

AT 3600 MILES, WHILE DRIVING ON A CITY STREET, CAN CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON PLUS ALL THE OTHER WARNING LIGHTS AND MALFUNCTION MESSAGES ABOUT EVERY SENSOR IN THE CAR, CAR LOST POWER AND ACCELERATION, ENGINE STARTS SOMETIMES ONLY. DEALER DIAGNOSIS WAS A FULL TANK OF E85 GAS, GAS STATION DOES NOT SELL THAT AND NO ANY OTHER COMPLAINT OF E85. DID MY OWN TESTING, DOESN'T SEEM LIKE ANY ETHANOL IN GAS. I SAVED ALL THE GAS FOR FURTHER TESTING. I COMPLAINED TO TOYOTA CORP BUT THEY STOOD BY AND SUPPORTED THE DEALER DIAGNOSIS. GAS STATION INSURANCE CARRIER DENIED THE CLAIM. EVEN IF IT WAS E85 GAS, THIS SHOULDN'T HAVE ALL THIS IMPACT ON THIS AVALON AND ITS COMPUTER SYSTEM.
