What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2008 Toyota Camry, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
The dashboard in my 2008 Toyota Camry LE has deteriorated over time and has melted, becoming sticky and glossy. This condition causes sunlight to reflect off the dashboard onto the windshield, creating a strong glare. This glare significantly impairs my visibility while driving, especially in bright daylight conditions. At times, I am unable to clearly see traffic, road conditions, or other vehicles. This creates a dangerous situation and increases the risk of a crash. The issue has progressively worsened over time. There were no warning messages or indicators prior to this condition developing. The problem appears to be caused by the dashboard material degrading under normal use and heat exposure. I reported this issue to Toyota dealers, including Fremont Toyota and Milpitas Toyota, but no corrective action was taken. The condition remains unresolved. The defective dashboard is available for inspection upon request. This issue represents a safety hazard due to reduced driver visibility.
Issue Description: Melting Dashboard Creating Driving Hazard I am reporting a serious safety hazard involving my 2008 Toyota Camry, which has developed a melting/sticky dashboard condition that significantly affects driver visibility and safety during daylight driving. Nature of the Problem: •The dashboard has become soft, shiny, and sticky to the touch, especially in warmer temperatures. •The melting material creates a high-gloss surface, which leads to excessive glare on the windshield. •This reflection severely impairs forward visibility, especially under sunlight or direct light conditions, such as during midday driving or on sunny days. •The dashboard’s condition is progressively worsening, becoming a constant distraction and hazard when driving. •The condition also poses potential chemical exposure risks, as the degraded dashboard material emits a strong odor and residue. Safety Concerns: •Visual impairment due to reflection: The dashboard acts like a mirror, reflecting sunlight directly into the driver’s line of sight. •Increased accident risk: The glare limits the driver’s ability to clearly see pedestrians, other vehicles, traffic signals, and road signs. •Heat-related degradation: The softening dashboard may also interfere with airbag deployment zones or deteriorate structural safety components over time. Request for Action: I respectfully request the following: 1.That this issue be formally investigated as a safety defect by the relevant vehicle safety authority. 2.That Toyota issue a recall or safety repair program for affected vehicles, if not already done. 3.That an evaluation be conducted to determine if the airbag function is compromised by the dashboard’s current state. Previous Attempts to Resolve: I have attempted to contact Toyota Customer Service and/or local dealerships, but have not received a resolution to date. The problem persists and continues to pose a daily driving hazard.

I purchased a used 2008 Camry but I didn’t know about the sticky dashboard defect. It’s a hazard to drive this car because of the extreme sun glare, which impedes my vision.

ABS light on, Brake warning light on, difficult to brake, Air Conditioner malfunctioning and seems connected to this issue.
am writing to report a critical safety issue with my 2008 Toyota Camry Hybrid's ABS module. The problems I've encountered include failing ABS modules, weak braking, VSC light illumination, a ringing sound, and occasional brake failure, requiring excessive force to regain control. This ABS module problem is alarmingly common in Toyota Camry Hybrids from 2007 to 2011. Repair costs are exorbitant, and the widespread nature of this issue poses a significant safety risk to drivers and passengers. I urgently request the NHTSA's immediate investigation and collaboration with Toyota to address this matter and ensure the safety of affected vehicles.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, the Power Steering, Service Vehicle, Traction Control, and ABS warning lights illuminated, and the speedometer failed to display the speed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the sensors for the front wheels had failed. The contact purchased and replaced the sensors; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 147,000.

I was driving behind a box truck and they made a abrupt stop so I had to as well and I rear ended the truck my brake peddle went all the way to the floor none of my airbags went off not one
Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
No complete failure has happened as I chose to not drive the vehicle as I feel it is unsafe. The rear trailing arm body mounts rust to a point that I feel the structural integrity is compromised. At first glance the mount appears intact but after tapping lightly with a small hammer pieces of the mount fall off leaving a large portion of the mount missing. I have attached pictures of the mount before checking the mount and after to show how much of the mount is left. If this mount were to fail it could cause loss of control of the vehicle and a crash.
THE DOORS ARE POWERED
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.

LOST POWER STEERING WHILE PARKING THE CAR, PS LIGHT ALSO BECAME ON. THE CAR BECAME DIFFICULT TO STEER, BUT WAS ABLE TO COMPLETE PARKING JOB AS THE CAR WAS ALMOST IN PARKING POSITION. CALLED AAA AND TOWED THE CAR HOME (2PM, NO DEALER WAS OPEN) AND LATER DROVE TO A NEARBY DEALER (THE AAA DRIVER TOLD ME HOW TO HANDLE THE STEERING). THE INITIAL DIAGNOSTIC BY THE DEALER (STEVENS CREEK TOYOTA, SAN JOSE, CA) IS AN ECU FAILURE. DEALER TOLD ME THAT WE WERE LUCK AS IT IS VERY HARD TO CONTROL THE CAR WITH THIS PROBLEM. I WAS LUCKY THAT IT HAPPENED WHILE WE WERE PARKING THE CAR. IF IT HAPPENED ON HIGHWAY, IT CAN POTENTIALLY CAUSE CRASH FOR SURE. CAR IS 2008 CAMRY HYBRID, 105K MILE. WELL MAINTAINED, ALL MAINTENANCE WORK WERE DONE BY TOYOTA DEALER. WHAT MADE ME EXTREMELY CONCERNED IS THAT THIS CAR HAS A HISTORY OF CRITICAL SAFETY FUNCTION FAILURE IN THE PAST. 1) DRIVER SIDE WINDER SWITCH WAS OVERHEATED AND GENERATED A LOT OF SMOKES. DEALER SAID THE SWITCH HAS A DEFECT, AND I BELIEVE IT LED TO A RECALL LATER. 2) DRIVER SIDE WINDOW WIPER STOPPED MOVING WHILE DRIVING IN RAIN, LOST VISIBILITY IN SECONDS. DEALER SAID A DEFECT IN THE MOTOR CAUSE THE PROBLEM, BUT NOT SURE WHETHER IT LED TO A RECALL. 3) PS / ECU PROBLEM THAT MADE THE CAR HARD TO CONTROL. I THINK TOYOTA IS DOING EXTREMELY POOR ON THEIR CAR'S SAFETY. THE DEALER REPORT IS NOT DONE YET. I WILL UPDATE IT LATER THANKS [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

BOUGHT A USED TOYOTA FROM APPLE NISSAN, EVRYTIME I GET ON THE HIGHWAY THERES VIBRATION IN TIRES WHILE DRIVING AT 55 MPH GENERAL TIRES 215/60R/1695V. (GT TIRE ALTIMAX)
I WAS DRIVING HOME ON ROUTE 287 NEAR THE ROUTE 23 SOUTH EXIT. I BEGAN TO CHANGE LANES TO USE THE EXIT. AS I STARTED TO MOVE INTO THAT LANE, THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME HIT A PIECE OF BLOWN TIRE FROM A TRUCK. I DID NOT SEE THIS AND I HIT IT. THE TIRE RIPPED OFF THE RIGHT REAR OF MY BACK BUMPER PANEL. LUCKILY THE PERSON INBACK OF ME MISSED THE TIRE. IT WAS NOT UNTIL I GOT HOME THAT I FOUND THE DAMAGE TO THE CAR. I WAS LUCKY THAT I DID NOT HAVE AN ACCIDENT OR LOSE CONTRROL OF MY CAR. I AM VERY ANGRY BECAUE IF I REPORT THIS TO MY INSURANCE, IT WILL INCREASE MY RATES AND I WILL GET A SURCHARGE. T I AM RESPECTFULLY ASKING THE DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAY SAFETY TO AID IN THE REPAIRS TO MY CAR. IT IS THE DEPT RESPONSIBILITY TO CLEAR THE AREAS ON A REGULAR BASIS. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS AREA OF INCREASED TRUCKING AND SHOULD BE TOP PRIORITY. *TR

From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Camry. The contact received a warranty-enhanced program related to the dashboard. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the repair was performed, but the vehicle experienced the failure approximately two years later. The contact stated that while driving on several occasions, a sticky film on the dashboard created a glare, obstructing the driver's vision of the driver. On one occasion, while attempting to lower the sun visor, the contact’s left arm got stuck on the dashboard, and force was needed to remove the arm from the dashboard. The contact’s arm was burning after being removed from the dashboard, and there were marks on the left arm. The contact used burn ointment on the arm, but no medical attention was needed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Camry. The contact stated while driving on various occasions during the daytime, the melted, sticky dashboard reflected light into her eyes. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the dashboard needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

CAR LURCHES FORWARD AFTER TOUCHING AN ICE PATCH AND SCARILY WANTS TO SPEED AHEAD. EVEN IN MY DRIVEWAY, IT SUDDENLY BEGINS TO SPEED FORWARD OR BACKWARD WHEN IT MERELY TOUCHES A SHEET OF ICE. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS IN AREAS WHERE THERE ARE PEDESTRIANS BECAUSE THE CAR SUDDENLY SEEMS OUT OF CONTROL. MY SOLUTION IS TO GO AS SLOWLY AS POSSIBLE UNTIL I AM ABLE TO BRING THE CAR TO A DEALER ON A NONICY DAY.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.

"TOYOTA PISTON RING RECALL"I HAVE NOT RECIEVE A NOTICE THAT A RECALL FOR 2008 CAMRY, WHICH I PURCHASED IN JUNE OF 2017. I HAVE DRIVEN IT ONLY 6,000 MILES AND HAVE CHANGED THE OIL TWICE. BOTH TIMES, I REALIZED THAT THE AMOUNT OF OIL IN THE CAR WAS ABNORMALLY LOW. I RECENTLY GOT AN OIL CHANGE AT VALVOLINE STORE, ABOUT 1200 MILES AGO, ON MARCH 15, 2018. IT IS ALREADY DANGEROUSLY LOW, AFTER DRIVING IN A NORMAL FASHION, 10 DAYS LATER. I AM NOW AWARE THAT A RECALL HAS OCCURRED FOR MILLIONS OF TOYOTAS HAVING THE IMPROPER PISTON RINGS INSTALLED. SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR DURING THIS RECALL PERIOD, I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THE ISSUE RESOLVED BY TOYOTA BEARING ALL OF THE COSTS TO REPAIR IT. THIS ONGOING PROBLEM WILL PROVE TO BE FATAL TO THE ENGINE IN MY CAT AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE A SAFETY CONCERN, SHOULD THE ENGINE SEIZE, OR OTHERWISE MALFUNCTION, WHILE I AM DRIVING IT. I HAVE VISITED AND ADDRESSED MY ISSUE WITH MY LOCAL, COPELAND TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. THEY DENY ANY RESPONSIBILITY TO REPAIR IT. I HAVE SPOKEN WITH 2 REPRESENTATIVES AT TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS WHOM ALSO DENY THAT TOYOTA HAS ANY RESPONSIBILITY. THERE ARE STILL MILLIONS OF CARS BY THUS MAKER, OUT ON THE ROAD, DRIVEN EVERYDAY WITH THIS SAFETY ISSUE. I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM ANOTHER AUTHORITY , WHAT I AM TO DO ABOUT GETTING TOYOTA TO FIX MY CAR.
IN MARCH OF 2015, WHILE LEAVING MY PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT PARKING LOT THE FLOOR MAT APPARENTLY INTERFERED WITH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL CAUSING THE CAR TO SPEED UP RESULTING IN LOSS OF CONTROL, HITTING A FIRE HYDRANT HEAD ON. THE CAR WAS TOTALED. AFTER THE CAR WAS TOTALED, I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE REGARDING THIS ISSUE SHORTLY AFTERWARDS. A LETTER FROM MY INSURANCE COMPANY INDICATED THAT I WAS NOT AT FAULT AT CAUSING THE ACCIDENT BUT RATHER THE ACCIDENT WAS THE RESULT OF ONE OR MORE RECALLS WITH REGARD TO BRAKING CONCERNS: IN THE LETTER MY INSURANCE COMPANY REFERENCED A RECALL NOTICE; NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 10V017000. I HAVE CONTACTED TOYOTA REGARDING THIS MATTER; HOWEVER M REQUESTS HAVE GONE UNANSWERED OR HAVE BEEN IGNORED. WHEN MY CAR WAS TOTALED MY INSURANCE PAID THE FAIR MARKET VALUE TO THE LENDER WHICH ENDED UP CREATING A DEFICIENCY. I'M STRUGGLING TRY TO PAY FOR ANOTHER VEHICLE AS WELL AS PAYING THE DEFICIENCY.

DURING AN ACCIDENT IN NOVEMBER OF 2015 I RECEIVED SUBSTANTIAL INJURIES AS A RESULT OF THE AIRBAG NOT INFLATING OR THE SEATBELT ENGAGING. I SPOKE WITH THE BODY SHOP AS TO WHY NEITHER SYSTEM WORKED AS DESIGNED, THEY COULD NOT ANSWER THIS QUESTION. THEY BELIEVED THAT THE SENSORS WERE COMPRESSED TO ENGAGE THE AIR BAGS BUT IT DID NOT ENGAGE. THEY ALSO NOTED THAT WHEN I HIT THE BRAKES THE SEATBELTS SHOULD HAVE LOCKED WHICH WOULD HAVE KEPT ME STATIONARY INSTEAD OF ALLOW ME TO HIT THE DRIVER DOOR JAM ABOVE THE STEERING WHEEL. BOTH VEHICLES WERE IN MOTION. THE VEHICLE THAT HIT ME MADE A LEFT TURN INTO MY FRONT LEFT QUARTER PANEL DAMAGING THE ENTIRE PANEL AND PART OF THE FRONT DRIVER DOOR.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY. UPON MAKING A TURN, THE SEAT BELT WARNING INDICATOR CHIMED SEVERAL TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO PROVIDE A REMEDY. THE OIL WAS ROUTINELY MAINTAINED, BUT THE PRESSURE CONTINUED TO BE LOW. THERE WAS NO WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED WHEN THE OIL PRESSURE WAS LOW. THE DEALER PROVIDED AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER FOR FURTHER DIAGNOSTIC TESTING FOR LONGER THAN THREE MONTHS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE SHOOK AND VIBRATED AND WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT THE BEARINGS WERE DEFECTIVE AND THE ENGINE MAY NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 59,000. ...UPDATED 12/14/16 *BF *TR
