2017 Toyota Corolla Engine Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the engine system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Engine reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components. Every record below is an owner-reported complaint about the 2017 Toyota Corolla submitted to NHTSA — not a confirmed defect, not a recall and not a manufacturer bulletin. 10 reports on file name it.

While driving in the middle of active traffic, the vehicle experienced a sudden and dangerous loss of motive power. The first indication of a problem was the A/C abruptly blowing hot air. Immediately following this, the vehicle began violently shaking before the engine stalled completely. The low oil pressure warning light was triggered on the dashboard. Losing all acceleration in the middle of active traffic created an immediate, severe crash hazard. The engine failure occurred after a franchised dealer service department failed. They had said at the dealership that my oil was fine. They didn’t even check it.

When the cruise control is set and I go down hill my car increases the speed by 8 mph faster than the set speed. My car also makes a loud grinding noise when it does this. I spoke with different Toyota auto employees and some say that the increase in speed and noise are normal and others say the opposite. I have been in many cars driving with cruise control on and never experienced this.

Fire reported

On the morning of July 21st the vehicle was parked in the garage the night before when all of the sudden our neighbors were yelling at my wife and I to exit the house because they saw fire flames and black smoke coming out of the garage. Everything in that garage and part of the house was destroyed. After it was safe to enter the house we noticed the damage was concentrated where the Toyota was parked, the explosion from the engine caused the hood to almost touch the windshield. Half the engine was gone.

The car was in a traffic jam, when the car automatically turned off and the control panel started to display the battery signal. This event occurred when the car was in the middle of a road. The car was pushed by other person to a safety area and then it was turned on. This situation never happened before. The vehicle battery is practically new and after the incident, the battery signal (lamp) has not been activated. The vehicle was evaluated by a Toyota authorized dealer, cleaning the combustion system, but there is uncertainty that this situation can occur again. A car that automatically turned off in the middle of the road is a safety issue for the driver and passengers, and also for other drivers.

While at idle the rpm will drop down to 400 rpm with it almost stalling out the car. This has been a continuing issue with no real answers on why.

WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT, THE CAR WILL JERK HARD LIKE SOMEONE IS PUSHING THE ACCELERATOR DOWN ALL THE WAY WHILE I HAVE THE BRAKES ENGAGED. THIS HAS HAPPENED ONLY 5 TIMES IN THE PAST 2 YEARS.... BUT IT IS ENOUGH TIMES THAT IS REALLY SCARES MYSELF AND MY KIDS. THE FILTERS (CABIN FILTER?) ALWAYS STINKS LIKE MOLD. MY SON HAS ACUTE ASTHMA AND I HAVE TO CHANGE IT OUT EVERY 2 OR 3 MONTHS TO KEEP HIM FROM HAVING AN ASTHMA ATTACK. THE BLUE TOOTH (HANDS FREE PHONE), THE CALLER ON THE OTHER END CAN NOT HEAR ANYTHING, BUT A WINDY NOISE LIKE I AM IN A WIND TUNNEL--- AND FORGET ABOUT EVEN TALKING ON IT ABOVE SPEEDS OF 40 MPH!! THE ROAD NOISE IS WORSE THAN MY 2002 SEBRING CONVERTIBLE THAT I USED TO HAVE. THE STEERING WHEEL WILL NOT LET ME SCROLL DOWN THE PHONE NUMBERS LIKE MY 2015 COROLLA USED TO LET ME DO. I WILL PROBABLY NEVER PAY FOR A 2017 CORROLLA CASH AGAIN. TOO MANY ISSUES.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
