2017 Toyota Corolla Steering Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the steering system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Steering reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

While reversing out of a parking spot, I noticed my break and steering wheel felt extremely stiff. I lost control of the vehicle for a second until I instinctively pushed HARD on the break. I realized it was unsafe to continue reversing, so I switched from R (reverse) to D (drive), I let go of the break pedal slowly, but the car continued to reverse. I pushed hard on the stiff break again, and switched from D (drive), to P (park), I let go of the break pedal again, and the car continued to roll back in reverse still. I realized my cars breaks, steering wheel, and gears were being unresponsive. I kept my foot on the break pedal, used the parking stick and set the car into P (parking) again, and turned it off. The car did not roll back as before, and was completely off. I turned the car back on again, and it went back to normal. The steering wheel and break pedal were not stiff, and the gears were all working and being responsive. I searched up the problem, and from what I have read, it is currently unsafe to drive my vehicle. I have kept up with proper and regular maintenance on my vehicle. But from what I have researched, the corolla has had a massive recall on this exact problem. However, my vin number indicates my vehicle is not eligible for a recall. I would like to receive proper help for this problem, as it is a dangerous and widely known problem with the 2013-2019 corollas.

Crash reported

While turning left out of a drive through my the steering locked up and shot to the left causing a run up on the curb. However after a second or two it cleared. Upon shutting the car off and restarting driving in a parking lot same problem occured steering wheel shot to left causing me to almost loose control then all electrical power was lost in the vehicle. The steering wheel fault came up on the dash and would not let me control the wheel.

STEERING WHEEL IS HARD TO TURN WHILE DRIVING.BECAUSE OF HARD STEERING WHEEL, IT IS HARD TO TURN. I FEEL RISKY WHILE TURNING BECAUSE THERE WOULD BE A CHANCES THAT IT WON'T TURN IN TIME AND WOULD HAVE THE RISK OF COLLISION.

LANE DEPARTURE ALERT & PRE COLLISION SYSTEM MALFUNCTION WARNING LIGHT KEEP ILLUMINATING ON THE DASHBOARD FOR A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF TIME AND THEN WILL TURN OFF AGAIN WITHOUT WARNING. THIS IS ALSO AFFECTING THE CRUISE CONTROL AND THE ABS SYSTEM. I NOTICED THAT IT AFFECTS WHAT SEEMS TO BE THE TRANSMISSION WHEN I AM COMING TO A STOP THE CAR WILL SHAKE UNCONTROLLABLY AND ACT LIKE IT IS OUT OF GEAR. ALMOST LIKE IT IS POSSESSED. IT'S BEEN DOING IT ON AND OFF SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR AND I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALERSHIP MULTIPLE TIMES AND THEY WILL FIX IT TEMPORARILY AND THEN SEVERAL MONTHS LATER IT ALWAYS COMES BACK. THIS PAST TIME HAS BEEN THE WORST AS IT SEEMS LIKE THERE ARE MULTIPLE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS THAT ARE BEING AFFECTED AND IT IS ACTUALLY AFFECTING THE STEERING AS WELL AS THE BREAKING AND EFFICIENT RUNNING OF THE VEHICLE .

WHEN PURCHASING THE CAR AND LEAVING THE CAR LOT I HEARD A GRINDING/RUBBING NOISE WHICH SOUNDS JUST LIKE BRAKE PADS BEING WORN AS WELL AS ROTORS. I CONTACTED THE CAR LOT AND THEY ASSURED ME IT WAS FROM RUST WHERE IT HAD SIT. THEY HAD ME TAKE IT TO TOYOTA OF KINGSPORT AND THEY EVALUATED STATING IT WAS RUST. I STILL HEAR THE RUBBING OR LOUDNESS AFTER THEY REPLACED THE ROTORS. PLEASE RECALL

WHILE DRIVING DOWN A DOWNGRADE WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ENGAGED AND SET TO 65MPH, THE CVT TRANSMISSION DOWNSHIFTS, THE RPMS INCREASED AND THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED TO WELL OVER THE SPEED LIMIT. IT FELT LIKE I WAS LOSING CONTROL. I HAD TO ACTIVATE THE BRAKES TO DISENGAGE THE CRUISE CONTROL IN ORDER TO REDUCE MY SPEED TO BELOW THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT. I TRIED IT AGAIN ON ANOTHER DOWNGRADE AND THE SAME SITUATION WAS DUPLICATED. THE CAR WILL ALSO ENGAGE RPMS WHEN YOU ARE DOWNGRADING OR UPGRADING IN CRUISE CONTROL I DID NOT TAKE THE CAR INTO A DEALER SINCE THE ISSUE HAS BEEN REPORTED TO DEALERSHIPS WITH A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM.

THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED, BUT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 155.
