2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Hybrid Brakes Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the brake system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Brakes reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

My 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser has exhibited persistent brake squealing since the day it was purchased. The noise occurs during normal braking conditions and has been present from the very first use of the vehicle. This is not a break-in issue, as it has never resolved on its own. Despite initially denying the issue, Toyota and the dealership have since acknowledged the problem and confirmed the existence of a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) addressing brake noise on this vehicle. However, despite multiple contacts with both the dealership and Toyota Motor North America directly, no corrective action has been taken, and the defect remains unresolved. This constitutes a known manufacturing defect acknowledged by Toyota themselves. The failure to remedy a documented TSB issue in a timely manner is unacceptable and may constitute a violation of warranty obligations.

Distance between the road and the underside of the wheel arches in the rear differs by 1.25 inches. Rear sagging to the left. Left rear spring weaker than right rear. Accentuated body lean when taking a right hand turn. Same load over each wheel causes more compression on the left spring versus the right spring. Toyota states the right to left is equal...this is not case.

At startup in garage in subfreezing condition. I put vehicle in reverse and brakes did not engage at normal pedal pressure. I had to push the brakes with extreme force to slow down the backwards movement. I did not think I would be able to stop the car. I had driven the vehicle the night before in wintery conditions and parked in my detached unheated garage. I feel like there may have been ice build up on the brake pads/rotors. Has not happened again but I have not had the exact same conditions. Will note the engine was revving at a little higher rpm because it was very cold out and was at start-up (normal behavior) but created a bit more force in reverse. There would have been a collision if something were behind me, it took that long to stop.

Brakes on a relatively brand new vehicle are squealing and creating a metal on metal sound. I am worried that the brakes on this vehicle are going to fail and cause a serious safety issue.

Brakes squeal in reverse. Loudly. Problem started after 3 months of ownership; purchased vehicle new. Toyota corporate and dealer notified. Dealer has had vehicle 3 times in the shop for the issue. Response was "No fix available." There is a TSB on this very issue for the Lexus GX550 (L-SB-0036-24). Wanted to put this issue on the NHTSA radar. This is a known issue on the [XXX]. Thank you for reading. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The vehicle has 3800 miles. The brakes squeal when backing. I took the vehicle to the dealership and they confirmed the problem and then “lubed” the brakes. The brake squeal has returned since this maintenance fix.

Loud squealing brakes when in reverse. Dealer confirmed the sound, performed an independent test drive to replicate the sound, but returned the vehicle with no solution. A few days into driving the vehicle and the sound is louder, but the dealership claims Toyota doesn't have a service bulletin despite widespread reports of the problem.

2024 Land Cruiser, purchased in July, 2024 has had 4 random hard downshifts when coming to a stop and then lunges forward as when a driver downshifts harshly in a manual car (keeping in mind that the land cruiser is an automatic and the driver is not intentionally down shifting). On the 4th occurance, I nearly rear ended a car. Fist occurance at approximately 250 miles and last occurance at approximately 1,200 miles. The car was taken to a local dealership on 11/04/24 but the dealership refused to further evaluate as Toyota headquarters informed them that the vehicle is sheduled to be evaluted by a Toyota regional technician. On 11/12/24, the toyota regional technician did not replicate the safety concern per the dealership and it was advised to go pick up the car. As of 11/18, the car remains in the local dealership due to my safety concerns. Toyota headquarters has not advised me or dealership on the next steps. No warning lights on the dash are present and Toyota does not consider this a safety issue as it has not been replicated. Concern of the car automatically braking without objects in front has been brought up to Toyota as well.

The automatic emergency braking is activated when no objects are in front of the car potentially resulting in being rear ended. The feature is so oversensitive that it is safer to deactivate it. Car taken to a local dealership and the concern was replicated with a dealership technician. The dealership refused to evaluate the safety concern any further as the car is being inspected by a Toyota regional technician. Additionally, the brakes squeak when in reverse but the concern has not been addressed by multiple dealerships or Toyota headquarters.

When backing up, the brakes squeal, sometimes a little bit, sometimes extremely loudly. Initially only happened off of a cold start at the beginning of the day, but now happens about half the time when backing up. This started occurring within a couple of weeks of purchasing the brand new vehicle. It has been to the dealership twice and they have made no repairs because they reportedly cannot replicate the issue.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
