What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2011 Toyota Tacoma, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that while performing a routine engine oil change, extensive corrosion was observed across the entire undercarriage. The severe rust damage fully compromised the vehicle's structural frame, control arms, and several underbody components. The dealer was not notified of the failure, but the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 200,000.
2011 Tacoma, 4x4. Leaf spring is broken on the passenger side. 130,000 miles. According to Toyota my vin is not included under recall 14V-604. I do believe this is either an error or deliberate oversight to avoid responsibility. Manufacturer date 05/11 so according to the recall notice it falls within the date range but not the effected Vins.
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
1.) Headlights are yellowing. 2.) Hard to see at night. 3.) Everyone has the same problem. The government should mandate going back to glass headlights for safety reasons. Buffing them only lasts a short period of time and the elderly can't afford to buy new OEM headlights every 6 years as they are very, very expensive. This is a safety issue, as yellow lenses equal more nighttime accidents, fact. This should have been addressed years ago.
The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that the driver's and passenger's side headlights were inoperable. Upon inspection, the contact noticed that the headlight assemblies were extremely hot and had melted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the driver's and passenger's side headlight assemblies needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 210,000.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
Blower Fan had been cutting off. Only running intermittent on High. Took to Toyota dealer June 2025. Was told it was a Cabin Air Filter Clogged. Paid for replacement and clean out of system. Continued to not work. Called a mechanic and asked for a diagnostic. Was told it was a “known issue” with Toyota Tacomas. Had been a recall in later years. I ordered the blower motor resistor and wiring harness from Toyota parts department. It was on back order due to the issue being widespread. July 2025 parts came in. Returned truck to the shop. The techichian replaced the motor blower resistor and the new wiring harness. However, he cut the burnt wires off and spliced the new wires into old wires back to the motor. Aug 2025 motor has stopped working again. Back to the Toyota shop. The truck needs a new blower motor. The labor will be 1200. Plus the labor I’ve already paid for three other shop visits plus parts. The motor blower is on back order till mid September. The motor has been let unplugged due to “risk of fire”. But I’ve been given the vehicle again to drive. It has had a risk of fire since June. The wires have been overheating and smelling. This should have been a recall in 2011. Just as it was in the later Toyota Tacoma. Pleas investigate
This VIN number was totaled due to a bent frame after being rear ended on June 10th. I fear my insurance company (USAA) will attempt to commit fraud by not reporting the title as salvage.
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that while attempting to have an inspection completed on the vehicle, the contact was informed by the mechanic that the inspection could not be completed due to several holes in the underbody frame of the vehicle. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 168,000.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
Steering shaft u- joint seizure causing loss of vehicle steering. Very dangerous.
The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that after taking the vehicle for repair, the contact was made aware of rust on the steering shaft and the support arms and the front end of the vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and the contact was informed that there was no fix for the failure. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 144,000.
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that over time the horn intermittently became inoperable; however, the horn operated while in the middle of making a turn. The contact was concerned about the failure because the horn and the air bag in the steering wheel were connected by the clockspring. No warning lights were illuminated. The local dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired because the VIN was not associated with a recall related to the failure. The local dealer confirmed that the VIN was not included in a recall related to the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 88,000.
MY VEHICLE FAILED VA INSPECTION DUE TO THE HORN NOT WORKING. I HAVE TO GET THE SPIRAL CABLE REPLACED PER THE AUTO REPAIR SHOP. THIS WAS A RECALL ON TACOMA'S UP TO 2009 (RECALL B1801) BUT NOT MY YEAR. MY YEAR SHOULD BE PART OF THE RECALL. I BELIEVE THIS ALSO IMPACTS THE AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT FROM THE STEERING WHEEL.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
I purchased the truck December 6th 2025 within a thousand Miles within the end of the year I experienced brake failure on the highway I laid under the truck to patch the brake failure and found a cracked leaf spring suspension component which there's already a recall for that exact make and model just not my VIN number for that cracked leaf spring there was a recall for frame rust and just rust in general and my brake lines rusted out but a certified technician from the used car dealership said it was safe and road Worthy I experienced a brake fire on the front calipers shortly after this brake failure the fire caused 7800 worth of damage I got quoted from Toyota to fix it and that doesn't cover the $2,000 worth of leaf springs which there was already an exact recall for this exact model of truck for the exact damage depicted but somehow my VIN is not applicable for this repair.
THE VEHICLE TAKES LONG TO STOP EVEN AFTER CHANGING THE BRAKE PADS , ROTORS, BRAKE SHOES, WITH NEW COMPONENTS. THE REAR MAKES A THUD SOUND WHEN ACCELERATING OR COMING TO A STOP. THE LEAF SPRINGS ALSO SQUEAK AND I NOTICED AFTER THEY CHANGED MY FRAME THE LEAF SPRINGS WERE NOT CHANGE EVEN THOUGH THERE IS A RECALL ON THE LEAF SPRINGS AND IT WAS RUSTING? THE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT STARTED TO MAKE THIS LOUD THUD SOUND WHEN GOING OVER BUMPS AROUND 5-10 MPH. THERE IS ALSO A RECALL ON THIS, BUT MY LOCAL DEALER SAYS THERE ISN'T ONE? WHY DOESN'T THE MAIN BRANCH TALK TO OR UPDATE THE SYSTEM FOR ALL TOYOTA BRANCHES FOR RECALLS? *TR
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
I STARTED MY TACOMA IN PARK, WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE I PUT IT INTO REVERSE, THE ENGINE AND THEN STARTED TO ACCELERATE VERY FAST, SPINNING THE TIRES, IT WAS ON ASPHALT WITH SOME SAND. I PRESSED DOWN HARDER ON THE BRAKE TO KEEP IT IN PLACE AND SHIFTED BACK TO PARK, AT WHICH POINT THE ENGINE RPMS WENT BACK TO IDLE. WHEN I RETURNED TO REVERSE EVERYTHING WAS BEHAVING NORMALLY. THE TRUCK HAD BEEN IN MY HEATED GARAGE FOR A WEEK, I DROVE IT 3-4 MILES IN DRY SUNNY COLD WEATHER(32), SHUT IF OFF FOR A FEW MINUTES BEFORE THIS HAPPENED. IN THE FIVE YEARS I HAVE OWNED THE TRUCK THIS IS THE SECOND TIME SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENED. THE LAST TIME WAS A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO WHILE IN DIVE IT SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. BOTH CASES WERE QUITE ALARMING BUT FORTUNATELY DID NOT RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT. THE PRIOR INCIDENT WAS REPORTED TO TOYOTA AND NHTSA.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 TOYOTA TACOMA. WHILE DRIVING 2 MPH, THE CONTACT PULLED THE VEHICLE INTO A PARKING SPACE AND SUDDENLY ACCELERATED APPROXIMATELY 18 FEET BEFORE CRASHING INTO A TREE. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THERE WERE TWO INJURIES THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V014000 (AIR BAGS, SEATS). THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 63,000. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
Vehicle was brought to dealer to replace ROTTED transmission cooler lines. During inspection it was noticed that the vehicles rack & pinion steering tube is almost completely ROTTED through as well, this is a complicated and expensive repair, which if it completely fails will render the vehicle unsafe for the road, a danger to myself and others on the road. The vehicle has only 127,000 miles. I was also informed that the vehicle no longer qualifies for frame replacement under recall ' because I waited too long '
EXTREME WEAR AND STRUCTURAL DETERIORATION OF THE REAREND GEARS THAT CAUSES A CLUNKING AND WINDING SOUND. THE CLUNK SOUND OCCURS WHEN THE VEHICLE IT PUT INTO GEAR AND THE WINDING SOUND AS IT IS DRIVEN.

Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
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
2011 TOYOTA TACOMA EXPERIENCES SPARK KNOCK (DETONATION). SAME SYMTOMS AS IN T-SB-0044-14. ALSO, THE 2011 ENGINE IS THE SAME ENGINE THAT IS IN THE 2012 VEHICLE COVERED BY T-SB-0044-14. SO WHY IS THE 2011 MODEL NOT COVERED BY T-SB-0044-14? I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE THROUGH THE CERTIFIED USED VEHICLE PROGRAM AT THE LOCAL DEALER IN JANUARY 2014.

From owner reports, verbatim
The locking mechanism, the vechile was park we put the child in to turn it rear facing and it wouldn’t lock into place, so we turned it forward facing and it still wouldn’t lock into place. The child’s seat will not lock into position. Then we noticed where the lock off is the plastic is bent upward from the seat belt itself. The chest clip is also Magnetic and had to be replaced all ready by manufacturer due to it not latching. This will not let me upload the video
YES, I WENT TO THE DEALER WHO IS SELLING THIS VEHICLE AND NONE OF THE 9 RECALLS HAVE BEEN CORRECTED. DISTURBING! I CHECKED THE SAFETY SITE FOR THE INFORMATION

Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
The underside of my 2011 Toyota Tacoma is experiencing tremendous rust. Dealer said since there was not perforation, nothing to be done. Brackets holding wiring, body panels and now gas tank have rusted and failed. The gas tank strap is a major concern. It is available for inspection. The gas tank is held up now by one unrusted strap and rubber bungee cords I applied. Dealer or independence service center has not seen it. Nearest dealer is a ferry ride away, I live on an island. No inspection by manufacturer etc. No warning lights or messages.
SINCE PURCHASE VEHICLE HAS HAD INTERMITTENT VIBRATION AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS EVIDENCED BY SHAKING OF THE TRUCK BED, EMPTY PASSENGER SEAT AND STEERING WHEEL. ATTEMPTS TO RESOLVE BY: REBALANCING, ROTATING AND REPLACING TIRES, ALIGNING FRONT END, WHEEL TRUING, UNIVERSAL JOINT AND DRIVE SHAFT HANGER BRACKET REPLACEMENT, INSPECTION OF- ROD ENDS, UPPER AND LOWER CONTROL ARMS, STEERING BOX, UNSUCCESFULL. JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT THE ATTACHED TECH BULLETIN FROM TOYOTA. SHOULDN'T THIS BE A SAFETY RECALL DUE TO THE POTENTIAL FOR DRIVELINE FAILURE? TOYOTA TECH BULLETIN # T-SB-0008-14 IT WON'T UPLOAD DUE TO SIZE.

From owner reports, verbatim
2011 TOYOTA TACOMA. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION AND SECURITY SYSTEM IN VEHICLE. . *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED ONE DAY AS SHE WAS LEAVING WORK, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. IT SEEMED AS THOUGH THE VEHICLE DIDN'T RECOGNIZE THE KEY AND SHE WAS UNSUCCESSFUL AT JUMP STARTING IT. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER AND THE PROBLEM WAS DETERMINED TO BE WITH THE SECURITY SYSTEM, WHICH HAD BEEN INSTALLED AND HAD NOT BEEN REMOVED COMPLETELY. SHE ALSO STATED THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WAS NOT SHIFTING CORRECTLY, PARTICULARLY WHEN SHIFTING UP HILLS, IT REQUIRED HER TO FORCEFUL APPLY THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL TO GET THE VEHICLE TO GO APPROPRIATELY. AGAIN, SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, BUT THE COMPUTER STATED THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG. THE PROBLEM SEEMED TO BE GETTING WORSE, WHEN IN EARLY DECEMBER THE CONSUMER WAS IN ROUTE OVER A DOUBLE LANE ROAD OVER A MOUNTAIN, WHEN THE TRUCK SUDDENLY FELT AS THOUGH IT HAD SLIPPED OUT OF GEAR, THERE WAS NO POWER TO THE DRIVE TRAIN AND THERE WAS A GRINDING SENSATION FROM THE GAS PEDAL. THE CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK, THEN DRIVE AND PROCEEDED AGAIN. A SIMILAR EVENT OCCURRED AS SHE MADE HER WAY BACK OVER THE MOUNTAIN AT THE END OF THE DAY. HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE LOST POWER AGAIN AND IT DID NOT RESPOND TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, BUT IT ALSO MADE A VERY FAST CLICKING SOUND. THE CONSUMER WENT BACK TO THE DEALER, ONLY TO BE TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG. THE MECHANIC DECIDED TO TEST DRIVE THE VEHICLE AND NOTED THE VEHICLE SEEMED TO BE SLUGGISH IN THE AUTOMATIC DRIVE POSITION, BUT SEEMED TO FUNCTION MORE RESPONSIVELY IN THE 4TH POSITION.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 25 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE BEGAN SHAKING ABNORMALLY WHILE DOWNSHIFTING. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHERE THE DEALER TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE AND DETERMINED THAT THE SHAKING WAS NORMAL FOR THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT DID NOT AGREE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 1,500.

Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE LOCATION OF THE CENTER REAR VIEW MIRROR ON THE 2011 (AND MAYBE PREVIOUS MODELS) OF TOYOTA TACOMA COMES IN THE WAY OF THE FRONT VIEW. THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE WHEN YOU ARE ABOUT TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN, THE LOW HANGING REAR VIEW MIRROR COMPLETELY BLOCKS THE VIEW AND IT IS REALLY HARD TO SEE THE PEDESTRIANS CROSSING THE STREET, CAUSING A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD. THE LOW REAR VIEW MIRROR ALSO BECOMES PROBLEMATIC, IF THE ROAD GOES DOWN AND THEN UP ON A RIGHT TURN CURVE, AS IT BECOMES IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE THE ROAD AHEAD DUE TO THE LOCATION OF THE MIRROR. FOR ANYONE WHO IS TALLER THAN 5'10", THIS IS A MAJOR ISSUE, AS DISCUSSED ON SEVERAL ONLINE FORUMS. I AM HAVING TO CONSTANTLY DUCK UNDER THE MIRROR TO SEE THE ROAD, AND I FEEL THAT THIS IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIANS STATED THE TIRE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE TIRE WAS REPLACED WITH THE SPARE TIRE AND A REPLACEMENT TIRE WAS ORDERED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 34,000. UPDATED 07/27/11*LJ UPDATED 08/01/11
