2010 Toyota Tundra Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2010 Toyota Tundra, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Reports by component

Ranked by how many owner reports name each component category

Percentages are of component mentions. A single complaint can name more than one component, so these do not sum to the total complaint count.

My understanding is that my vehicle went in for the frame issue. However on both the driver and passenger sides the frame is literally disintegrating. The metal is falling apart in solid chunks, not flakes actual chunks ⅜" x 2" x 3"! This is taking place in the exact same locations on each side. Just aft of the front suspension cross frame and in front of the transmission/transfer case cross support.

Took my 2010 Tundra in for service at a local repair shop and was told that my frame has severe rust on the frame and is in poor condition. I am worried about the safety of this vehicle for me and my family. I am the only owner of the truck and purchased it brand new. What can be done? Thank you

I received a check engine light for the secondary injection system. Toyota extended the warranty but wont honor issues after 10 years, even though the truck has less than 100K miles. This is a safety issue as the trucks performance is altered and concerned about passing a car on a two lane highway. The repair can range from $2K to $4K pending on the dealer.

I HAVE ENCOUNTERED ON THREE DIFFERENT OCCASIONS THE SENSORED TIRE VALVES FAILING AND LEAKING. I REPORTED THE FIRST TO TOYOTA AND THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE FAULTY VALVE. APPROXIMATELY 2 MONTHS LATER I HAD A SECOND VALVE FAIL AND AGAIN HAD IT REPLACED AT A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. ON JUNE 25, 2012 I AGAIN HAD A VALVE FAILURE AND CONTACTED THE TOYOTA CUSTOMER CARE CENTER THINKING I HAD A DESIGN PROBLEM AS THREE OF THE FOUR VALVES FAILED WITHIN 6 MONTHS. I WAS TOLD THAT THEY WOULD REPLACE ANY VALVE DEEMED DEFECTIVE BUT NOT REPLACE ALL FOUR AS I REQUESTED. MY CONCERN IS THAT WITH THESE VALVES A FAILURE COULD OCCUR AT ANY TIME AND AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THIS COULD BE TRAGIC. I AM ASKING THAT THIS AGENCY LOOK INTO THE VALVE DESIGN AND FAILURE RATE TO DETERMINE IF THE PUBLIC SAFETY IS AT RISK. I HAVE REPLACED ALL THE VALVES WITH STANDARD RUBBER VALVES MAKING MY PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM INOPERABLE. TOYOTA WILL MAKE NO ATTEMPT TO RECTIFY THIS SITUATION TO MY SATISFACTION AND I AM TRULY CONCERNED THAT A POTENTIAL PROBLEM TRULY EXISTS. I AM SURE THAT MY PICKUP TRUCK IS NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS TYPE OF FAILURE RATE. *JS

AT 25000 MILES THE TIRES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED ON MY 2010 TOYOTA TUNRDA DUE TO POOR OUTSIDE WEAR. I ROTATE AND MONITOR MY TIRE PRESSRE REGULALY. THE DEALER CHECKED THE SUSPENSION AND SAID THERE WAS NOT ISSUE WITH IT, YET THEY REPLACED THE RACK STEERING AT 27000 MILES. I HAVE SINCE REPLACED THE TIRES AND HAD THE VEHICLE ALIGNED AND THEY ARE ALREARY WORN OUT AGAIN WITH 10000 MILES ON THEM. ANY NEWER TUNDRA I SEE ON THE ROAD SEEMS TO HAVE THE SAME ISSUE WITH VARIOUS TIRE BRANDS HIGH END OR NOT. IE MICHELIN, TOYO, BRIDGESTONE. *TT

AIR BAGS (MANUFACTURE UNKNOWN) ON SEPT 29, 2018 WHILE DRIVING ON A TWO LANE HIGHWAY AT 50 MPH, MY STEERING WHEEL AND KNEE BAGS INFLATED FOR NO REASON. I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND LOST SIGHT OF THE ROAD FOR SEVERAL SECONDS BECAUSE OF THE FOG ON THE WINDSHIELD. WHEN THE FOG CLEARED, I COULD SEE THAT I WAS GOING TO END UP IN A FIELD AND THAT I HAD CROSSED THE CENTER LINE. I TRIED TO BACK OUT OF THE FIELD BUT COULD NOT BECAUSE OF THE MUDDY CONDITIONS. I CALLED MY WIFE, TOLD HER THE AIR BAGS HAD INFLATED FOR NO REASON. I ASKED HER TO CALL AAA FOR A TOW TRUCK. WHILE SPEAKING TO HER, A MAN WALKED UP TO ASK IF I WAS OKAY. I SAID YES. HE THEN ASKED IF I REALIZED I HAD HIT AN ONCOMING VEHICLE. I WAS NOT. I HAD NOT SEEN ANY OTHER VEHICLE BECAUSE OF THE "FOG" FROM THE AIR BAG. I ASKED HIM WHAT VEHICLE AND HE POINTED TO A MAN IN A RED SHIRT STANDING IN FRONT OF A WHITE PICKUP WITH DUEL REAR WHEELS. I TOLD MY WIFE I NEEDED TO GO SEE IF ANYONE WAS INJURED, GOT OUT OF MY TRUCK AND WALKED BACK TO THE OTHER TRUCK. NO ONE WAS INJURED IN THE ACCIDENT. I WAS TOLD BY MY INSURANCE ADJUSTER THAT THERE WAS APPROXIMATELY $7,000 DAMAGE TO THE OTHER TRUCK. MY VEHICLE WAS TOTALED.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA TUNDRA WHICH WAS PURCHASED IN 2009. WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, AS LOW AS 10 MPH, THE VEHICLE WOULD ACT AS IF IT WERE IN NEUTRAL AND ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE. THE VEHICLE WOULD COME TO A COMPLETE STOP ON ITS ON AND THEN PROCEED TO MOVE FORWARD, THROWING HER VIOLENTLY BACK INTO HER SEAT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE FAILURES COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. THE DEALER INVESTIGATED FURTHER AND STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY A SOFTWARE MALFUNCTION AND THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO TO REPAIR THE FAILURE; THEREFORE, THEY WERE RELEASING THE VEHICLE TO HER. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE VEHICLE TO CORRECT THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE UNDER 5,800.
