FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS

The defect: ON CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES, THE FUEL CONNECTOR LINKING EACH OF THE FEED AND RETURN FUEL HOSES TO THE FUEL PUMP MOUNTING PLATE MAY FRACTURE FOLLOWING IN-SERVICE HANDLING.
The risk: FUEL COULD ESCAPE FROM THE FRACTURED BODY OF THE CONNECTOR ONTO THE ENGINE OR SIDE OF THE BIKE. FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, CAN RESULT IN A FIRE.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE CONNECTOR. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 30, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT TRIUMPH AT 1-678-854-2010.

The defect: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MOTORCYCLES. OIL CAN LEAK FROM BETWEEN THE CRANKCASE HALVES.
The risk: THIS CAN RESULT IN OIL SPILLAGE FORWARD OF THE REAR TIRE AND COULD, IN SOME CASES, CAUSE VEHICLE INSTABILITY.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE LOWER CRANKCASE BOLTS.

1999 TRIUMPH SPRINT ST MOTORCYCLE. PLASTIC FUEL LINE CONNECTOR BETWEEN FUEL PUMP AND TANK LEAKED SPRAYING SEVERAL QUARTS OF FUEL ON THE HOT ENGINE AND THE RIDER IN A MATTER OF MINUTES. THE FUEL LINE CONNECTOR THAT LEAKED WAS FEMALE HALF OF THE CONNECTOR THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY RECALLED BY THE MANUFACTURER. THE MALE PORTION OF THE CONNECTOR WAS REPLACED UNDER A PREVIOUS RECALL BUT NOT THE FEMALE HALF. THE LEAK OCCURS WHEN FIRST STARTING THE ENGINE (COLD ENGINE) BUT CAUGHT FIRE WHILE CONTINUING TO LEAK WHILE THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING. CURRENTLY TRYING TO FIND PARTS TO REPLACE THE CONNECTION. *TR

99 TRIUMPH SPRINT ST MOTORCYCLE 8500 MILES CAREFULLY MAINTAINED AND STORED IN HEATED GARAGE. WHILE RIDING AT 50 MPH REAR WHEEL SUDDENLY LOCKED. SKIDDED AND FISHTAILED AND FORTUNEATELY DIDN'T CRASH. THE REAR WHEEL NEEDLE ROLLER BEARING HAD FAILED. THERE WAS NO WARNING OR INDICATION OF ANY PROBLEM PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT. I FOUND A RECALL 02V242000 ON CERTAIN 2001 MODELS ON THE REAR WHEEL BEARING AND CONTACTED TRIUMPH USA. THEY SAID THERE HAD NEVER BEEN A REPORT OF AN ACTUAL INCIDENT WHERE THE REAR WHEEL HAD LOCKED AND THAT SINCE THE RECALL WAS NOT FOR MY MODEL YEAR, WOULD NOT COVER THE REPAIR. THEY SINCE HAVE AGREED TO PAY FOR THE PART BUT NOT LABOR. MY CONCERN IS MORE FOR THE POTENTIAL FOR THIS TO HAPPEN TO SOMEONE ELSE WITH POSSIBLY SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT IT HASN'T HAPPENED BEFORE.*AK
