What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2019 Volkswagen GTI, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
Rough idle on start. RPM is not maintaining to keep the engine running. After a few try, it starts ok and drive off the parking lot, but the engine dies after about 10 seconds over 30mph. It feels like gasoline is not igniting corretly. Scanned Error Code P0171: System Too Lean Bank 1 P0190: Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor A Circuit Dealership can't replicate the issue and find the issue. Could be related to Fuel System Recall.
AS I SLOWED DOWN COMING TO A STOP SIGN, I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL. WHEN I CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP, THE ENGINE SHUT OFF AS IF IT WAS AN AUTO OFF/AUTO ON FEATURE. THE ENGINE DID NOT TURN BACK ON AUTOMATICALLY. THIS HAPPENED IMMEDIATELY AFTER AT THE NEXT STOP LIGHT. A FEW DAYS LATER, THE SAME THING HAPPENED.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
VEHICLE STALLS AT LOW SPEEDS. I HAVE NOTICED MY CAR STALL WHEN LEAVING A PARKING SPOT WHERE I WILL GET HALFWAY OUT OF THE PARK, AND THEN THE RPM GOES TO 0 AND I HAVE TO PUT IT INTO PARK, TURN THE KEY, AND AFTER A LONGER THAN NORMAL STARTUP TIME, IT GOES.
CAR STALLS AT LOW SPEEDS, PARTICULARLY COMING TO A STOP. HAPPENS WITH CLUTCH IN OR IN NEUTRAL. HAS BEEN HAPPENING SINCE DAY 1 OF OWNERSHIP OF BRAND NEW VEHICLE WITH 80 MILES ON ODOMETER. CONTINUES AT 10 MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP WITH 6K MILES ON ODO. THE PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT. IT DID NOT OCCUR FOR 6 MONTHS BETWEEN DECEMBER 2019 AND JUNE 2ND 2020. ON JUNE 3RD VW INSTALLED 24FD UPDATE. UPON DRIVING THE CAR HOME FROM THE DEALERSHIP, THE CAR STALLED 3 TIMES. TWICE AT STOPLIGHTS IN 1ST GEAR WITH CLUTCH IN. ONCE IN NEUTRAL AFTER I PULLED INTO MY DRIVEWAY. *TR
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
I own a vehicle built from two salvage vehicles: a 2019 VW Golf Sportwagen (VIN [XXX] - the body) and a 2019 VW GTI (VIN [XXX] - the engine, suspension, fuel tank/system, etc). The vehicle is registered and titled under the Sportwagen VIN. Safety Recall 20UF requires replacement of the suction jet pump to prevent risk of fire. The recall was performed on the Sportwagen prior to its crash, but not on the GTI. Since the Sportwagen no longer has it's original engine/fuel tank, but that from the GTI, this means my vehicle has the defective, unsafe part. Because the dealer service department goes by the registered body VIN, they refused to perform the recall. I called VWoA Customer Care, who advised me that they could not do anything, and that the dealer service department must request an exception from VWoA and inspect the vehicle. I have attempted reaching out to my two nearest VW dealers, including my regular dealer, and they have either refused to perform the recall, or refused to get back to me. One dealer even said I should perform the repair myself, and when I pressed for VW to perform the recall, he said he'd have to call his regional manager and call me back at the end of the week. Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE VEHICLE SEEMS TO PERIODICALLY STALL WHEN I'M TRAVELING AT LOW SPEEDS, SUCH AS IN PARKING LOTS, OR SLOWING DOWN TO TAKE A RIGHT OR LEFT TURN. IT HAS RECURRED ENOUGH (~4 TIMES IN 220 MILES) TO KNOW IT IS NOT DRIVER ERROR.
I WAS FULLY STOPPED AT A MAJOR INTERSECTION DURING RUSH HOUR IN LOS ANGELES (SANTA MONICA BLVD AND SEPULVEDA). THE AUTO STOP/START FEATURED WAS ON, SO MY ENGINE HAD FLIPPED OFF. WHEN I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE THE ENGINE IS SUPPOSED TO RE-ENGAGE, BUT INSTEAD MY CAR STALLED (RESULTING IN THE VERY UPSET BMW DRIVER BEHIND ME NEARLY PLOWING INTO MY CAR) AND WON'T MOVE. THE EPK LIGHT AND SOME WARNING POPPED UP ON THE SCREEN, BUT I WAS TOO DISTRACTED BY NOT GETTING KILLED THAT I DIDN'T CATCH WHAT IT SAID. I HAD TO TURN MY CAR FULLY OFF AND THEN BACK ON AGAIN TO GET MY ENGINE TO RESTART. I THEN TOOK MY CAR TO THE VW DEALER IN SANTA MONICA. THEY TOOK NEARLY TWO WEEKS AND 150 MILES OF TEST DRIVES TO TRY TO REPLICATE THE ISSUE BUT COULDN'T SO THEY REPLACED THE STARTER. MY EPK LIGHT STILL REGULARLY COMES ON WHEN I START MY CAR, AND I THEN HAVE TO TURN IT OFF AND BACK ON AGAIN TO GET MY CAR TO START, AND OFF HESITATES FLIPPING OVER IN THE AUTO STOP/START STATES. PLEASE NOTE I AM THE FIRST OWNER OF MY CAR, AND I HAD ONLY HAD MY CAR FOR ABOUT 6 WEEKS AT THE TIME OF THIS INCIDENT.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
The front collision brake assist goes on when there is no obstacle. It has given me obstacle warnings before, but this time it slammed on the brakes and brought me to a stop. This "safety" feature is going to get me rear ended. I have not taken it to a dealer because internet search shows me it is a widespread problem for which there is no fix. I would like it permanently disabled.
16000 MILES. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON AND OFF. PURGE VALE REPLACED, TWO WEEKS LATER LEAK DETECTION PUMP FAILED AND NEEDS REPLACEMENT. VOLKSWAGEN CLAIMS LEAK DETECTION PUMP IS ON NATIONAL BACK-ORDER WITH UNKNOWN TIME OF ARRIVAL.

Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
While simply driving 75mph (speed limit during time of incident) on the highway, i heard a loud explosion sound and the sunroof had completely shattered and was blown upwards. Glass began and continued to fly off, creating a large hole, while trying to get to a stopping point. The was only very little shards of debris that had gotten inside the vehicle while driving, but had potential to put me and a passenger at risk of serious injury. No vehicles were close to mine that could have caused debris to hit the area and no other vehicles were affected. There was no cracks or chips in the glass prior to the incident. There is reason to believe that it is a manufacturing error or installation error prior to purchasing the vehicle in 2020. Supporting that, i have researched reports of other Volkswagen Golf GTI models dealing with the same or similar issues with the sunroof exploding upwards with zero cause or explanation. There has not been an inspection or investigation of the damage as is happened around 3:00pm on this date ( January 30th, 2026).
I HAD TAKING MY 2019 VOLKSWAGEN GTI TO THE DEALER ABOUT NOW 4 TIMES REGARDING HAVING PROBLEMS WITH MY TWO FRONT DOORS THEY MAKE A SQUEAK NOISE AND DOORS RATTLING WHEN ENTERING EXITING DRIVEWAYS AND WELL DRIVING ON FREEWAYS AND STREETS THE DEALERS SOLUTION WAS TO ADD A LUBRICANT AROUND MY DOORS AND THAT DIDN'T WORK. SECOND SOLUTION THEY DID WAS TO ADD A VINYL AROUND THE DOORS AND THAT DO NOT WORK. CAR IS STILL HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. DEALERSHIP SAID THAT THEY NEED TO WAIT FOR A VOLKSWAGEN SPECIALIST TO SEE WHAT ELSE THEY CAN DO TO MINIMIZE THE PROBLEM. SO NOW I'M WAITING FOR THAT PERSON TO BE AVAILABLE AND SEE WHAT ELSE THEY COULD DO TO THE CAR. I ASKED VOLKSWAGEN TO BUY THE CAR BACK BECAUSE OF THE PROBLEM AND THEY SAID NO YEAH THEY'RE GOING BY THE MANUFACTURING WARRANTY.

Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
2019 MANUAL TRANSMISSION GTI STALLING WHEN COMING TO A STOP WITH FOOT ON CLUTCH. STARTED HAPPENING TWO DAYS AFTER PURCHASE ON 6/02/2019, AFTER APPROXIMATELY 600 MILES ON VEHICLE I DID NOT EXPERIENCE STALLING. VEHICLE NOW HAS APPROXIMATELY 2100 MILES, AND I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE STALLING MULTIPLE TIMES OVER THE PAST TWO DAYS. IT HAPPENS MORE OFTEN AFTER DRIVING THE CAR SPIRITEDLY, AND I CAN CONSISTENTLY GET THE CAR TO HAVE THE ISSUE WHEN DRIVING SPIRITEDLY. HAPPENS AT RANDOM DURING NORMAL DRIVING. VEHICLE ALSO LOSES ELECTRONICALLY ASSISTED POWER STEERING DURING FAULT.
CAR IS AT 3500 MILES, BOUGHT NEW FROM DEALER. CAR IS MANUAL TRANSMISSION. CAR HAS BEEN FINE UNTIL 5/11/19. WHILE STUCK IN HIGHWAY TRAFFIC, THE CAR STALLED WITH THE CLUTCH DEPRESSED. 10 MINUTES AFTER THE INCIDENT, THIS TIME OFF THE HIGHWAY, THE CAR STALLED WITH THE CLUTCH DEPRESSED AGAIN WHEN I WAS STOPPING AT A STOP SIGN. IN CASE #1) I WAS IN 1ST GEAR. THE STALL WAS VERY SMOOTH AND NOT NOTICED BY PASSENGERS (I NOTICED IT DUE TO TACHOMETER FALLING TO 0). THE CLUTCH WAS %100 DEPRESSED #2) I WAS IN 3RD OR 4TH GEARS. I WAS SLOWING DOWN FOR A STOP SIGN. WHEN I CAME TO A STOP, THE CAR STALLED. I WAS ALERT DUE TO THE FIRST INCIDENT AND MADE SURE TO TAKE NOTE OF WHAT HAPPENED. THE CLUTCH WAS ONCE AGAIN DEPRESSED. IN BOTH CASES, THE CAR STALLED AND LEFT ME WITHOUT THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE OR STEER. LUCKILY THE PROBLEM HAPPENED WHILE STOPPING AND NOT AT HIGH SPEEDS.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
