2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid Powertrain (other) Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the powertrain system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Powertrain (other) reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

I AM A 74 YEAR OLD RETIRED MAN, THE OWNER OF A 2013 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA HYBRID WITH 34,000 MILES PURCHASED NEW IN NOVEMBER 2013. THE CHECK-ENGINE LIGHT LIT UP ON MY DASHBOARD LAST MONTH AND I PROMPTLY BROUGHT THE CAR TO MY LOCAL VW DEALER. I WAS INFORMED THAT THE CLUTCH WAS SLIPPING IN FIRST GEAR (THIS IS AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) AND THAT THE APPROPRIATE REPAIR WAS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION. THE DEALER CONTACTED VOLKSWAGEN AND WAS INFORMED THAT AS THE CAR WAS 7 MONTHS BEYOND THE 5 YEAR 50,000 MILE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COSTS OF TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT. I HAVE PERSONALLY SINCE SPOKEN TO TWO REPRESENTATIVES OF CORPORATE VW AS FOLLOWS: SHARON G. VWOA CUSTOMER CARE CENTER VW REGION CASE MANAGER SUPERVISOR PHONE: 248.754.3277 KEVIN SCOTT EXECUTIVE SPECIALIST IN CUSTOMER RELATIONS PHONE: 248.754.5000 EXT 43809 BOTH REITERATED THE PARTY LINE, I.E. THE VEHICLE IS BEYOND THE 5 YR. POWERTRAIN WARRANTY AND VW HAS NO RESPONSIBILITY TO ADDRESS THE MALFUNCTION. NO CAR, BY ANY MANUFACTURER, SHOULD HAVE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE AT 34,000 MILES REGARDLESS HOW OLD THE CAR MAY BE. FURTHERMORE, THE DEALER CONFIRMS THAT HE HAS SEEN MULTIPLE JETTA HYBRIDS WITH THE IDENTICAL TRANSMISSION PROBLEM THAT HE HAS REPLACED, MOST OCCURRING WITHIN THE WARRANTY PERIOD. HE TOO WAS ASTOUNDED TO LEARN THAT CORPORATE VW WOULD REFUSE TO COVER THE REPAIR! TO BE TOLD THAT VW WILL NOT STAND BEHIND ITS PRODUCT IN WHAT IS CLEARLY A MANUFACTURING DEFECT IS BEYOND BELIEF. AS I HAVE REACHED THE END OF MY ABILITY TO HAVE VW ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE REPAIR I AM HOPING THAT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO CONTACT THEM ON MY BEHALF TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE, (XXXXXX) REDACTED TO PROTECT PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
