Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component
Data refreshed
What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2011 Volkswagen Routan, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

The contact owns a 2011 Volkswagen Routan. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. The contact was able to pull to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle failed to restart. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 190,000.

THIS VEHICLE IS BASICALLY A CHRYSLER/DODGE WITH VW BRANDING, AND ONE OF THE KEYS IS EVEN A DODGE KEY. IT HAS THE SAME ISSUE WITH THE TIPM AND FUEL RELAY MODULE THAT WAS RECALLED ON THE 2011 CHRYSLER AND DODGE VANS. SEE FUEL PUMP RELAY RECALL NHTSA 14V-530. I'M ASKING THAT IT ALSO BE RECALLED FOR THE 2011 VW ROUTAN SINCE IT'S VERY DANGEROUS THAT MY CAR COULD STOP AT ANY MOMENT. I RECENTLY PURCHASED MY VAN FROM A USED CAR DEALER IN NEW JERSEY WHO NEGLECTED TO EVEN INFORM ME THAT THIS WAS A KNOWN ISSUE EVEN THOUGH I INFORMED THEM THAT I'D BE DRIVING THE CAR CROSS COUNTRY. WHEN I WAS IN GEORGIA THE CAR STARTED CRANKING, BUT WOULDN'T START AND IT HAS HAD THIS SAME INTERMITTENT ISSUE SINCE I ARRIVED IN FL. IT TOOK A WHILE FOR US TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS EVEN WRONG WITH IT BECAUSE WHEN THE AUTO SHOP RAN A DIAGNOSTIC, NO CODES WERE RETURNED. HOWEVER, WHEN THEY FINALLY GOT THE ISSUE TO OCCUR AGAIN, THEY FOUND THAT TAPPING ON THE FUEL RELAY MODULE IN THE TIPM WOULD ALLOW THE CAR TO START. THEY ADVISED TO TAKE IT TO CHRYSLER BECAUSE IT'S ACTUALLY A CHRYSLER VAN UNDER THE HOOD. WHEN I CALLED CHRYSLER, THEY TURNED ME AWAY BECAUSE THE VIN IS FOR A VW. WHEN I CALLED VW, THEY SAID NO RECALL EXISTED FOR THIS VAN EVEN THOUGH IT'S THE SAME ISSUE. SO, I'M ASKING THAT A RECALL ALSO BE DONE ON 2011 VW ROUTAN'S SINCE THEY ARE EXPERIENCING THE EXACT SAME DANGEROUS ISSUE CALLED OUT IN THE CHRYSLER RECALL. LASTLY, I EXPERIENCED THIS ISSUE BOTH WHILE THE CAR WAS STATIONARY AND WHILE IT WAS ON THE HIGHWAY.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
The brakes randomly stop working. At random times you go to brake and have to push the pedal all the way to the floor to start stopping. 2nd issue. The car dies and looses all power at intermittent times while driving. The car has to be restarted while driving. Could be driving 70 on a hwy or 30 on a residential street. Either coast to the side of the road to restart... or quickly put the car in neutral and restart it while driving. Both of these have almost caused wrecks several times. Unknown own causes to both as they happen at random and different times.

I OWN A 2011 VOLKSWAGEN ROUTAN MINIVAN AND THE IGNITION SWITCH STOPS WORKING I KNOW THERE ARE A FEW RECALLS FOR THIS ON THE 2009 AND 2010 YEARS I CALL VW CORPORATION AND THEY SAID THEY CAN'T HELP ME JUST BECAUSE THERE'S NO RECALLS ON MY VEHICLE THE PART THEY USED IN THE PREVIOUS YEARS IS THE SAME THAT IS DAMAGE IN MY VEHICLE SO I DON'T THINK IS FAIR AND I WOULD LIKE TO GET SOME HELP FOR THIS THANK YOU
2011 VOLKSWAGEN ROUTAN ENGINE WILL UNEXPECTEDLY SHUT DOWN DURING NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS, RESULTING IN NO ENGINE POWER, NO POWER STEERING AND NO POWER BRAKES. THIS OCCURS AT ANY SPEED AND IN ANY DRIVING CONDITION FROM STATIONARY IDLING UP TO HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THIS HAS OCCURRED MULTIPLE TIMES WITH THIS VEHICLE.*DT*DT*DT*JB *TP
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.

While driving on a highway at 65 Mph, vehicle shut down, lost brakes, steering, and all power, had to coast to a stop, narrowly avoiding a collision. Upon exhaustive review, TIPM was faulty, causing starting issues, intermittent power loss, and fuel pump issues. As this van is manufactured by Chrysler (for VW) and their (identical) model has the same issue, it was known and recalled, it is appalling that no recall exists for this VW model. These vans are being financed and bought by families, and like us driven daily with children in them. The issue is widespread, very well known, but as in our case, not disclosed by dealerships as no official action has ever been taken, and no official record exists. We have learned all about it through trial and error, and are having to pay for possibly fatal errors committed on the part of the manufacturer - who, to state again, has in fact already recalled the vehicles due to it being such a wide spread and dangerous issue with a primarily family vehicle. Again, for clarity, the VW Routan is no longer in production, but when it was it was manufactured by Chrysler for VW, and is part for part a Dodge Grand Caravan/Chrysler Town and Country. Why is this critical recall in existence for only a portion of the vehicles? This has become a major issue as we have to continue reducing this van until we can sell or trade it.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim

Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
Thé engine malfunction was observed and confirmed by the Mecanicien and the cause was from the manufacture. I'm willing to submit the car for any inspection. The car is still drivable, but I have to report it. I have been trying to call since longtime in vain. Thank
"TAKATA RECALL" THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT HAS BEEN COMING ON/OFF FOR THE LAST 2 WEEKS. I CHECKED THE RECALL AND SEE THERE ISN'T ONE. I CALLED A MECHANIC AND HE COULDN'T TELL ME WHY THE LIGHT WOULD BE CONTINUALLY GOING ON/OFF. WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE?

Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
DRIVER'S SIDE SLIDING PASSENGER DOOR IS STUCK IN LOCKED POSITION. UNABLE TO OPEN DOOR MANUALLY OR WITH REMOTE. PROBLEM SHOWED UP AROUND 90,000 MILES, NO INDICATION OF A CAUSE.
THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR HAS SEVERE CORROSION ON THE BOTTOM. THIS WAS NOT NOTICED UNTIL AFTER GOING THRU A CAR WASH. IT IS RUSTING FROM THE INSIDE OUT. VW OFFERS A 5 YEAR 100,000 CORROSION WARRANTY BUT MY IN-SERVICE DATE HAS EXPIRED AND THEY WILL NOT WORK WITH ME AT ALL. THIS IS A DEFAULT IN THE DESIGN OF THE DOOR AND I HAVE FOUND SIMILAR CASES FOR THE VW ROUTAN ON THE INTERNET. THIS VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT OR HAD THIS PART OF THE VEHICLE REPAINTED FOR ANY REASON. THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN TO A 5 YEAR OLD VEHICLE.

Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
I DRIVE 90 MILES BEFORE I PARKED THE CAR IN MY GARAGE. AFTER A MINUTE OF TURNING OFF THE CAR, I NOTICED BRIGHT SPARKS AND DENSE SMOKE FROM UNDER THE DRIVER'S SEAT. I WAS ABLE TO PUT DOWN THE FIRE AFTER DUMPING A LOT OF WATER UNDER THE SEAT. AT THAT TIME THE POWER SEATS WERE FUNCTIONAL BUT HEATED SEAT WAS NOT. I TRIED TO REPRODUCE THE ISSUE BY STARTING THE CAR AND TURNING IT OFF MULTIPLE TIMES BUT IT DID NOT HAPPEN AGAIN. I LEFT THE CAR OUTSIDE THE GARAGE OVERNIGHT AND TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THE FOLLOWING MORNING, WHERE THE DEALER FOUND THE ELECTRIC WIRING HARNESS BURNT OUT. 1. ISSUE HAPPENED AFTER A MINUTE OF TURNING OFF THE CAR. 2. BRIGHT SPARKS AND FLAMES WITH VERY DENSE CAUSTIC SMELLING SMOKE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 VOLKSWAGEN ROUTAN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE EMITTED A SQUEAKING NOISE WHEN STOPPING. THE VEHICLE ALSO JERKED INTERMITTENTLY. IN ADDITION, THE FRONT PASSENGER DOOR OPENED ON ITS OWN AND WOULD NOT LOCK AUTOMATICALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES FOR THE FAILURES. THE DEALER PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PERFORMING TO SPECIFICATIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 2,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 7,465.

FUEL PUMP RUNS WITHOUT CAR TURNED ON. THE MOPAR TIPM MODULE IN THIS CAR IS A CHRYSLER PART THAT CHRYSLER RECALLED ON 2011 ROUTAN BUT VW DOES NOT HONOR THIS RECALL. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE WHICH CAUSES THE FUEL PUMP TO RUN AND DRAIN THE BATTERY DEAD ALONG WITH OTHER SAFETY ISSUES LIKE CAR STOPPING DEAD. THIS CAR CANNOT RUN WITHOUT THIS PART AND THIS RECALL MUST BE HONORED BY VW. THEY ARE MAKING US PAY FOR A NEW MODULE. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF THESE ROUTANS WITH THIS PROBLEM AND NO ONE IS LISTENING. OUR CAR WAS IN THE DRIVEWAY AND FUEL PUMP WAS RUNNING WITH CAR TURNED OFF ALL NIGHT. ALSO WHEN HUSBAND DRIVING IT, CAR WOULD SUDDENLY SLOW.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A RECARO PERFORMANCE SPORT (NA) REARFACING INFANT SEAT, MODEL NUMBER: 386.01 (NA). THE SEAT WAS LOCATED IN A 2011 VOLKSWAGEN ROUTAN. THE SEAT WAS MANUFACTURED IN AUGUST OF 2014. THE CONTACT STATED THERE WAS A NOTCH IN THE ADJUSTER LEVER, WHICH WAS IN THE LOCATION OF THE LEG SPRING TO CONTROL THE ROTATION. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO USE THE CHILD SEAT DUE TO THE BELT BEING FRAZZLED AND SNAGGED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE PURCHASE DATE WAS UNKNOWN.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 VOLKSWAGEN ROUTAN. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, ALL THE WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED AND WHITE SMOKE AND FLAMES EMERGED FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE CONTACT PULLED THE VEHICLE OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND REMOVED THE THREE CHILD PASSENGERS FROM THE VEHICLE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS NOT PRESENT. NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED. THE FIRE EXTINGUISHED ITSELF WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DETERMINED THAT THE BATTERY AND THE ALTERNATOR WERE BURNT AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE REPAIRS WERE INSUFFICIENT. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER (NEFTIN WESTLAKE VOLKSWAGEN, 3550 AUTO MALL DRIVE, THOUSAND OAKS, CALIFORNIA 91362) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TOTALLY INTEGRATED PROGRAM MODULE AND TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 VOLKSWAGEN ROUTAN. WHILE DRIVING 40-50 MPH, THE ENGINE STALLED AND THE BATTERY APPEARED TO HAVE FAILED. THE ENGINE STALLED WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. THE CONTACT PULLED THE VEHICLE OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE CONTACT TURNED OFF, RESTARTED THE ENGINE SEVERAL TIMES, AND THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO OPERATE NORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE CONTACT ALSO EXPERIENCED THE FAILURE EIGHT MONTHS AGO. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO THE DEALER (RUSTY WALLIS, 12635 LYNDON B JOHNSON FWY, GARLAND TX 75041) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TORQUE CONVERTER WAS FAULTY. THE DEALER PAID FOR ANOTHER DIAGNOSTIC TEST AT HENDRICKS VOLKSWAGEN (5010 STATE HWY 121, FRISCO, TX 75034) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TORQUE CONVERTER, TOTALLY INTEGRATED POWER MODULE, TWO CAM SHAFT SENSORS, AND THE TORQUE CONVERTER SOLENOID WERE FAULTY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AT 1-800-822-8987 AND DID NOT ASSIST. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000.

I DRIVE A 2011 VW ROUTAN SE AND AM HAVING TO REPLACE WHEEL BEARINGS. THIS IS NOT A REPAIR THAT SHOULD LIKELY REALLY EVER NEED TO BE DONE LET ALONE ON ALL 4 WHEELS AT UNDER 100K MILES . THIS IS RIDICULOUS AND A RECALL NEEDS TO HAPPEN ASAP

I HAVE A VOLKSWAGEN ROUTAN 2011 BUILT BY CHRYSLER IN A CANADA FACTORY. THIS VEHICLE IS SHUTTING OFF WHEN DRIVE ON THE FREEWAY. THE GEARS AND SREERING LOCKS UP WHILE DRIVING. THE VEHICLE ALSO HAS ELECTRICAL ISSUES THE LIGHTS TURN ON AND OFF EVEN WHEN THE CAR IS OFF. AFTER PURCHASING A NEW BATTERY AND ALTERNATOR THE CAR IN THE MORNING WILL NOT START. THE BATTERY IS DEAD AND DRAINED. WITH NOTHING ON IT INTERMITTENTLY HAS A DEAD BATTERY AND SHUTS OF AFTER STARTING THE CAR. WHEN I CALL THE VOLKSWAGEN DEALER IN STOCKTON CA TO EXPLAIN THE SERVICE GUY HUNG UP ON MY HUSBAND AND I AND STATED IT'S NOT A RECALL. WE EXPLAIN THAT THOUSANDS ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE AND IT'S RECORDED AND ALL OVER YOU TUBE. WE ARE HAVING THE SAME IGNITION SWITCH ISSUES OR POSSIBLE TIPM ISSUES.
