2015 Volvo XC60 Driver assistance Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the driver-assistance system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Driver assistance reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Component/System that failed: The engine (T5 Drive-E) experienced sudden loss of propulsion and entered reduced engine performance mode. The vehicle is currently available for inspection and was towed to an authorized Volvo dealer following the incident. How safety was put at risk: On July 3, 2025, while driving approximately 75 mph on a crowded interstate highway in rural Ohio with cruise control engaged, the vehicle suddenly and without warning lost propulsion. Traffic included semi-trucks and other vehicles, with limited shoulder availability. The sudden loss of acceleration at highway speed created an immediate risk of rear-end collision and left the vehicle unsafe to operate. Confirmation or reproduction: Prior to the failure, in July 2024 at approximately 92,000 miles, I reported abnormal oil consumption to an authorized Volvo dealer and raised a known Volvo service advisory related to oil consumption in the T5 Drive-E engine. The dealer acknowledged the advisory but refused testing, stating the vehicle did not meet Volvo’s internal threshold. After the failure, a service agent acknowledged that this issue is known to occur in this model at approximately this mileage. Inspections: The vehicle was serviced at an authorized Volvo dealer in Bethesda, Maryland just days prior to the incident. Following the failure, the vehicle was towed to an authorized Volvo dealer in Columbus, Ohio. Volvo Cars USA has not repaired the vehicle and denied a goodwill request. Warnings or symptoms prior to failure: There were no warning lamps or messages prior to the loss of propulsion. The engine warning light and a “Reduced Engine Performance” message appeared only after power was lost.

TOOK CAR THROUGH THE CAR WASH. AS I WAS SLOWLY EXITING TO PARK INTO A SPOT TO VACUUM THE CAR, I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR TO DRIVE UP TO THE SPOT AND STARTED TO PUT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE WHEN THE CAR BY ITSELF REVVED UP THE ACCELERATION JUMPED OVER THE CURVE EVEN AS I WAS LITERALLY STANDING ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO GET THE CAR TO STOP. FINALLY IT DID STOP AND THANKFULLY THERE WAS NO-ONE IN FRONT WHEN THIS HAPPENED. I HAVE CALLED THE DEALER TO CHECK WHETHER THERE HAS BEEN ANY RECALLS AND WAS TOLD THAT NONE HAVE BEEN ISSUED. I NEED TO LEAVE THE CAR FOR THEM TO INSPECT IT WHICH I PLAN TO DO. I DID A LITTLE RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET AND HAVE FOUND SEVERAL COMPLAINTS IDENTICAL TO MINE. IT WAS A VERY TERRIFYING MOMENT.

WE HAVE IN AT LEAST 2 OCCASIONS EXPERIENCE THE FEATURE "CITY SAFETY" ON OUR VOLVO XC60 2015 , BRAKING TO A STOP WHILE WE ARE IN TRAFFIC FOR NO APPARENT REASON. THE COMPANY AS WELL AS THE DEALERSHIP CLAIM THIS IS HOW THE FEATURE IS SUPPOSE TO WORK . ACCORDING TO THEM THE SOFTWARE HAS ITS LIMITATIONS AND THESE LIMITATIONS INCLUDE THE CAR STOPING ABRUPTLY AND DANGEROUSLY. THE FEATURE CAN BE TURNED OFF BUT IT WILL RESET ITSELF TO ON EVERY TIME THE CAR IS RESTARTED. THE ADVICE WAS FOR US TO TURN THE FEATURE OFF EVERY TIME WE DRIVE IN THE CITY AND OR THROUGH FOG WITH DEFEATS THE PURPOSE OF A FEATURE CALLED "CITY SAFE" . WE BELIEVE THAT THE COMPANY DOES NOT WANT TO ADMIT THAT THE FIRST GENERATION OF THIS FEATURE IS NOT STREET SAFE . THANK YOU

I WAS DRIVING AND MY VEHICLE COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN LEAVING ME STRANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. I WAS NOT ABLE TO TURN ON THE HAZARD LIGHTS. IT APPEARED AS IF SOMEONE COMPLETED UNPLUGGED MY CAR FROM THE POWER OUTLET. COMPLETELY BLACK SCREEN ON ALL ELECTRONICS AND IF THE DOOR OPENED NO LIGHTS CAME ON. I HAVE THE VEHICLE AT THE DEALER AND THEY INDICATED THAT THEIR MIGHT BE A CORRUPT FILE AND A SOFTWARE UPDATE IS REQUIRED. I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN TO ANYONE ELSE. THIS HAPPENED WHILE I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. ALSO, THE CAR WAS NOT ABLE TO GO IN NEUTRAL.

VEHICLE HAS BEEN TAKEN TO DEALER MANY TIMES OVER TWO YEARS FOR INTERMITTENT FAILURE OF THE PASSENGER SIDE BLIS. WILL FAIL TO INDICATE VEHICLE IN BLINDSPOT IN MOTION OR STATIONARY. ESCALATED TO VOLVO, THEIR MECHANIC SAYS WORKING AS DESIGNED, REGARDLESS OF FAILURES. WILL ESCALATE HIGHER LEVEL. DRIVERS SIDE BLIS WORKS WITHOUT FAILURE. VOLVO SAYS TRAVELING EAST/WEST IS PROBLEM, DESPITE BEING TOLD FAILURE OCCURS WHILE TRAVELING NORTH/SOUTH.

I HAVE SERIOUS QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW A SMALL BUMP THAT SCRAPED THE FRONT TIRE, BUT DID NOT EVEN SCRAPE THE EXTERIOR OF THE CAR COULD CAUSE THE ENTIRE REAR END SUSPENSION AND STABILIZATION BAR TO HAVE TO BE COMPLETELY REPLACED. ARE THERE STRUCTURAL PROBLEMS WITH THE VOLVO XC60S THAT COULD CASES THIS? THE CAR WASN'T MOVING MORE THAN 10 MPH AS IT WAS CROSSING AN INTERSECTION FROM A STANDSTILL AT A LIGHT IN A CITY WHEN THE RIGHT TIRE BUMPED SOMETHING IN THE ROAD. IT WAS GOING STRAIGHT.
