Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

ON JULY 22, 2014, I WAS DRIVING ON RT 95 IN CT WHEN THE KAYAK ON TOP OF MY CAR CAME OFF AND WENT SLIDING DOWN I-95. FORTUNATELY TRAFFIC WAS LIGHT AND NO WAS HURT. THE PROBLEM WAS THE FAILURE OF A YAKIMA-SUPPLIED CAM STRAP. I DO NOT KNOW HOW OFTEN THESE STRAPS FAIL, BUT THIS IS A POTENTIALLY SERIOUS PROBLEM. I HAVE NOW GONE BACK TO USING MARINE ROPE TO ATTACH MY KAYAK, AND I HAVE DRIVEN OVER 10,000 MILES WITH THIS SETUP AND NEVER HAVE HAD A PROBLEM. *TR

I TRIED TO INSTALL A YAKIMA ROOF RACK ON A NAKED ROOF. THE Q TOWERS CONNECT THE CROSS-BARS TO THE CLIPS THAT ATTACH TO THE ROOF. THE ROOF RACK IS SECURED BY SNAPPING THE CAM COVERS THAT ARE PART OF THE Q TOWERS. WITH THE Q TOWERS THAT I PURCHASED, I WAS NOT ABLE TO FULLY SNAP THE CAM COVERS AS THEIR SHAPE WAS NOT RIGHT. I BORROWED Q TOWERS FROM A FRIEND WHO HAD AN OLDER MODEL AND COULD INSTALL THE BARS WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM. WITHOUT THE CAM COVER FULLY ENGAGED, THE Q TOWERS ARE LOOSE AND THE ROOF RACK COULD DETACH FROM THE ROOF. *TR
