Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
0
InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

That does not guarantee a specific vehicle is unaffected — recalls are issued against VINs, and new campaigns are announced regularly. Check a VIN on NHTSA.gov.

MISHAFT SNAPPED, CAUSING THE NUT TO POTENTIALLY LOCKUP THE DRIVE SHAFT AND REAR WHEEL, POTENTIALLY CAUSING LOSS OF CONTROL AND CRASH. THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF REPORTS ON THE MOTORCYCLE FORUMS FOR THE VSTAR 1100 SERIES. SHAFT SNAPS UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS AND CAN BE DISTINGUISHED BY A HIGH PITCH WHINE DURING DECELERATION AS THE BROKEN-OFF SHAFT NUT GRINDS AGAINST THE DRIVE SHAFT.

I HAVE A 2001 YAMAHA V-STAR 1100 CLASSIC. MY MOTORCYCLE IS EXPERIENCING WHAT APPEARS TO BE A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM WITH STARTERS FOR THIS MOTORCYCLE MODEL. SINCE THE MOTORCYCLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY, YAMAHA WILL NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM. JUDGING FROM THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE ON THE 1100 V-STAR 1100 FORUM, THIS IS A VERY WIDESPREAD PROBLEM THAT HAS YET TO BE ADDRESSED BY YAMAHA. MY MOTORCYCLE IS DISPLAYING THE SAME PROBLEMS THAT INDICATE A FAULTY STARTER, I.E "TWISTED CONNECTOR BOLTS". IS THERE ANY WAY WE CAN FORCE YAMAHA TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE?

THE VEHICLE HAD JUST PASSED THE WARRANTY DATE WHEN THE STARTER FAILED. THE DEALER WAS CONSULTED ALONG WITH THE MANUFACTURER, BUT NEITHER WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM UNLESS THE CONSUMER PAID FOR IT. *AK *SCC *JB

I OWN A 2001 YAMAHA V-STAR 1100 MOTORCYCLE. THIS MODEL OF YAMAHA HAS A STARTER DEFECT. THE STARTER DOES NOT HAVE A CLUTCH AND UPON SHUTDOWN OF THE MOTOR THE STARTER KICKS BACK AND TWISTS THE STARTER BACKWARDS THROWING IT OUT OF ALIGNMENT AND BREAKING THE ALIGNMENT TABS OFF. THEY HAVE RECENTLY COME OUT WITH A NEW STARTER WITH A CLUTCH, BUT CHARGE UPWARDS OF $300.00 FOR IT. I FEEL THIS PART IS DEFECTIVE AND SHOULD BE RECALLED. MANY OTHERS HAVE HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM ALSO. *PH

Manufacturer communications

A bulletin sent by a manufacturer to its dealers. Not a recall, and repairs are not necessarily free.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
