Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

The defect: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: LIGHT DUTY EXTENDED CAB CONVERSION PICKUP TRUCKS BY AMERICAN VAN. THE SEAT RECLINER TO SEAT FRAME ATTACHING BOLTS ON THESE VEHICLES COULD LOOSEN, FATIGUE, AND FRACTURE, ALLOWING THE SEAT BACK TO SUDDENLY RECLINE.
The risk: IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR TO THE DRIVER'S SEAT, THIS COULD RESULT IN A SUDDEN LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE ACCIDENT.
The remedy: VSS IS CONDUCTING THE NOTIFICATION AND REMEDY CAMPAIGN FOR THIS RECALL. DEALERS WILL REMOVE ALL FOAM AND/OR FABRIC SANDWICHED BETWEEN THE RECLINER ASSEMBLY AND THE SEAT FRAME, INSTALL WASHERS BETWEEN THE SEAT RECLINER AND THE SEAT FRAME AT EACH ATTACHMENT POINT, AND INSTALL NEW ATTACHING BOLTS TORQUED TO A HIGHER SPECIFICATION. THESE CORRECTIONS WILL BE MADE TO BOTH THE DRIVER'S AND PASSENGER'S SEATS.

STARTED VAN IN DRIVEWAY WIRING CAUGHT ON FIRE UNDERNEATH THE HOOD OF THE VAN THAT IS ATTACHED TO THE OVERDRIVE. I CALLED FORD THEY PUT A CLAIM ON IT AND SAID I WOULD HAVE TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY SINCE THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE VEHICLE IT COULD CATCH ON FIRE SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY. UNFORTUNATELY, I DO NOT HAVE INSURANCE ON THE VEHICLE OR A UPDATED TAG. FORD SAID IT WAS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO HAVE IT TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP, BUT WITHOUT A UPDATED TAG OR INSURANCE THERE IS NO TOWING COMPANY THAT WILL TOW IT.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
