Fuel system

1.) The Bosch CP4 High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP), OEM part number 13517824477 / 0445010517, failed catastrophically. This is the factory-installed pump on the 2014 BMW 328d equipped with the N47 diesel engine. Upon failure, the pump's internal cam and roller assembly disintegrated, releasing metal shavings throughout the entire fuel system — contaminating the fuel lines, injectors, fuel rail, and fuel tank. The vehicle will not start. The failed pump and contaminated fuel system components are available for inspection upon request. 2.) The vehicle experienced a sudden, complete loss of motive power with no prior warning, rendering it unable to start or operate. This type of failure — as documented in NHTSA Engineering Analysis EA23-001 — is known to also occur while the vehicle is in motion, causing unexpected engine stall at highway speeds with no ability to restart. This creates an immediate risk of rear-end collision, loss of vehicle control, and danger to other motorists. The failure provides no warning to the driver and cannot be prevented through normal maintenance practices. 3.) Yes. The high-pressure fuel pump failure and presence of metal shavings throughout the fuel system have been confirmed by a BMW authorized dealership. The dealer has documented the failure and provided a repair estimate for full fuel system replacement — including the HPFP, injectors, fuel lines, and tank cleaning — at an estimated cost of $10,000–$15,000. BMW of North America has declined warranty coverage citing that the vehicle has exceeded the 120,000-mile threshold under Recall 21V-586, despite this being the identical defect covered by that recall. 4.) The fuel system has failed. The car shut off in the Baltimore harbor tunnel twice completely stopping traffic and creating a very hazard situation. One of those two times the semi truck behind me had to slam its brakes. When the car shuts off you must come to a complete stop and turn the car completely off. After restarting the car is in limp mode with reduced power. The incident has happened about 6 other times. Every time it happens I have feared my safety, especially if there is no shoulder to coast the car in to park. Independent service center has replaced three sensors related to fuel pressure system which did not fix. The vehicle and component has not been inspected by manufacture, police, insurance representatives or others. The manufacture claims there are no recalls on the fuel system of the vehicle. The vehicle has a rebuilt title from a small accident because no parts were available during covid so the insurance wrote the car off. The car was inspected by the state of North Carolina and deemed safe for the road. There is no indication that the car is going to shut off. It just cuts power and shuts off. After restarting the car, it will show a check engine light on the cluster and a drivetrain error on the infotainment screen . The error code p0087 Fuel/rail system Pressure - too low bank 1

Vehicle experienced sudden engine failure while driving due to timing chain failure on N47 diesel engine, a known defect. Loss of propulsion occurred without warning, creating a safety risk.
I am reporting an emissions-related malfunction that occurred a very short time after BMW performed the EGR cooler recall and updated the DDE software on my vehicle. Shortly after the recall work, the vehicle began showing DDE fault code 2BB300 – Particulate Sensor Measuring Electrode, Self-Diagnosis, which triggered the MIL. This issue did not exist at any point before the recall. Although my vehicle is now older than 10 years, the critical concern is that this emissions-related failure appeared soon after the recall intervention, indicating a potential recall-associated defect rather than normal age-related wear. The fault was diagnosed at BMW West Houston, where it was confirmed; however, I was told no warranty or goodwill support could be provided due to vehicle age, despite the timing suggesting a recall-related cause. BMW’s emissions warranty extension bulletin (NHTSA TSB ID: MC-10160282-9999) lists particulate sensor failures (2BB700–2BA200) as known issues. Many BMW diesel owners have reported similar particulate sensor faults shortly after the EGR cooler recall and related software changes, suggesting a broader pattern. If the EGR recall or subsequent software calibration is leading to particulate sensor failures and MIL activation, this may represent a post-recall emissions defect affecting compliance. I request that NHTSA evaluate whether the EGR recall may be contributing to widespread particulate sensor failures. The primary failure involves the EGR cooler system covered under Recall 21V-907, with consequential damage to the intake system, including intake air leaks, charge pipe failure, displaced turbo-to-DPF V-band clamp, brittle/cracked fuel lines, and intake system integrity loss. Yes — the vehicle and all affected components are available for inspection upon request The EGR cooler internal leak defect and intake system failures create risk of engine overheating, thermal degradation, loss of engine power under boost, exhaust gas leakage, and potential fire hazard, which can cause unsafe driving conditions and sudden loss of vehicle performance The vehicle was presented to a BMW dealership, and the recall defect was acknowledged. The dealer confirmed that any decisions regarding inspection and repair must come from BMW corporate. The dealership refused to inspect or evaluate the recall-related failures pending corporate authorization. No. BMW of North America has not authorized inspection or evaluation. The dealership also refused to inspect the vehicle pending corporate direction. Yes. Symptoms included audible air leaks, intake pressure loss under boost, performance degradation, and component failures occurring both before and after recall repair attempts. These symptoms developed during the period when the vehicle was operating under a known recall-defect condition and continued after recall repair.
The contact owns a 2014 BMW 328D. The contact stated that after parking and turning off the vehicle on the slightly inclined driveway, the contact exited the vehicle and walked to the front door of the residence. The contact then noticed that the vehicle was rolling backward. The contact stated that the vehicle rolled back onto the street and stopped independently. The contact was able to drive the vehicle back into the driveway. The contact stated that upon shifting to park(P), the failure recurred. The contact engaged the electric parking brake, and the vehicle responded as needed. The dealer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V185000 (Power Train); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 170,000.

12/2023 - Sewell BMW replaced EGR, all H/P fuel lines at injectors due to corrosion, injector harness due to heat damage to the wire jackets, cracked coolant pipe. At 145,976 that's an additional 22,315 miles on the 60,000 mile 2015 replacement engine. Total repair costs $3,939.45. 08/23/2024 - Passed inspection, odometer 149,701. 09/09/2024- Only 2 weeks later an estimate of 4,000 miles after replacing injector harness and H/P fuel lines, engine went up in flames, reason unknown. Pictures attached, vehicle was a total loss.
[XXX] - Purchase vehicle, odometer 109,803. 11/2019 - Car went into limp mode while driving on highway. Towed to BMW dealership and was advised needed new engine, at the time it only had 123,661 miles on it. Towed to EurAuto Shop for installation of replacement engine. 02/2020- The shop replaced the ceased OEM engine with a 2015 engine, with only 60,000 miles on it. EurAuto Shop tore down OEM engine and confirmed the timing chain guide broke, resulting in jumped timing and caused valve to hit piston. Total cost for engine replacement $6,641.49. The contact owns a 2014 BMW 328D. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V755000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The contact stated that while driving 60 MPH, the vehicle inadvertently decelerated to 40 MPH. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The EGR cooling message was displayed in the information center. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where she was informed about fault code 29EB-00. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 89,000.
WHILE PULLING SLOWLY INTO A PARKING LANE IN A RESIDENTIAL PULBIC LOT TO PARK, THE VEHICLE ENTERED INTO A SUDDEN HIGH ACCELERATION WITHOUT ANY DRIVER ADDITONAL INPUT. IT CRASHED ON A TREE AT THE PARKING LOT PERIMETER WITH A MAJOR DAMAGE ON THE VEHICLE FRONT END. IT OCCURRED AT 10:30 AM WITH DRIVER IN GREAT HEALTH CONDITION AND HAD VERY LIMITED TIME TO REACT. NO AIRBAG WAS DEPLOYED NOR ANY PERSONAL INJURY OCCURED.

After a drive from Denver to Breckenridge on snowy roads the car was parked in an unplowed parking space. When the car was moved 1 hr later the car had no ABS--flashing on dash, no traction control--flashing on dash and steering was ineffective. Car was only drivable by backing into a space. 20 hrs later the car was to be moved again...again, everything flashed on dash...no ABS, no traction control, drive train failure and car just slid. Steering was totally ineffective. Car was pushed by people on both sides until dry pavement was reached. Car was restarted and I resumed driving on dry pavement back to Denver. Had car "read" by my mechanic and then again by a BMW certified mechanic. No codes were available! The speculation was that my wheel sensors froze. If my Xdrive can't be driven in snow, what's going on. There were two drivers involved in this and both of us reported a total lack of control of the vehicle.
LOSS OF POWER ASSIST TO BRAKING TWICE WHILE MOVING AT LOW SPEED WHEN APPROACHING A STOP. UNABLE TO BRING VEHICLE TO FULL STOP THE FIRST TIME AS IT WAS A DOWNHILL. SECOND TIME TRAVELING ON A SLIGHT UPGRADE WHICH HELPED BRING THE VEHICLE TO A STOP. BROUGHT TO DEALERSHIP FOR DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR. THEY SAID THAT BRAKE BOOSTER, ONE-WAY LINE, O-RING ETC. NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO OIL CONTAMINATION. WHILE THIS MODEL YEAR IS NOT SPECIFICALLY LISTED IN RECALL 10V-446 IT SOUNDS LIKE EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM. WAS THIS RECALL EXPANDED TO THE F30 PLATFORM? IF NOT SHOULD IT BE?

Body & structure

Occasionally it is impossible to unlock the door from the inside with the manual door unlock. The door operates in a two-step manner - pull the door latch once to unlock the door, and then pull again to open the door. However, sometimes the first pull fails to unlock the door and the only way to unlock the vehicle is with the electric door unlock. When this occurs, there is notable tension in the door handle, and the pop-up unlock indicator does move upwards in synch with the door handle position - it's simply not reaching the unlock point, and there is resistance felt in the door latch. Even trying to assist the mechanism by grasping the unlock indicator (as doors used to be unlocked in this fashion) does not work. Obviously, if the electric system fails for any reason, not being able to open the door is a major safety issue. When this happens it is also observed that the electric lock operates very slowly. Instead of the post popping up and unlocking almost immediately, it takes a second or two for the door to unlock, as if there is additional internal resistance in the mechanism. This is observed on BOTH the driver and passenger side doors. I have brought this to the attention of the dealer on separate occasions. The suggestion has been to replace a cable in the door due to stretch. However, based on the nature of the issue and the symptoms in both doors it seems like an issue with the latch or locking mechanism itself. The passenger door is unlocked very infrequently compared to the driver's door and it seem unlikely they would wear at the same rate if it was a cable stretch issue. I have been able to record a video of this problem occurring. I plan to show it to the dealer at my next service in the next couple weeks since they were unable to replicate the issue.

WHEN TURNING LEFT OR RIGHT, THE POWER TO THE WHEELS IS NOT ENGAGED. HOWEVER, WHEN THE TIRE IS STRAIGHT, THE POWER ENGAGES. THIS ACTION PREVENTS YOU FROM DRIVING NORMALLY. TO DRIVE, YOU HAVE TO STRAIGHTEN OUT THE WHEEL STRAIGHT. THEN AS YOU INCREASE VELOCITY, YOU MAKE YOUR TURN. CAN BE VERY UNSAFE AS YOU ARE DRIVING IF THIS HAPPENS (BREAKS) ON THE ROAD. *TR
VEHICLE CRUISING AT 70MPH ON THE FREEWAY WHEN THE CAR STALLED OUT WITH NO WARNING. IT SIMPLY WENT INTO NEUTRAL AND CUT THE ENGINE, RENDERING THE VEHICLE HARD TO CONTROL SINCE POWER STEERING AND BRAKING WERE NOT WORKING. THE CAR BROKE DOWN AGAIN WITHOUT WARNING ON A CITY SURFACE STREET WITH A SPEED LIMIT OF 45MPH. INDEPENDENT MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THAT THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP IMPLODED, SENDING METAL THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM. AGAIN THERE WAS NO WARNING AND BRAKING/STEERING WERE AFFECTED.

OEM wheels had been taken off for winter and stored outside under cover. They had been fine when taken off. When put back on, one was found to have low pressure. It was pumped to proper inflation. The next day while driving, the low pressure warning went off. The wheel was checked and ~1" crack was found from the inboard outer edge of the rim toward the center. Rim is a 17"x7.5 BMW alloy wheel that came with the car. There was no damage to the tire, which had been put on about 7000 miles earlier. Wheel had about 120000 miles. Safety concern is from unexpected loss of air pressure putting tire at risk of excessive wear and failure.

The driver side door lock mechanism failed completely while the driver was in the vehicle, making it impossible to open the driver side door or exit the vehicle normally. Neither the interior door handle, nor the central power lock/unlock control, nor the remote key fob, nor the physical key inserted into the door lock from the outside can unlock the door. The driver was forced to exit the vehicle by moving the driver seat to an extreme aft position, then climbing over the center console into the passenger seat, to exit via the passenger door. If the power seat adjustment had been inoperable, egress would have bee significantly more difficult. If the driver had been involved in a collision, or otherwise needed to exit the vehicle very quickly, they would have been severely hindered from doing so. Inability to operate the driver side door represents a safety hazard to the driver. No warning messages or lamps were present in the vehicle before or after the door lock mechanism failure. The driver side door remains inoperable after completely switching off the vehicle ignition and turning it back on.

WARNING COMES PARKING LIGHT MALFUNCTION AND WARNING REMAINS ON THE DASHBOARD BUT THERE IS NO ISSUE WITH THE PARKING LIGHT. IT WORKS JUST FINE. AFTER COUPLE OF MONTHS LATER WARNING GOES AWAY. AND AFTER COUPLE OF MONTHS LATER WARNING COMES BACK.

The contact owns a 2014 BMW 328D equipped with Nexen Tires, Tire Line: Winguard Sport 2, Tire Size: 225/50/R17, DOT Number 8EJRHMEL2519. The contact stated that while driving at 45 MPH, the instrument panel alerted him that the rear driver side tire had begun to rapidly deflate. The contact pulled over and discovered that the tire was nearly flat and that the tread had separated from the tire. The contact managed to slowly drive the vehicle home where he replaced all four tires. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The tire failure mileage was approximately 20,000. The vehicle failure mileage was approximately 163,000. The contact stated that the manufacturer was notified via a website and the tires are no longer available.
