2009 BMW 335I Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

2009 BMW 3 Series with factory optioned Sport Steering wheel has no recalls, but still has a 2017 production Takata PSDI-5 airbag with the yellow sticker. This airbag was replaced during the interim period, before the revised design was released. It was manufactured in 2017, but used the same design as the original. This airbag is now 9 years old, and I fear it has the same shrapnel risk as the original unit replaced in 2017. East Bay BMW did not take my concern seriously when I made an appointment, citing the fact that there were no recalls for my VIN. There was no inspection performed. The only option I have is buying a used airbag with a 2018+ production date and white sticker. I would like reassurance that my airbag won't kill me, or some help from the manufacturer.

Positive battery cable heat up cause fire above battery. Blow off wire worked blowing off. Distribution box and power pole connection sparking heating up causing arc fire. No recalls for my specific Vin but 2008 through 2012 recalls this part but not for my vehicle. 2009 335 convertible. ? $1132 to fix. 9 months ago 2021 BMW could not find problem recommended changing my alternator never recommended changing the recalled part that I am now having changed at my own expense. Very scary I have the car returned to me but I was only able to drive limited distances as the cable deteriorated I was limited more and more use of the vehicle until ultimately I drove to BMW to have it fixed and the wire exploded a mile before exiting the freeway very scary.

My car randomly started throwing an error for a failure with the passenger restraint system. From what I have read it has something to do with the OC3 Mat in the seat that detects if there is an occupant, and if the weight of the occupant is considered to be that of an adult, so the airbag does not deploy in the wrong circumstances, which is potentially dangerous to anyone that may ride in the passenger seat. There has been an extended warranty, and recall for previous years of E90 BMWs, but 2009 may not be included, even though the seats should be the same. I plan on contacting the dealership for further investigation, but I know I cannot afford to have this safety feature fixed out of my pocket at this time. Thank you for your time.

I AM VERY HAPPY TO SEE YOUR ORGANIZATION TAKING AN INTEREST IN THIS ISSUE. THIS IS A DANGEROUS PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE THAT BMWNA IS WELL AWARE OF, BUT INSISTS THAT IT IS "NORMAL BEHAVIOR" FOR MY CAR/TRANSMISSION. I BROUGHT THE CAR INTO THE DEALER, AND THEY WERE ABLE TO REPRODUCE IT, BUT THEY WERE TOLD BY BMW THAT THIS WAS "NORMAL BEHAVIOR." THE PROBLEM OCCURS WHEN YOU SLOW DOWN- LIKE FOR A TURN, BUT DO NOT COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE DCT TRANSMISSION SEEMS TO HAVE TROUBLE FIGURING OUT WHAT GEAR TO SELECT BECAUSE WHEN YOU STEP ON THE GAS TO ACCELERATE, THERE IS A VERY SIGNIFICANT DELAY IN THE ONSET OF POWER- UP TO 2-3 SECONDS. BY THIS TIME, THE DRIVER IS USUALLY REALLY DIGGING INTO THE THROTTLE. THE TRANSMISSION FINALLY PICKS A GEAR, WHICH RESULTS IN THE CAR SUDDENLY LURCHING FORWARD, SOMETIMES INVOKING THE ANTI-SKIP CONTROL. THE DANGER IN THIS BEHAVIOR OCCURS WHEN MAKING A TURN INTO ON-COMING TRAFFIC AFTER SLOWING DOWN TO AROUND 10-15 MPH. AFTER THE TURN, THE CAR IS POSITIONED IN THE TRAFFIC LANE, BUT YOU HAVE NO POWER TO ACCELERATE INTO THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC. THE ONCOMING CARS ARE NOW CLOSING IN ON YOUR CAR AT A FAST RATE, AND YOU'RE BASICALLY STUCK. THIS SITUATION IS MOST PRONOUNCED IN THE "AUTO" MODE OF THE DCT TRANSMISSION, BUT ALSO OCCURS TO A LESSER DEGREE WHILE IN THE MANUAL MODE WHEN YOU SELECT SECOND GEAR IN PREPARATION FOR THE TURN. IT IS ALSO VERY REPEATABLE IN BOTH MODES. THESE PROBLEMS STARTED OCCURRING AFTER A PREVIOUS RECALL ON THIS TRANSMISSION WHERE THE ENGINE WOULD STALL UNDER HARD BRAKING OR NOT SHIFT UNDER HARD BRAKING. THE RECALL FIXED THAT PROBLEM, BUT INTRODUCED THIS PROBLEM, WHICH OCCURS ALMOST EVERY DAY WHEREAS THE PREVIOUS PROBLEM ONLY OCCURRED DURING A SPECIFIC SITUATION. THANK YOU FOR LOOKING INTO MATTER. *TR

LONG CRANKS, STUTTERING UPON PUSHING ON THE ACCELERATOR WITH LURCHING SENSATION AND FRONT ENGINE BLOCK SHAKING. IT USED TO OCCUR EVERY DAY BEFORE THEY REPLACED MY FIRST HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP AT 2500 MILES. SECOND TIME I HAD LONG CRANKS A FEW TIMES A WEEK WITH LURCHING/STUTTERING SENSATION UPON PUSHING ON THE ACCELERATOR WHILE HI-WAY DRIVING EVERY DAY. I HAVE A 2009 BMW 335I . VIN [XXX]. I'VE HAD MY HPFP REPLACED ONCE. THE SECOND TIME AROUND THEY JUST REPROGRAMMED THE HPFP BUT I STILL GET LONG CRANKS 2 A WEEK WITH LURCHING/STUTTERING ON HI-WAY ACCELERATION ATTEMPTS. STARTING WITH ELECTRICAL THE DASH SCREEN HAS BEEN TURNING ON AND OFF ON ITS OWN SINS I BOUGHT THE CAR. DEALER CANT REPLICATE PROBLEM BECAUSE IT ONLY HAPPENS SO OFTEN. WATER PUMP AND GAS PUMP HAVE GAVE ME PROBLEMS EVEN AFTER THEY FIX IT. AFTER RECALL FOR HEATER ISSUES, MY CAR ABSORBS FUMES FROM THE ENGINE. ADVISER AND SUPERVISOR FROM BMW DEALER SAY THAT IS NORMAL CAUSE THAT'S WHERE THE CAR GETS THE HEAT FROM. CENTER DIVIDER FROM INSIDE OF THE CAR GETS EXTREMELY HOT WHEN I HAVE HEATER ON, TO WHERE I CAN FEEL THE HEAT GO THROUGH MY JEANS. ADVISERS AND SUPERVISOR ALSO STATE THAT IS NORMAL, BECAUSE EXHAUST PIPES RUN THROUGH THERE. NONE OF THIS MAKES ANY SENSE TO ME. I'VE CALLED CORPORATE PLENTY OF TIMES THROUGH OUT THE YEARS AND THEY TEND TO HELP AT TIMES. BUT THIS TIME I FEEL LIKE I HAVE A LEMON PROBLEM. WHAT CAN I DO?
