After arriving at the destination and inspecting underneath the hood of the vehicle, the contact noticed that the terminal door for the jumper cables and the housing were smoking. Additionally, there were burned areas surrounding the battery. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the electronic control module had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact became aware of NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V704000 (Steering); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. THE CAR DOORS GET STUCK IN LOCKED STATE AND WILL NOT UNLOCK FROM INSIDE. THIS HAPPENS WHEN VEHICLE IS PARKED AFTER A DRIVE OR WHEN YOU START UP THE VEHICLE AND IT IS IN PARKED POSITION. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AS THE DRIVER OR PASSENGER CAN GET LOCKED INSIDE THE CAR. THIS HAPPENS DUE TO FAILED LOCK ACTUATOR AND POSSIBLE MECHANICAL FAILURE IN THE DOOR LOCK MECHANISM. THIS ISSUE IS EXTREMELY WIDESPREAD YET THERE IS NO RECALL FROM BMW ON THIS ISSUE. HERE IS A LINK WHERE MANY PEOPLE HAVE REPORTED THE SAME ISSUE. BMW DOES NOT HAVE A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE AND THE REPAIR IS CHARGEABLE EVEN IF THE SAME ISSUE AFFECTS MULTIPLE DOORS OVER A PERIOD OF TIME. Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
