What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2009 BMW K1300 GT, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

I purchased this 2009 BMW K1300GT used from a dealer 3 weeks ago. He only let me do a short test drive around the block and it ran fine. I purchased it and began riding it daily to and from work, 48 miles round trip. There are 6 lights and 4 Stop sighs on my route. If I do a slow roll through a stop it comes close to stalling. If there are several cars ahead of me at a stop sign, or I hit a red light and have to wait awhile or sit through three lights at traffic hour, it stalls while I'm waiting. This has happened many times. Yesterday during traffic hour I was at a red light that cycled three times until I got through it. The bike stalled five times there. One time it stalled at a red light. Just before it turned green it stalled again, turning my rear lights off. There was a full size truck rolling up behind me very fast. Since it stalled out and the lights were off, it appeared to him that I was moving. At the last second he slammed on his brakes, I started the bike and quickly rode onto the shoulder and he drove by me still skidding. I would have been killed! The dealer never said a word about this well known and highly documented issue with this year, make and model of this BMW motorcycle.
ENGINE STOPS INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING STOP AND GO IN CITY TRAFFIC UNDER 10 TO 15 MILES PER HOUR. THE PROBLEM STARTED IN 2010. BMW HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM AFTER 4 ATTEMPTS. THE ENGINE STILL STOPS. I KEEP COMPLAINING TO BMW. TOLD TO GET LOST.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.

ENGINE STALLS AND / OR LOSES POWER IN HOT WEATHER. I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS STALLING EPISODES WITH THIS BIKE. IT WILL STALL AFTER BEING IN STEADY CRUISE FOR 30 MINUTES AT 4000 RPM. IT ALSO STALLS REPEATEDLY IN VERY HOT WEATHER (95-100 DEGREES) AND WILL NOT RESTART(SITTING STATIONARY AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT WHEN TRYING TO START OFF AFTER LIGHT CHANGES). IF IT DOES RESTART IN THESE CONDITIONS, IT DOESN'T RESPOND TO THROTTLE OPENING AND WILL ONLY REV TO 2000-3000 RPM AND WILL BOG DOWN IF THROTTLE IS OPENED FURTHER. I HAVE HAD INSTANCES WHERE THE ENGINE WON'T STAY RUNNING AFTER START( ENGINE STARTS AND RUNS FOR APPROXIMATELY 10-15 SECONDS AND THEN DIES).

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 BWM K1300 GT MOTORCYCLE. THE CONTACTED STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED, HE APPROACHED AN INTERSECTION AND ENGAGED THE CLUTCH. THE VEHICLE THEN STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED NUMEROUS TIMES TO RESTART THE VEHICLE BUT TO NO AVAIL. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE IGNITION COIL WAS REPLACED AT THE CONTACT'S EXPENSE. A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME AFTER THE REPAIR, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO START AGAIN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE THE RIGHT COMBINATION SWITCH AND STARTER RELAY WAS REPLACED AT THE CONTACT'S EXPENSE. THE LEFT COMBINATION SWITCH WAS ALSO REPLACED BECAUSE THE HORN AND HIGH BEAM HEADLIGHTS WERE NOT OPERATIONAL. THE STALLING FAILURE RECURRED AND THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO FAIL TO START. THE DEALER THEN RECOMMENDED THAT THE CONTACT REPLACE THE ENTIRE VEHICLE BUT THE CONTACT DECLINED AND REQUESTED THE DEALER TO REPAIR THE FAILURE. THE DEALER THEN STATED THAT THE REAR FINAL DRIVE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FURTHER REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000.

AFTER HAVING THE RECALL , SHOWN BELOW , COMPLETED BACK IN 2009 THIS SAFETY PROBLEM REOCCURRED ON THIS MOTORCYCLE , IN MY VIEW ALL BMW DID WAS REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE PART WITH ANOTHER DEFECTIVE PART. ALL THE SAME PROBLEMS HAVE REOCCURED WITH THE THREE YEARS OF OWNERSHIP ( DRIVEN LESS THEN 5K) ALMOST CAUSING A CRASH 4 TIMES SINCE THE INSTALL OF THE "NEW" DEFECTIVE PARTS , BOTH SWITCH CLUSTER HAVE HAD FAILURES FROM CONTROL LOSS TO NO STARTING AND STALLING. BMW HAS REFUSED TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE SWITCHES UNLESS I PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENT STATING THAT HAVE BEEN REPLACED BEFORE UNDER THE RECALL. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT CAN CAUSE DEATH WHEN THE SWITCH FAILS CAUSING THE BIKE TO STALL OR LOSS OF CONTROL. THE SAME DEFECTIVE SWITCHES ARE ALSO NOW BEING REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY ON THE NEWER VERSION OF THIS MOTORCYCLE (K1600XX) , BMW STILL HAVE NOT SUPPLIED WORKING SWITCH CLUSTERS THAT WORK. VEHICLE MAKE / MODEL: MODEL YEAR(S): BMW / K1300 GT 2009 BMW / K1300 S 2009 MANUFACTURER: BMW OF NORTH AMERICA, LLC MFR'S REPORT DATE: SEP 29, 2009 NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 09V384000 N/A NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: N/A COMPONENT: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH POTENTIAL NUMBER OF UNITS AFFECTED: SUMMARY: BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009 MOTORCYCLES. THE SWITCHES ON THE HANDLEBARS FOR BOTH THE DIRECTION INDICATOR AND THE EMERGENCY ENGINE OFF/ENGINE-START FUNCTIONS MAY FAIL. CONSEQUENCE: IN SUCH A CASE, THE DIRECTIONAL INDICATOR AND/OR THE EMERGENCY ENGINE-OFF/START FUNCTIONS WOULD BE RENDERED INOPERATIVE. IN SOME CASES, ENGINE STALLING COULD ALSO RESULT INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH. REMEDY: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE THE NECESSARY COMPONENTS FREE OF CHARGE. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT YET PROVIDED AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE. *TR
2009 BMW K1300GT MOTORCYCLE STALLED APPROXIMATELY SIX TIMES DURING A 100 MILE RIDE. THESE INCIDENTS OCCURRED AS I WAS SLOWING AND COMING TO A STOP WITH THE CLUTCH PULLED IN. THE BIKE DID NOT RESTART IMMEDIATELY FOUR OUT OF THE SIX TIMES. THIS IS HIGHLY DANGEROUS, AS LOSING POWER AT ANY TIME ON A MOTORCYCLE MEANS THE POTENTIAL TO LOSE CONTROL. *TR
