The defect: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2014-2017 R1200RT Police motorcycles. While being used in a special operating mode, the brake lights on these motorcycles may not illuminate when the brakes are applied. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
The risk: If the brake light does not illuminate, other drivers may not know that the motorcycle is stopping, increasing the risk of a crash.
The remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will update the motorcycle's software, free of charge. The recall began October 12, 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING

Wire Harness Routing. Models: 2009 - 2013 BMW R 1200 RT-P (Police). Installers may alter the original positioning of the wiring harness cables when routing radio or accessory cable during the up-fitting, or during repairs to the R 1200 RT-P model (example: clutch replacement) resulting in the following symptom: The emergency lights on the top box mounted to the rear of the motorcycle may stay on with the emergency light switch in the off position. Investigation has discovered the cause to be a short in the main wiring harness at the rear of the motorcycle. The location is under the radio box floor plate, by the siren amp mounting plate. The short is caused by the auxiliary battery?s main positive cable and the rear emergency light wiring rubbing and chafing on the ?T? corners of the siren amplifier mounting plate harness securing tab.
