2010 BMW X5 Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2010 BMW X5, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

The contact owns a 2010 BMW X5. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled and was pulled over to the side of the road. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to be repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V707000 (Engine and Engine Cooling); however, after the recall repair was performed, the vehicle failed to start. The contact stated that the recall repair indicated that a diagnostic test was required to determine that an engine failure was a direct result of a fractured VANOS bolt. The contact stated that the dealer declined a diagnostic test or the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 135,000.

My husband and I brought our 2010 X5 (VIN ), mileage: to BMW of El Cajon on 09/29/2025 for a recall service. Before the recall repaire, the vehicale was in normal working condition: -No check engine lights or warning indicators -No unusual noises -Fully drivable on a daily basis After the recall was completed, the dealership informed me that: -multiple check engine/warning lights appeared -The vehicle developed a very loud/high pitch noise -They do not recommend driving the vehicle in its currently condition. They did not warn us about his initial, they did after informed them we do not feel safe driving the car in this condition. The dealership explained this happened because they had open a valve to perform the recall, which they claim disturbed "sludge". They are now refusing to correct the problem unless we pay out of pocket. The issue did not exist before the recall and occurred only as a direct result of the recall repair. The recall left my car unsafe and undriveable, and I am being told to pay for a problem that only arose due to a federally mandated recall work. The recall resulted in a vehicle that is no longer safe to drive, with multiple warning lights and severe engine noise. The dealers refusal to fix this without charing me undermines the purpose of a recall, which is to ensure safety at no cost to the owner. I ask NHTSA to investigate this matter and ensure BMW and its dealerships perform recall repairs properly, at no cost to consumers, and do not return vehicles in unsafe conditions.

Passenger seat occupancy mat failure, seat pad requires replacement at a cost of $2,000 BMW is aware and is tone deaf to this safety defect. IN FEB 2016 DURING DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, LOST POWER STEERING AND BATTERY LIGHT COME ON. CAR WAS TOWED TO THE GARAGE TO DETERMINATE CAUSE AND FIX THE PROBLEM. BOLT THAT HOLD PULLEY TENSIONER WAS BROKEN AND BELT FELL OFF. THERE WAS NO EASY WAY TO REMOVE BRONEK HEAD BOLT OFF FROM ENGINE BLOCK. CAR WAS AT MECHANIC FOR A WEEK, REPLACEMENT BOLT WAS AROUND $6 BUT THE LABOR WAS ALMOST $700.

THE ENGINE BELT IDLER PULLEY BOLT BROKE CAUSING A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER STEERING WHEN THE SERPENTINE BELT CAME OFF THE ALTERNATOR AND POWER STEERING PUMP. THIS IS THE SAME PROBLEM ASSOCIATED WITH RECALL 12V550000 A FEW YEARS AGO. THE DEALER SAID THE VEHICLE WAS FIXED UNDER THE RECALL BUT IT WAS BEFORE I OWNED IT SO I DON'T KNOW FOR SURE. I BELIEVE THE RECALL SHOULD BE REINSTATED. THE VEHICLE WAS MOVING ON A RESIDENTIAL STREET AT LESS THAN 25 MPH AND MY MOM WAS DRIVING. IF SHE HAD BEEN GOING ANY FASTER SHE WOULD HAVE CRASHED.

I own a 2010 BMW X5 xDrive30i (VIN: [XXX] ) with two active recalls: the VANOS bolt recall (23V-707) and the PCV valve heater recall (22V-119). Despite these being federally mandated safety repairs, Sharpe BMW in Grand Rapids, MI refused to perform the work without a paid diagnostic and potential full repair payment upfront, stating reimbursement would be decided afterward. I was sent home in an unsafe, recalled vehicle that visibly and audibly shakes at startup and frequently stalls. Other engine components have now failed due to the VANOS issue and the vehicle is now inoperable. BMW NA has acknowledged contact, but has only redirected me back to the same dealer without offering resolution. This has created financial hardship and an ongoing safety concern. Headlight wiring loom insulation on both passenger and driver sides degrading heavily to the point of disintegration on touch. My driver side headlights have stopped working despite best attempts at isolating wires. I have received multiple headlight(low/DRL) warnings and errors because of this issue. It has been verified by countless independent mechanics and hobbyists on this generation of car with no aftermarket or OE solutions. I have since almost collided with objects in the road while driving at night due to this faulty manufacturing. I also fear for an electrical fire which is bound to happen due to exposed wiring. This has been happening for a few months with no improvement and further degradation. I have not had it inspected by BMW.

MAY 10, 2017 WE PURCHASED A 2010 BMW X5 WITH APPROX 70KMILES FROM EAST PROVIDENCE AUTO FOR $16,000. TWO DAYS LATER WE BROUGHT THE VEHICLE BACK BECAUSE THE WINDSHIELD WIPER FLUID LEAKED ONTO THE DRIVER SIDE FLOOR, THE SUNROOF WOULDN'T CLOSE AND A BURNING OIL SMELL WAS COMING FROM THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. AFTER INSPECTING, THE MECHANIC SAID THE HOSE FROM THE WINDSHIELD WIPER TANK WAS NEEDED REPLACEMENT, HE UNJAMMED THE SUNROOF AND ADDED 2 QUARTS OF OIL; HOWEVER, HE COULDN'T FIX ANYTHING. MAY 22 WE RETURNED B/C THE OIL LIGHT WAS ON AND THE BURNING OIL SMELL STILL EXISTED. BUT THE GARAGE WAS LOCKED. THE SALESMAN SAID WE WOULD HAVE TO COME BACK. MAY 24 WE RETURNED AFTER BLUE SMOKE WAS COMING FROM THE EXHAUST. THE MECHANIC SAID THE OWNER WAS IN PORTUGAL FOR TWO WEEKS AND HE COULDN'T WORK ON THE VEHICLE WITHOUT PERMISSION. AFTER RETURNING AND CALLING MANY TIMES OVER THE NEXT MONTH WE MET WITH THE OWNER WHO SAID HIS MECHANIC LEFT, WE WOULD HAVE TO WAIT. JULY 3 WE HAD THE VEHICLE INDEPENDENTLY INSPECTED (SEE ATTACHED REPORT). HE INSPECTED THE ENGINE AND DRAINED THE OIL. HE RECOMMENDED THE ENGINE BE REMOVED FOR FURTHER DIAGNOSIS AND IF NOT RESOLVED THE ENGINE WILL EVENTUALLY NEED TO BE REPLACED. AFTER RETURNING TO EP AUTO THE OWNER SAID THE 30 DAY WARRANTY WAS UP SO WE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE RHODE ISLAND DEALERS LICENSE AND REGULATIONS OFFICE (COMPLAINT NUMBER AM-1702213). WE ARE AWAITING A RESPONSE FROM THE HEARING BOARD. THE CASE MANAGER ADVISED THAT IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO FORCE EP AUTO TO TAKE THE VEHICLE BACK BECAUSE WE HAVE TO PROVE THE ISSUES ARE PRE-EXISTING AND SHE IS ANTICIPATING THE HEARING BOARD WILL NOT RULE IN OUR FAVOR. AT THIS POINT WE ARE EXTREMELY RELUCTANT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE DUE TO THE SAFETY CONCERNS. I RECENTLY RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FROM YOU ALLEGING DEFECTIVE AIRBAGS MADE BY TAKATA.
