2014 Buick Verano Engine Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the engine system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Engine reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Vehicle hesitating when attempting to accelerate. No power or minimal momentum when pressing on gas pedal. Transmission control module would randomly drop out and loose communication at the same time the body control module thought the vehicle was in park. It would lock and unlock the doors multiple times and the car would jerk uncontrollably. Extremely unsafe while mobile. Issue first occurred randomly summer of 2023 and has progressively gotten worse. Now it occurs at least once every 2 weeks.

Car keeps stalling and the service power steering warning comes on the dash as well as the service air bag. Then the car speed drops to around 20 mph and won’t go any faster and then when you stop at a stop sign or something the car acts like it doesn’t want to go

I have included here copies of correspondence between myself and General Motors relating to an issue with my 2014 Buick Verano. As stated in the emails, after some online research, I found that there was actually a class action lawsuit pending in the court with regard to the issue I was having. I did reach out to the attorneys office handling the class action suit and received an auto-reply that they received my message, but nothing further. What I find very disturbing is that in one google search, I found multiple articles and forums as well as two class action lawsuits that address the very issue of excessive oil consumption and General Motors has not done anything to address this issue with vehicle owners. At the very least, a TSB should have been issued to make owners aware of this issue so they could address it properly. There continues to be many posts by people still experiencing this problem which is unacceptable. The issue has caused unnecessary wear and tear on my car and many costly repairs. My car continues to have issues that may have been caused by the initial PVC problem.

Newly purchased delivery of 2014 Buick Verano. from Auto Deal Makers in Chantilly, Va. Not even 5 miles driven, car was hesitant at 20mph, felt like it was going to stall out at 40mph, my left upper lip started tingling, my kids felt sick as we all experienced a heavy taste & smell of burnt oil in the cabin of the car. Two hours later my kids & I still could not get the taste of burnt oil off our tongues and back of our throats even after eating. Contacted GM & Chevy although they are fully aware of the defect they refuse to accept responsibility. The tingling has now reached my chin as though my children and I have been affected by some form of toxic chemical poisoning. This was the first time I ever drove my newly purchased vehicle, and have been poisoned myself & my kids by the toxic fumes the car is emitting. Total recalls should be done, and full compensation to consumers. GM & Chevy are fully aware of the defects and should be held responsible and accountable for the dangerously hazardous fumes that they are knowingly allowing unsuspecting consumers to become victims of their neglect and found guilty of all laws created to protect consumers, and the environment for these defective vehicles and found guilty pursuant to any and all Lemon Laws pertaining to aforementioned toxic chemical exposure. All of these makes/models that have similar issues should be recalled immediately for the safety and health of the consumers, and the environment.

My 2014 Buick Verano, that I have owned for several years now, is consuming oil at an alarming rate. The problem is that the manufacturer put a PCV valve into the engines intake manifold that gets clogged and produces too much pressure. With the pressure being so high, it forces oil into the air intake breather box and up through the throttle body and gets burnt off. If the oil pressure gets too high, the additional risk is that the rear main seal may get blown. Because of this, I have to continuously check for proper engine oil level, and even while doing that often (weekly), there are times that I find the car needing more than 2 quarts of oil to be put into the engine regardless of how long it has been between oil changes. Additionally, there has never been an oil light or any indicator light showing any trouble at all. GM knows there are problems with these 2.4l engines because they sent letters to some owners of 2012 GMC Terrains with the same problems. As there are still many Buick Veranos and other vehicles on the road sharing the same engine, I believe that GM should still be held responsible for repairing a known problem. I have not taken this to the dealer for this problem, as I have read many other accounts of people being charged diagnosis fees with $5000 plus repair bills for this issue.

The car stalls in traffic and the air conditioning will stop working and remote start doesn't work although I have paid for it to be fixed. You can just be driving along the car will stop and not start. It has stalled 6 times in mid traffic putting my life and my children's life in danger we almost was hit by other cars on the highway because the car stopped suddenly. I had the car towed to the Shortline Buick GMC 1301 S Havana St. Aurora, CO. 80012 because of this and they charged me $1000 and only change filters did not fix the car or the remote start. This on or around October 13, 2020.

OIL AND FILTER WAS CHANGED ABOUT A MONTH AND A HALF AGO. AGAIN, NO LOW OIL PRESSURE, ENGINE SERVICE LIGHT, ETC. NO WARNING JUST STOPPED RUNNING. WAS ON A RURAL ROAD, HAD THIS HAPPENED ON THE INTERSTATE OR HIGHWAY IT WOULD HAVE BEEN HORRIBLE. THE MECHANIC SAYS THE ENGINE HAS LOST COMPRESSION AND RECOMMENDS A NEW MOTOR. MY WIFE AND I WERE TRAVELLING SOUTH ON I-95 IN PHILADELPHIA IN OUR 2014 VERANO T W/KEYLESS IGNITION. I WAS DRIVING, AND REACHED UP WITH MY RIGHT HAND TO ADJUST THE CENTER LEFT VENT. AFTER ADJUSTING THE VENT, I NOTICED THAT THE A/C HAD TURNED OFF, AND THAT THE TACHOMETER HAD FALLEN TO ZERO. I THEN REALIZED THAT I MUST HAVE BRUSHED AGAINST THE START/OFF BUTTON (LOCATED NEXT TO THE VENT) AND INADVERTENTLY TURNED THE ENGINE OFF.MY WIFE (WHO DRIVES THE CAR MORE THAN MYSELF) HAD PREVIOUSLY RELATED TO ME THAT SHE HAD ACCIDENTALLY SHUT THE CAR OFF TWICE BEFORE ON NEIGHBORHOOD STREETS, SO I QUICKLY ASKED HER HOW SHE HAD MANAGED TO START THE CAR AGAIN. SHE SAID THAT SHE HAD TO PULL OVER, PUT IT IN PARK, AND PUSH THE START BUTTON. WELL, SINCE WE WERE DOING ABOUT 60 ON I-95 IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND IN AN AREA WITHOUT SHOULDERS ON EITHER SIDE, THIS WAS GOING TO BE NO MEAN TRICK AND POSSIBLY SUICIDAL. I TRIED TO START THE CAR BY PUTTING IT INTO NEUTRAL AND PRESSING THE START BUTTON, BUT THIS ONLY RESULTED IN THE GAUGE NEEDLES SWEEPING FROM LEFT TO RIGHT AND THE CAR DID NOT RESTART. WITH NO VIABLE ALTERNATIVE, I PUT THE FLASHERS ON AND MANAGED TO MANEUVER THROUGH THE TRAFFIC TO THE FAR RIGHT LANE.SAYING A PRAYER, I THEN BROUGHT THE CAR TO A STOP IN THE SPEEDING TRAFFIC, PUT IT IN PARK, AND RESTARTED IT. IT WAS TRULY A MIRACLE THAT WE WEREN'T REAR-ENDED DURING THIS ORDEAL. WHEN OUR BREATHING HAD RETURNED TO NORMAL, I ASKED MY WIFE TO CHECK THE OWNER'S MANUAL (WHICH I HAD READ) FOR ANY PROCEDURE TO RESTART THE CAR UNDER THE CIRCUMSTANCES THAT WE HAD JUST EXPERIENCED AND SHE REPORTED THAT THERE WAS NONE.BETWEEN THE TWO OF US WE HAVE 92 YEARS OF DRIVING EXPERIENCE AND I CONSIDER MYSELF AN ENTHUSIAST. OUR OPINION IS THAT THE START/OFF BUTTON IS IN A BAD PLACE, UNPROTECTED, TOO SENSITIVE, AND THAT TOUCHING IT ACCIDENTALLY CAUSES UNWANTED ENGINE SHUT DOWN WITH INADEQUATE WARNING TO THE DRIVER.

WHILE DRIVING AT APPROX 70 MPH MY KNEE BUMPED THE KEY/IGNITION AND THE CAR TURNED OFF. I BELIEVE THE KEY ACTUALLY TURNED IN THE IGNITION. THIS APPEARS TO BE THE RESULT OF THE COMBINATION OF THE LOCATION OF THE IGNITION SWITCH, THE DESIGN OF THE KEY FOB AND THE KEY CHAIN AND TAG THAT THE RENTAL CAR COMPANY USES. I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE IN MODERATELY HEAVY TRAFFIC. I HAD THE CRUISE CONTROL ENGAGED SO MY FOOT WAS NOT PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR. I HAD THE SOLE OF MY SHOE FLAT ON THE FLOOR AND MY KNEE BENT. I WAS APPROXIMATELY 3 HOURS INTO A LONG TRIP AND IDLY SHIFTED MY POSITION. SOMEHOW THE KEY CHAIN, FOB, 2ND KEY AND TAG HAD ALIGNED IN SUCH A WAY THAT MY KNEE WAS ABLE TO BUMP THEM AND APPLY ROTATIONAL LEVERAGE IN SUCH A WAY AS TO TURN THE KEY FROM ON TO OFF. FORTUNATELY, I WAS IN THE LEFT LANE ON A RELATIVELY FLAT/STRAIGHT SECTION OF INTERSTATE AND THERE WAS A WIDE PAVED SHOULDER. I PUT ON MY FLASHERS, MOVED ONTO THE SHOULDER AND WAS ABLE TO STEER AND BRAKE WELL ENOUGH TO STOP THE CAR SAFELY. I WAS THEN ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR AND CONTINUE. I HAVE PICTURES AVAILABLE OF THE KEY FOB/CHAIN ARRANGEMENT. *TR

THIS IS MY SECOND COMPLAINT. MY WIFE FORGOT TO PRESS THE STOP ENGINE BUTTON AGAIN BECAUSE OF A DISTRACTION. AS A RESULT SHE BURNED A QUARTER TANK OF GAS WHILE SHE WAS GONE FROM THE VEHICLE. WHY IS THERE NOT A SAFETY SHUT OFF LIKE THE TEN MINUTE SHUT OFF IN REMOTE START MODE? IF THIS WAS IN MY INTEGRAL GARAGE I COULD BE DEAD FROM CARBON MONOXIDE. IS THIS ANOTHER SHOVE IT UNDER THE RUG LIKE THE GM KEY SCANDAL. SINCE SO MANY VEHICLES ARE GOING TO THIS TECHNOLOGY WHY HASN'T THIS BEEN LOOKED AT? MY WIFE IS ONLY 61 AND IN GOOD HEALTH. WHAT OF THE OLDER FOLKS WITH PROBLEMS TO DO? *TR
