1991 Chevrolet Camaro Engine Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the engine system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Engine reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

5.0LITER TBI VEHICLE STALLED IN TRAFFIC AT IDLE ONLY. I RESTARTED AND WAS ABLE TO EXIT FREEWAY. IDLE IS GOOD IN PARK OR NEUTRAL GEAR, IDLE IS UNSTEADY WHILE IN GEAR AND STALL OCCURS WITHIN SECONDS. HI SPEED OPERATION WAS GOOD.AFTER INVESTIGATING POSSIBLE CAUSES, I DETERMINED MAIN CAUSE TO BE A RUSTED DISTRIBUTOR MAGNETIC ROTOR ASSY. ITS SPINNING VANES HAD RUSTED,THROWING OFF BIG RUSTY CHUNKS OF METAL UNDER DIST. CAP. IN THAT CONDITION, COMPUTER COULD NOT KEEP ACCURATE SENSE OF CRANKSHAFT POSITION. I AM AMAZED IT WOULD RUN AT ALL UPON DISCOVERY OF FAILURE. DISTRIBUTOR TO BE REPLACED . *TR

THIS PROBLEM WAS COVERED UNDER A RECALL BUT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT COVERED EVEN THOUGH IT HAS THE EXACT SAME PROBLEMS THE RECALL DESCRIBES. I HAVE HEARD FROM QUITE A FEW PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD THIS SAME COMPLAINT OF NOT BEING COVERED. AND YES I HAVE TOLD THEM TO COME HERE TO ENTER THE INFORMATION. THE FUMES CAN ALMOST OVERCOME YOU AT TIMES BUT AT TIMES ARE HARDLY NOTICEABLE BUT I BELIEVE IT DEFINITELY NEEDS TO BE CORRECTED ANYWAY. IF SOME VEHICLES ARE COVERED AND SOME AREN'T BUT SOME HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WOULDN'T THAT BE REASON ENOUGH TO EXPAND THE RECALL. I HOPE SO. ALL HELP ON THIS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED AND I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO VOICE MY OPINION AND SUBMIT THIS INFORMATION. THANKS AGAIN.
