2010 Chevrolet Camaro Engine Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the engine system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Engine reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

The engine timing is wrong. The camshaft and the reluctor misalign and cause the engine to loose performance. The problem was diagnosed by a Chevrolet dealership because of the illuminated "check engine" light. This seems to be a major historical issue with these type engines produced by Chevrolet. The engine was replaced.

The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. The contact stated that while sitting in the vehicle with the engine running, a hospital security guard asked her to turn off the vehicle because exhaust fumes were entering the building. The vehicle was driven to an independent mechanic and was diagnosed as a pressurized gas line leak failure. The contact was informed that the fuel tank needed to be removed to confirm the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure was like NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V837000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) however, neither the VIN nor the model year was included. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

My 2010 camaro has the 3.6 v6 engine in it. I had no warning lights or issues with the car. I got in my car and started to drive on a highway the engine exploded on me and I swerved out of control luckily being able to stop the car on the right side of the road. I had the car towed to my house where it sat for months unable to be driven. I have been doing more and more research trying to figure out why it blew up. Me and my passenger could have died that day with how badly the force of the engine through the car out of control. And the chunks of steel that flew from under my car almost killed 2 kids in a car behind me. And upon talking to an associate who is a gm certified mechanic but he doesn't work for a dealership his diagnosis was the timing chain went bad prematurely and snapped and set off a chain reaction making the motor explode. During my time researching I have discovered this issue is already known by general motors for this engine having premature timing chain wear down. I have pictures of other 2010 camaro owners complaints of this issue. I also am aware gm has faced several class action law suits due to this issue. They put a recall out on the engine but specific vin numbers. So when I called gm customer service asking why I can't get my car repaired and my engine replaced they told me it was due to not being a vin number they included in the recalls even though they are aware it is the same engine. The recall should be for all vin numbers for this engine. My safety as well as others safety was put at risk for a known defect. This issue could happen to anyone with this engine and people could be killed due to it and those that survive the situation when it arises get left without a working vehicle. Now my car sits in my driveway without an engine. There should be a mass recall for all the engines. My name is Kenneth Brown 'Kenny', and I purchased my 2010 Chevy Camaro 1LT 3.6L V6 from Ron Tonkin Chevrolet here in Portland, Oregon right off of their lot brand new. Now on the the bigger issue that has never been addressed to this day...the faulty 3.6L V6 motor. If you were to look at the wrecking yards across the country, you will find many 2010 & some early 2011 Camaro's with dead motors well before 75k miles, because my motor went out at 69K miles in 2017. McLaughlin Chevrolet the Dealership that replaced my motor stated that "They don't replace motors with only 69k miles on them", but they did, and that wouldn't be the last motor replacement they would do on the same car! Two weeks before the warranty expired on the replacement motor in September 2020 with 102,233 miles, McLaughlin Chevrolet replaced the GM vendor replacement motor with what is currently in my car. So is it normal to have had (3) OEM GM motors in one car with just 102k miles? There is a more serious/dangerous underlining issue here that GM, or anyone will acknowledge, and that is, just before the two previous motors went out, there was this engine warning light that has popped up each time, and that was the "Engine Power is Reduced". And where the safety concern lies is when this engine warning light comes on, it reduces your engine power almost down to a complete stop. How wonderful it is when your in heave traffic doing 45mph to 50mph and you loose engine power in heavy traffic! Now GM has attributed the engine warning light to a Timing belt issue, and this has been an issue since 2010. When this warning light comes on, not only is the engine power reduced, the bigger issue is that the power steering is reduced drastically. If you are not a seasoned driver that has driven a vehicle that has no power steering in it, then it becomes a serious issue...RIGHT, especially when your in heave traffic doing 45 to 50mph, because it put me right into the retaining cement barrier on the highway

My 2010 Chevy Camaro has a check engine light for a code P0008 which is an engine preformace bank 1 code. It is affecting my acceleration. I have noticed with other General Motors vehicles that have the 3.6L V6 have thrown this code for a timing chain issue around 100,000 miles and I belive other makes and models have been recalled for this issue and was concerned that it could be unsafe. I also wanted to know why this has not already been recalled on this make and model but has on others. If you could look in to this that would be great. Thank you

THE 2010 CAMARO WITH THE 3.6L LLT MODEL ENGINE HAS PREMATURE TIMING CHAIN ISSUES. THESE CHAINS ARE STRETCHING OUT AND CAUSING PERFORMANCE ISSUES AND CAUSING ENGINE FAILURE. MY VEHICLE GAVE ME A DECREASED ENGINE POWER WARNING WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND DECREASED MY SPEED DRAMATICALLY. I HAD TO FLOOR THE GAS PEDDLE TO KEEP IT ABOVE 40 MPH IN A 65 MPH SPEED LIMIT. IT WAS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. I HAD THE ENGINE LIGHT DIAGNOSED AND WAS TOLD IT WAS A WORN TIMING CHAIN AND THAT 2 CAMSHAFTS WERE NOW OUT OF ALIGNMENT. GM HAS RECALLED ALMOST ALL OTHER VEHICLES WITH THE SAME ENGINE AND TIMING CHAIN FOR THIS ISSUE. THEY HAVE ALSO DISCONTINUED USE OFF THE CHAIN ITSELF AND SELL A DIFFERENT MODEL FOR REPLACEMENT. BUT THEY REFUSE TO RECALL THE 2010 CAMARO FOR THIS ISSUE SO THE ONLY OPTION IS TO REPLACE THEIR DEFECTIVE PRODUCT WITH THE NEWER ONE OUT OF POCKET.

I HAVE THE 2010 CAMARO V6, WITH ONLY 67,700 MILES. LIKE TOO MANY OTHERS, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND IT GAVE A P0008 ERROR CODE FOR PREMATURE TIMING CHAIN WEAR. WHY HASN'T GM ISSUED A RECALL FOR THE CAMARO WITH THIS ENGINE WHEN THEY'VE ISSUED A RECALL FOR NEARLY ALL OTHER VEHICLES WITH THIS ENGINE?!? I SHOULD NOT BE FACING AN ESTIMATE OF OVER $2,000 TO REPLACE THE TIMING CHAIN WITH ONLY 67,200 MILES!

EARLIER IN 2018, THE CAR WAS INTERMITTENTLY THROWING A P008 CODE AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WITH NO NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE IN THE MILEAGE OR RUNNING. IT WOULD COME ON, THEN GO OFF FOR WEEKS. OIL WAS CHANGED EVERY 3-5000 MILES. NOW THE LIGHT IS ON AND WILL NOT GO OFF, SHOWING ONLY THE SAME CODE OF P008. I CAN NOT PASS YEARLY STATE EMISSION INSPECTIONS WITH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON. THE LOCAL GM SHOP INDICATED THAT THE CODE MEANS THAT I NEED A NEW TIMING CHAIN. I HAVE THE 3.6 LITER MOTOR WITH 92000 MILES. FOR OTHER GM MODELS WITH THIS ISSUE AND THE 3.6 L MOTOR, GM EXTENDED THEIR WARRANTY AND COVERED THE COST OF REPLACING THE TIMING BELT, BUT THEY EXCLUDED THE CAMARO. I HAVE RECEIVED ESTIMATED COSTS OF 1200 TO 2100 TO REPLACE THE TIMING CHAIN. THIS COST IS MORE MONEY THAN I HAVE, BUT I MAY NOT HAVE A CHOICE. I DO NOT WANT TO BE ON THE ROAD WHEN THE TIMING CHAIN BREAKS AND I AM IN THE MIDDLE OF INTERSTATE TRAFFIC.

THE GM 6.2L LS ENGINE HAS A SERIOUS DEFECT WITH THE VALVE TRAIN THAT CAUSES THE ENGINE TO DROP VALVES INTO THE CYLINDER, AND LOCK UP THE ENGINE WHILE DRIVING. THE FUEL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM THAT MAKES THE ENGINE OPERATE ON LESS CYLINDERS WHILE AT CRUISING SPEEDS, CAUSES THE LIFTERS TO STICK. THIS RESULTS IN EXCESSIVE CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE VALVE AND ROCKER ARM, AND THE BEATING ACTION KNOCKS THE KEEPERS OUT. WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THE VALVE DROPS INTO THE CYLINDER, AND THE ENGINE LOCKS UP. THIS PRIMARILY HAPPENS WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, WHICH RESULTS IN LOSS OF STEERING, LOSS OF BRAKES, AND IN CASES LIKE MINE WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION, WHEN THE ENGINE LOCKS UP, THE REAR WHEELS ALSO LOCK UP, AND THE VEHICLE SLIDES OUT OF CONTROL. THIS HAPPENED, IT WAS RAINING, ON A STRAIGHT STRETCH OF DIVIDED 4 LANE, AT 55MPH, WHICH CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO SLIDE OFF THE ROAD, AND ONLY BECAUSE IT WAS ON A SATURDAY MORNING AND THERE WAS VERY LIMITED TRAFFIC, WE WERE NOT INJURED OR KILLED. I SPECIAL ORDERED THIS VEHICLE FROM GM, IT WAS SERVICED ONLY AT THE DEALERSHIP IT WAS PURCHASED, AND WAS TREATED WITH EXTREME CARE FROM DAY ONE. BEING THAT THE WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED, THE DEALERSHIP MADE AN ESTIMATE THAT IT WILL TAKE $8,200 TO REPLACE THE ENGINE, AND IT ONLY HAD 51,000 MILES AT THE TIME. AFTER THIS HAPPENED TO MINE, I HAVE FOUND THAT THIS SITUATION IS A VERY COMMON OCCURRENCE WITH THE 6.2L LS ENGINES. GM HAS DONE NOTHING BUT TURN THEIR BACKS TO MILLIONS OF CUSTOMERS WHO ARE DRIVING A VEHICLE THAT CAN LOSE STEERING, BRAKES, AND CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, AT ANYTIME WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS OF 60+MPH. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE TO NOT JUST THE PEOPLE DRIVING THESE VEHICLES, BUT ANYONE WHO IS DRIVING NEAR ONE OF THESE VEHICLES WHEN THIS OCCURS. GM NEEDS TO BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE SAFETY OF THEIR CUSTOMERS, AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC.

2010 CHEVROLET CAMARO V6 PREMATURE TIMING CHAIN REPLACEMENT. AFTER A DIAGNOSTIC TESTING FROM SANDY SANSING CHEVROLET IN PENSACOLA, FL, I WAS NOTIFIED THE THE ERROR CODE P0008 NEEDING REPLACEMENT OF A NEW TIMING CHAIN KIT. MY CAMARO ONLY HAD 97,000 MILES AND I WAS OCD ON MY OIL CHANGES AND MAINTENANCE. I FILED A CASE WITH GM AND MY CASE WAS DENIED. A SIMPLE SEARCH ONLINE OF 2010 CHEVY CAMARO TIMING CHAIN RESULTS IN AN EXTREME AMOUNT OF COMPLAINTS WITH THE 2010 CHEVY CAMARO HAVING THE WORST PROBLEMS COMPARED TO OTHER CHEVROLET PRODUCTS, WITH THE #1 PROBLEM RESULTING IN COMPLAINTS OF THE PREMATURE TIMING CHAIN WEAR. GM VEHICLES INCLUDING THE BUICK ENCLAVE, CHEVROLET TRAVERSE, GMC ACADIA, AND SATURN OUTLOOK OBTAINING THE GM 3.6 LITER V6 LLT ENGINE WAS ISSUED A BULLETIN ON 02/09/2011 TO ALL GM DEALERS MARKED URGENT- DISTRIBUTE IMMEDIATELY. SUBJECT PREMATURE TIMING CHAIN WEAR- PROGRAM. GM ANNOUNCES KNOWLEDGE OF FAULTY TIMING CHAINS, HOWEVER REFUSING TO INCLUDE THE 2010 CAMARO V6 3.6 LITER LLT ENGINE. ACCORDING TO MASTER MECHANICS SEARCH ONLINE REGARDING THIS ENGINE... TIMING CHAINS ARE DESIGNED TO OPERATE AT TWICE THE MAX ENGINE OIL TEMP AND AT 2X THE EXPECTED ENGINE LIFE. 97,000 MILES IS NOT AN EXPECTED ENGINE LIFE. THE MERE FAXT THAT THESE ENGINES STARTED SEEING CHAIN FAILURES IN SOME CASES UNDER 10,000 MILES PROVES DEFINITIVELY THAT THERE WAS AT THE VERY LEAST A QUALITY DEFECT WITH THE TIMING CHAINS IN THESE ENGINES . GM REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE OR ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY OF THEIR DEFECT PUSHING THE COST OF MYSELF AND OTHER CONSUMERS. I HAVE ALSO FILED A CASE WITH THIS INFORMATION TO MY ATTORNEY GENERAL OFFICE. GM IGNORED SEVERAL REQUESTS FOR DOCUMENTATION THAT THEY ARE DENYING RESPONSIBILITY FOR MY TIMING CHAIN ISSUES. GM NEEDS TO REIMBURSE CUSTOMERS WHO HAD TO PAY FOR THIS DEFECT IN THEIR LACK TO RESPOND TO CUSTOMERS COMPLAINTS.
