2007 Chevrolet Cobalt Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Reports by component

Ranked by how many owner reports name each component category

Percentages are of component mentions. A single complaint can name more than one component, so these do not sum to the total complaint count.

I observed my mother’s 2007 Chevy Cobalt was leaking fuel near the rear tire by the fuel tank. I inspected the tank with engine off and it does not leak. Only with engine running. I lowered the tank and observed a small crack on the plastic return line on the fuel pump module. I started looking online and could not find a replacement part that was plastic. I then conducted more research and found the recall. I asked my mother and she stated she never received a recall. The recall was issued on 09-19-12. NHSTA ID#12v459000

I was in a crash on 9/19/25 and at the incident none of my airbags deployed. My daily driver for my children and I. I was lucky I was the only passenger at the time. I never expected my airbags not to deploy in a head on crash. The car still sits in my driveway and I have and identical one just like it that I drive! I’d like them evaluated.

I purchased a 2007 Chevy cobalt and was told by an independent shop that their computer was reading codes for the ignition switch and the air bag lights are on. On top of it the power steering feels like it goes in and out. I know there’s recalls on the 2007 Chevy cobalts for the exact reasoning. Faulty ignition switch and the airbags not deploying because of it. Along with like 4 other recalls GM announced. I just purchased the car not even two weeks ago so I was told to come on here and file a complaint to see if I can get the recall letter so the dealership can fix the car.

THE AUTOMATIC HEADLIGHTS ON THE CAR DO SHUT OFF INTERMITTENTLY. THEY ALSO TURN ON BY THEMSELVES SOMETIMES WHEN THE CAR IS PARKED AND OFF. WE HAVE BEEN STRANDED WITH A DEAD BATTERY WHEN THIS HAPPENS. THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE 2007 AND NEWER COBALTS. TYPICALLY CARS HAD A PHYSICAL RELAY TO CONTROL THE HEADLIGHTS. IN THESE CARS THE RELAY CIRCUIT IS BUILT IN THE UNDERSIDE OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT FUSE BOX. THE BOX IS NOT SEAL PROPERLY AND MOISTURE GETS INTO THE BOX, CAUSING A FAILURE ON THE CIRCUIT BOARD. THIS CAR FIRST STARTED DOING THIS BACK IN 2009 WHEN MY DAUGHTER HAD IT. I RECENTLY TOOK THE CAR BACK AND IT WAS STILL BEHAVING IN THIS MANNER. THE WORK AROUND THAT SEEMED TO WORK FOR A LONG TIME WAS TO MANUALLY TURN THE AUTO LIGHTS OFF USING THE MULTIFUNCTION LEVER ON THE STEERING WHEEL. TODAY, THE LIGHTS STARTED COMING ON BY THEMSELVES WHEN THE CAR WAS PARKED. ALSO, TURNING THE AUTO LIGHTS OFF MANUALLY HAS STOPPED BEING EFFECTIVE. WE ARE NOW FEARFUL, WILL THE LIGHTS SHUT OFF WHILE WE ARE DRIVING, AND OFF COURSE WILL WE BE STRANDED WITH A DEAD BATTERY WHEN PARKING THE CAR. THE SOLUTION SEEMS TO BE TO REPLACE THE FUSE BOX IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT A $200 PART PLUS A FEW LABOR HOURS. THEN YOU HAVE TO RIG UP A SOLUTION TO MAKE THE DEFECTIVE BOX SEAL, SUCH AS ADDING WEATHERSTRIPPING. I FEEL THIS SHOULD BE A SAFETY RECALL FOR GM TO FIX AT NO COST TO CUSTOMER. I PURCHASED A 2007 CHEVROLET COBALT IN 2006 , THEY SOLD ME THE VEHICLE THAT THEY USED FOR TEST DRIVING, WHICH I TOLD THEM WAS OUT OF LINE AND THEY STILL MADE ME PURCHASE IT. I BOUGHT IT BACK A WEEK LATER AND THEY HAD TO LINE IT UP BECAUSE IT WAS ALL OVER THE ROAD. A MONTH LATER, THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD NOT TURN, THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TOLD ME I HAD TO PAY $1200.00 TO GET IT FIXED UNTIL I NOTIFIED THE DISTRICT MANAGER AND HE MADE THEM FIX IT.THEN THE SECURITY AIR BAG LIGHT STAYED ON AND IT WOULD NOT PASS INSPECTION AND THEY TRIED TO MAKE ME PAY FOR THAT. I HAVE BEEN SPENDING MONEY ON TIRES ALL THE TIME, SPEND MONEY ON BRAKES ALL THE TIME, HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE ELECTRICAL UNITS TO THE RADIO KEEPS GOING OUT, BEARINGS IN THE WHEEL IS GONE, AND IT KEEPS CUTTING OFF. I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS SINCE I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE. I GOT A LETTER FOR THE RECALL FOR THE POWER STEERING AND WHEN I GOT MY CAR BACK, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYS ON, THEY MESSED UP MY BOOT AND NOW TELLING ME I NEED TO FIX IT WHEN THEY HAD SOMEONE TO DRIVE MY CAR FOR 12 MILES. NOW ALL I GET IS A LOT OF DISRESPECT FROMTHEM AND THEY DON'T WANT TO REPAIR WHAT THEY MESSED UP. I ALSO WANTED TO PURCHASE ANOTHER CAR LAST MONTH FOR MY SON WHO GRADUATED FROM COLLEGE AND I HAD TO LOOK THROUGH THE WINDOWS TO SEE VEHICLES INSTEAD OF THE SALESMAN OPENING THE DOOR AND LETTING ME LOOK IN THE INSIDE. MIND YOU I BOUGHT A 16,000.00 CAR FROM THEY AND THAT'S HOW THEY APPRECIATE MY BUSINESS. I AM HEART BROKEN BECAUSE I FEEL AS IF I WAS ROBBED OF MY MONEY. I SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN GIVEN A CAR THAT THEY USE FOR TEST DRIVING. ALSO THE SECURITY AIRBAG LIGHT WOULD NOT GO OFF AND THEY WOULD NOT LET IT PASS INSPECTION. *TR

ALL FOUR DOORS ON THE CAR ARE LIKE THAT. SECOND, THE DRIVER DOOR HANDLE HAS ALREADY BEEN REPLACED ONCE DUE TO FAILURE TO OPERATE OPENING THE DOOR AS IF IT IS STUCK OR SOMETHING.
