2009 Chevrolet Cobalt Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

My car turned off while I was driving and almost caused me to crash into an 18 wheeler. Thank God I turned on my emergency signal and the truck swerved!. I would of died. I was stuck in the middle of the road and luckily some passersby helped me push it into a commercial parking area. I tried to start it again and it wouldn't start. But, when I turn my key into the off position, my car tried starting by itself. It was scary. It was checked by a mechanic, prior to this happening, because the car was hard to start. The mechanic told me to find out if there is a recall. However, I did some research and there was a recall on the ignition switch and fuel pump. The ignition switch was faulty causing the car to turn off while moving and two people died as a result. I entered the VIN # and it didn't show any recalls.

THE MORNING AFTER COMING BACK FROM A TRIP I WENT DOWN TO GET IN MY COLBALT AND FOUND MY LEFT FRONT TIRE FLAT. I GOT MY MANUAL OUT TO READ HOW TO CHANGE THE TIRE AND CHANGED IT. WE NOTICED THE SIZE DIFFERENCE IN THE TIRES RIGHT AWAY, REGULAR TIRE IS P205/55R16 H, THE SPARE IS A T115/70D15 M. THESE ARE THE ORIGINAL TIRES THAT CHEVROLET PUT ON THE CAR. THE MANUAL SAID WE COULD GO NORMAL SPEED. I DROVE A BLOCK TO GET THE TIRE FIXED AND TURNED AROUND AND WENT BACK HOME. THE CAR DIPPED HORRIBLE AND DRAGGED WHEN I PULLED BACK INTO MY DRIVE WAY. IT ALSO MADE RUBBING SOUNDS. IT DID NOT FILL SAFE TO DRIVE. WE TOOK THE TIRE IN AND HAD IT FIXED WITHOUT THE CAR, BROUGHT IT HOME AND PUT IT BACK ON CAR. I HAVE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH CHEVROLET SINCE THEN TO SEE IF IT WAS AN ERROR ON THE SPARE. THEY HAVE TOLD ME THAT IT IS THE RIGHT SPARE, ALTHOUGH A COUPLE OF THE PEOPLE THAT I HAVE TALKED TO THOUGHT IT WAS BAD TO HAVE A 15 INCH SPARE WITH 16 INCH TIRES. THEY ALSO TOLD ME THAT WHAT I NEED TO DO IS IF THE FLAT IS ON THE FRONT I'M SUPPOSE TO CHANGE TWO TIRES. THEY TOLD ME TO PUT A BACK TIRE ON THE FRONT AND THE SPARE ON THE BACK, WHICH IS NOT THE DIRECTION IN THE MANUAL. THEY TOLD ME I CAN GO 50 MPH AND GET THE TIRE FIXED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. SO NOW OUT ON A BUSY HIGHWAY THEY WANT ME TO CHANGE TWO TIRES AND HAVE THE BACK OF MY CAR DIP HORRIBLY. I FEEL THIS SPARE IS UNSAFE BECAUSE IT IS SMALLER THEN THE TIRES IT IS REPLACING. IT MAKES THE CAR TILT SO YOU CAN'T DRIVE AT SAFE SPEEDS NOT TO SAY THE DAMAGE YOU CAN DO TO YOUR CAR. I LEAVE IN A RURAL AREA AND SOME OF THE ROADS DON'T HAVE ENOUGH SHOULDER TO CHANGE ONE SPARE LET ALONE TWO.

OEM headlights had become dim and one could no longer be aimed, so I ordered these replacements through Amazon. I paid $92 to have them installed, and the mechanic let me know that the high beams could not be activated, except by holding the turn signal, making it dangerous to steer. In addition, when the headlights are on they create so much RF, the radio no longer gets most AM or FM stations. The mechanic confirmed, they are wired incorrectly, but did not wish to attempt to rewire them.

ESPECIALLY IF I HAVE TO PARK BESIDE A CURB. I CAN'T GET OUT! AND JUST A NOTE: AIRBAGS SAVE LIVES BUT I HATE BUCKET SEATS AND CONSOLES WITH CUP HOLDERS. SO MANY DISTRACTIONS NOW! I WISH I COULD STILL HAVE BENCH SEATS. THANKS

I BOUGHT THE CAR USED WITH APPROX. 43,000 MILES IN 2010, AND PAID FOR EXTENDED WARRANTY, BUT DIDN'T TEST ALL FUNCTIONS OF POWER WINDOWS, ONLY THE DRIVER SIDE WINDOW WORKED . I WAS UNAWARE OF THIS FOR MONTHS BECAUSE I SELDOM HAVE OTHERS IN MY CAR. ON JULY 18TH 2014,THE DRIVERS WINDOW WOULD NOT WORK. I HAD COMPLAINED ABOUT THE OTHER WINDOWS, BUT THOUGH I MIGHT HAVE PROBLEMS WITH SAFETY LOCKS .I HAD ALREADY CALLED ABOUT THE RECALL THAT I SAW ON TV, AND WAS TOLD THAT PART WAS NOT AT DEALERS, AND WOULD BE CALLED WHEN THEY GOT THE PARTS. I WAS TOLD I WOULD BE CHARGED FOR ANY REPAIRS TO WINDOWS AS MY EXTRA WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. I THOUGHT WARRANTY WAS FOR 90,000 MILES, I DID TALK TO MANAGER, AND TOLD HIM I HAD C/O NUMEROUS TIMES ABOUT THE 3 NON WORKING WINDOWS.AT THE SAME TIME DRIVERS WINDOW QUIT, THE LIGHT ON ODOMETER QUIT WORKING.I DID HAVE CAR TO JUMP, AND KEEP RUNNING AFTER TURNING OFF CAR, THEY DID FIX WITH IGNITION KIT. CONTINUED TO CALL TO SEE IF RECALLED PART WAS IN AND WAS TOLD I COULD PAY FOR EXAM ON WINDOWS ON WINDOWS AT THE SAME TIME. *TR
