2023 Chevrolet Colorado Driver assistance Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the driver-assistance system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Driver assistance reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

My 2023 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 cannot receive over‑the‑air (OTA) software updates because the gateway module is still running outdated firmware (XXX.mnf). General Motors issued Service Update XXX to correct this defect by performing a vehicle‑wide programming update. However, GM’s system incorrectly shows the bulletin as “closed” for my VIN even though the gateway module was never updated. The truck was sold to me by Tyrell Chevrolet in [XXX] with this safety‑related service update not completed properly. The dealership has confirmed they cannot perform the required update because GM’s system will not authorize it until the bulletin is reopened. GM corporate has been contacted multiple times, but after several days they have not reopened the bulletin or provided a resolution. Because the gateway module remains on outdated firmware, the vehicle cannot receive critical OTA updates related to safety, diagnostics, and module stability. This condition has been reported by other 2023 Colorado owners and has previously been associated with battery‑drain issues caused by software modules failing to sleep properly. GM has acknowledged the defect by issuing Service Update XXX, but they are refusing to reopen the update for my VIN despite the incomplete firmware and the vehicle’s inability to receive OTA updates. I am filing this complaint so the defect and GM’s refusal to correct it are formally documented. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

My 2023 Chevrolet Colorado (2.7L, approx. 49,000 miles) experiences sudden, intermittent loss of motive power involving the 8-speed automatic transmission. The transmission sets codes and the vehicle drops into limp mode, capped at roughly 45 mph, without warning. The most dangerous symptom is a total loss of acceleration from a stop, especially on inclines — pressing the accelerator produces no response. On one occasion, stopped on a slight incline, the vehicle rolled backward toward the car behind me when it failed to move forward on accelerator input. I narrowly avoided a collision. On a separate occasion, after pressing the accelerator with no response, the vehicle then suddenly lurched forward into cross traffic; repeated presses produced inconsistent, delayed engagement, nearly causing a collision. To climb inclines I now have to hold the brake while applying throttle and slowly release the brake to prevent rollback. These are unpredictable loss-of-control events that create a serious crash risk in traffic. I believe this relates to a known issue affecting the GM 8-speed automatic transmission. The vehicle is currently at a GM dealer and I have an open GM Customer Care case. No crash, fire, or injury has occurred yet, but two near-collisions have.

The blind spot indicator on my truck activates randomly without any vehicle present, and I reported this issue immediately after purchasing it. Despite bringing the truck to Boyd Chevrolet in Henderson, NC multiple times, I am repeatedly told they “can’t duplicate the problem” and therefore cannot repair it. Their only explanation has been that “maybe a future software update will fix it.” No components have ever been replaced to rule out a defective part, and I have no indication that Boyd Chevrolet has escalated the issue to Chevrolet, or anyone else, for further guidance. After nearly three years and 30,000 miles, the problem remains completely unaddressed while my warranty is nearing expiration. This is not a minor inconvenience — it is a serious safety hazard. On several occasions, I have begun changing lanes only for the blind spot indicator to suddenly illuminate, causing me to jerk the wheel to avoid a car that isn’t there. The unexpected false alerts create a dangerous overreaction that puts me and others at risk. I want my truck properly diagnosed and repaired, but I have been unable to find a solution through the dealership. I have detailed service records documenting every visit and every time I reported this issue. At this point, I need meaningful action taken to resolve this ongoing safety concern.

My truck has used automatic emergency braking multiple times while driving at variable speeds with no obstacles or vehicles in front of me causing whiplash and further damage to my neck that has 5 budging discs. Since I’m only allowed to add a specific mileage and speed below, I’ll note here that it’s happened since I purchased the truck with roughly 35000 miles on it to the current mileage of 44000 and between speeds of 30mph-75mph.

The automated emergency breaking system has been triggered unintentionally twice traveling at speeds of 50 miles per hour. There was no vehicle or object that entered our path. We were traveling behind cars at least three car lengths behind that remained at the same speed. Had there been vehicles behind us, we would have been rear ended at high speeds as the truck came to almost a complete stop on its own immediately.

Blind spot monitoring system consistently malfunctions, illuminating the driver mirror warning light when no other vehicles are present. It occurs more frequently after dark, which flickers the bright light continuously, or leaves it on constantly, creating a significant distraction and mistrust of the systems reliability. Dealer had no recommendation for fix.

Traveling approximately 45 mph on a main road and brakes automatically engaged causing vehicle to abruptly stop. This due to faulty Automatic Emergency Braking system that has allegedly already been repaired with a software update. My child and I were in the vehicle and had another vehicle been directly behind us or even oncoming we would have likely been involved in a collision. There was no warning that came on other than the red flashing lights and beeping that engaged the same time as the automatic braking. I will likely have to go to seek medical care for soreness in my neck and back from the jarring of my body from the abrupt stop. Waiting to hear if daughter is feeling any pain as well, as mine onset through the day after the incident.

Recall was performed on truck about a year ago for the pedestrian collision automatic braking. Today the truck locked up the brakes in traffic and there wasn’t a pedestrian in sight. I believe the recall didnt truly fix the issue, as it has given false alerts before without applying the brakes

Forward collision braking activated for no reason and will hard brake. Has done it in the middle of an empty parking lot as well as when driving 65 MPH down the highway, twice. No major injuries happened either time other then sore necks and seatbelt marks. On 2 incidents only the driver was in the vehicle, the other incident consisted of the driver, front seat passenger and 2 children in the back seat. The vehicle has been inspected by dealership. The vehicle now has brake and router problems, which the dealership has said is from hard braking. The vehicle has a bad vibration when applying the brakes.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? To my knowledge, which is limited on vehicle diagnosis, the engine valve body is having an issue finding a gear when starting from a stop. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The vehicle engine will sputter and jolt forward and attempt to go to a higher or lower gear when approaching the stop . Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? The problem is reproducible, but the dealership is stating i would need a check engine light to have it serviced or seen. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No visible alerts of fault when issue occurs or thereafter.

Was driving approx 30 mph down road when alert/light flashing for crash detection. At the same the brakes slammed on causing the wheel to pull to the right and pulling the wheel from my hands. This sudden stop was abrupt enough to leave seatbelt mark on shoulder. There was no car in front or behind me in my lane of travel. There were no people on either side of the road walking. I have had the light go off a few times with the bell but no sudden braking until an update was run last night. Which according to the Chevy recall was for ECM issue. Recall software update N242452130. I called the dealer , spoke the service manager Mike and told him what happened. He tells me him and his wife bought a 2024 Chevy Equinox that did the exact same thing. Ok, how is that supposed to make me feel better? The braking was violent and if it happened in city traffic I have no question in my mind that would have been a [XXX] crash. Every single time there is an update push there is a problem. This has been the worst. after looking up the VIN does not show part of the original recall from your agency. The collision avoidance system quit working. The warning light was displayed on the instrument cluster but no other warnings were sounded. After taking it to the dealer for repairs, they got the light to go out by downloading another software version, but it did not fix the problem. It only removed the light. The truck still would not give a warning when approaching another vehicle too fast or get too close at certain speeds. The dealer has kept it so far a total of 12 days and have yet to fix the problem.

The contact owns a 2023 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while driving approximately 5-30 MPH on several occasions, and occasionally while reversing out of a parking spot, the Forward Collision Avoidance Emergency Automatic Braking system unintendedly activated and stopped the vehicle. The contact stated that several undisclosed warning lights were illuminated. Additionally, the check engine warning light had illuminated 30-35 days after purchasing the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the front collision wiring system, the electronic control unit, and the evaporative emissions control system needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the vehicle was possibly already repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V133000 (Electrical System, Forward Collision Avoidance); however, the failure occurred. The vehicle was taken to another dealer, Grieco Chevrolet of Delray Beach (2605 S Federal Hwy, Delray Beach, FL 33483) where it was diagnosed and determined that the front collision wiring system, the electronic control unit, and the evaporative emissions control system needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 8,300.

In January of 2024, my husband was driving our 2023 Chevrolet Colorado. he was pulling onto our street driving approimately 5 mph. The vehicle suddenly stopped for no apparent reason. AT this time, we did not file a complaint because it was a minor incident and no one was hurt. We brought the vehicle into the Chevrolet dealership for a safety recall for the front cameras . On [XXX] I was driving at 830am on a highway in the fast lane. No other vehicles were near me in my direction. No one was in front of me, besides me or behind me. I was driving approximately 57mph on a very clear and calm morning. My 2023 Chevrolet Colorado came to an abrupt stop for no reason at all. No lights flashed on my dashboard, the vehicle did not shake, warning me that I was shifting lanes (because I was not), nothing came on at all. I was given zero warning that the vehicle was abruptly stopping. I have severe whiplash and have been undergoing treatment for this trauma. No police report was filed because there was no damage done to the vehicle. I immediately called, reported and turned the vehicle into the local Chevrolet dealership here in Reno, Nevada. GM's third party did a full investigative report, pulled the black box from the vehicle on December 15th, 2024 and just today, 70 days after the claim, GM informed us that they want to buy the vehicle back. GM is claiming "what happened is consistent with the unwanted or undesired automatic emergency braking system failing." This is the only communication we have had with GM thus far. 1. Other: Turn signal - when turning right with the signal activated, once you straighten the wheel, the turn signal stalk will reset to the middle but will activate the left turn signal. 2. Adaptive cruise control - For no reason the brakes will activate, there is no vehicle in front and the windshield is clean. 3. Blind spot warning - These BSW indicators will go off at random with no vehicles beside mine. This occurs more at night, but does happen during the day. When this happens at night the yellow indicator is so bright that you cannot even see what might (or is not) in your blind spot. This faulty indicator is going to get someone hurt as other drivers with the same issue might over correct.
