2014 Chevrolet Express 1500 Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2014 Chevrolet Express 1500, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. WE BOUGHT A USED 2014 EXPRESS 1500 CARGO VAN FROM CHEVROLET OF MONTEBELLO ON MAY OF 2017. THE "SERVICE AIR BAG" INDICATIOR HAS APPEARED IN MY DASHBOARD OFF AND ON SINCE THE DAY WE BOUGHT IT. AS I CONDUCTED MY PERSONAL RESEARCH I CAME ACROSS A COUPLE OF ARTICLES STATING THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS PARTICULAR CARGO VAN FOR THE "SERVICE AIR BAG." I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAD TOLD ME I HAD TO PAY $130 FOR DIAGNOSTICS, WHEN THEY HAD "FOUND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS", THEY WERE CHARGING ME A LITTLE OVER $500 TO FIX "THE PROBLEM."

My spouse was driving our family south on Hwy 101 at about 50 mph near Arch Cape, Oregon on June 25, 2022 during 93 degree weather. Just before Falcon Cove state park as we were going up a hill and people were braking to turn into the park, my spouse yelled "we have no brakes". The brakes were hard as a wall and he was using both feet to get us to slow down. I could not feel us slowing. It was utterly terrifying. He did finally get us slowed down likely due to the weight we were carrying and the hill. But the brakes were so terrible we couldn't even park in a space because we might go down the cliff (hill/slope). We had no cell service and I couldn't get anyone to help us so I ran up and down hills trying to get service in that heat. Finally, my spouse said we'd have to get back into the truck and drive to get service. I reluctantly let him drive us slowly to the next AND LAST lookout at the top of the mountain. I still didn't have enough bars to call out but we couldn't go further because it would be a downslope with a cliff to the ocean on the right. I called 911 who patched me to a tow. The mechanic said it was the brake vacuum pump. He ordered the part and saved it. We were charged $595.27 for the tow, parts, and labor. I researched and learned of the GM recall on the brake pump for 3.7 million vehicles and your investigation that closed 4/2022. It appears they were supposed to reprogram so there was more brake time or notice of failure. I contacted the dealer where we religiously service (I believe this repair is the ONLY time anyone else serviced this vehicle). I had them send me the complete service history (warranty and recall) included for BOTH of our trucks as they both fall under the recall. I could not find this reprogramming. I asked them to point it out and they're unresponsive. I'm still on vacation but clearly this is dangerous for everyone on the road. I have so much more to say and not enough characters remain. Reopen this investigation NOW!!!
