1998 Chevrolet P Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

I PURCHASED A 1998 CHEVY PRISM IN 2000 AND AFTER THE FOURTH YEAR OF OWNING THE CAR ALL OF THE INTERIOR DOOR HANDLES ARE BROKEN FROM BAD PLASTIC MATERIAL I WROTE A LETTER TO GMC THINKING THEY WOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT THEY WANTED TO KNOW HOW MANY MILES I HAD ON THE CAR . I TALKED TO A WOMAN FROM GMC AND ASKED HER CAN THEY REPLACE THE HANDLES SHE SAID I HAVE TO PURCHASE MORE HANDLES AT $99.00 EACH THAT'S $400.00. I LOOK AT THIS AS A SAFETY HAZARD IF ME AND MY FAMILY HAD EXIT THE CAR IN AN EMERGENCY I E CAR FIRE OR ACCIDENT WE'D BE IN TROUBLE. WHEN EVER WE EXIT OUR CHEVY PRISM WE HAVE TO ROLL THE WINDOW DOWN AND STICK OUR ARMS OUT OF THE WINDOW TO OPEN THE DOORS FROM THE OUTSIDE. THIS NOT JUST OUR CAR I'VE SEEN OTHER CHEVY PRISMS AND TOYOTA CAMRY'S ABOUT THE SAME YEAR,MAKE AND MODELS. THE AUTO COMPANY'S NEVER WANT TO DO ANYTHING UNTIL X AMOUNT OF PEOPLE ARE HURT OR KILLED FROM BAD MATERIAL USED TO PUT THESE AUTOMOBILE TOGETHER. I THINK THEY SHOULD LOOK IN TO THIS AND DECLARE A RECALL ON THE HANDLES. *TR

Too few reports in this category for a page of its own — they appear in the full complaint list.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
