2016 Chevrolet Suburban Suspension Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the suspension system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Suspension reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

There are 2 components of the vehicle that I believe are malfunctioning. The first component would be the brake system. At first the problem presented itself when going down a parking garage it was approximately 5 miles an hour while applying the brake and the brake suddenly got stuck and really sticky, I had to apply extreme pressure to the brake to get the vehicle to stop completely. It was only after I put the vehicle in park, turned it off, removed the keys from the ignition, open the doors, and then restarted the car afterwards where the brakes would become unstuck. Since that first incident in summer of 2024, there has been other similar incidents when I am breaking in a parking lot at lower speeds, on side streets at lower speeds, or any other circumstance where I would be applying the brake at lower speeds. The brakes would get very sticky hard to press and would not come to a complete stop unless using extreme force. This is a very scary incident because if there was a vehicle a pedestrian and we weren't able to stop the vehicle then we would have crashed and potentially hurt someone. We brought this up to our mechanic and he was not able to reproduce the issue. The engine light does not turn on for this issue and we are not able to produce any engine light codes for the braking issue. This issue continues to happen until this day and it is scary when it does happen. The second component that we believe is malfunctioning has to do with the suspension system, the air ride system. We have taken this problem to our mechanic since 2019, 2020. They've been able to temporarily repair the issue but after some time the part breaks down and we believe that this is a manufacturing issue. There is a warning lamp that appears. What happens is there is air constantly being pumped into the suspension and is drawing electricity from the battery and ultimately affecting other parts of the electronic components.

I replaced the shocks in Oct 2022 and paid for an alignment and now just over 2 years later the dealer said they needed replacing again. This front end has had constant problems, but now I see there was a recall on the 2016 Suburbans, but it is not listed under my VIN. I believe if they have had problems, possibly at another manufacturing, it should be considered that this is the problem. I have now paid for the repair of the upper control arm and both front shocks and a wheel alignment again. I paid more than double to have it repaired at the dealer because I believe my vehicle's VIN should be listed under NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID: 16V256000; REPORT DATE: APR 28, 2016.

THE TRANSMISSION ON MY 2016 CHEVY SUBURBAN STARTED TO GIVE ME PROBLEMS AT 30000 MILES, AT FIRST I DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS THE TRANSMISSION. THE TRUCK STARTED TO JUMP WHEN I SWITCHED GEARS, IT LAGGED ON ACCELERATING, THERE WAS A HUMMING NOISE AND GEARS SLIPPED. CURRENTLY AT 80000 MY TRANSMISSION NEEDS TO BE REPLACED CAR IS NO LONGER DRIVEABLE. I TOOK IT FOR SUSPENSION PROBLEMS AND I KEPT TELLING DEALER THAT THE TRUCK SEEMED OFF AND FURTHER INVESTIGATION IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS FAILING.

MY ISSUE SOUNDS VERY SIMILAR TO NHTSA ID NO. 11254723. I HAD TO HAVE THE FRONT STRUTS REPLACED AFTER IT WAS FOUND THAT THEY WERE BLOWN DURING AN INSPECTION. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS APPROXIMATELY 60K MILES, WHICH IS MUCH SHORTER THAN THE LIFE EXPECTANCY OF STRUTS. I WAS TOLD BY THE REPAIR SHOP THAT A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (05-03-08-002H) HAS BEEN PUBLISHED. SHOULD THIS BE A RECALL?

I JUST PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE A MONTH AGO AND ALREADY RECEIVED A RECALL FOR THE SOFTWARE AIRBAG ISSUE. I TRADED MY 2010 CHEVY SUBURBAN FOR THIS NEW ONE AND HAVE NOTICED THAT THE MOMENT I GET ONTO THE FREEWAY AND START TO ACCELERATE THE CAR STARTS TO VIBRATE SO BAD THAT ANYTHING IN THE MIDDLE CONSOLE STARTS TO RATTLE AND THE CONSOLE WILL SPILL ANY DRINKS SITTING THERE IN THE CUPHOLDERS. I HAVE OWNED CHEVY VEHICLES ALL MY LIFE AND AM VERY ANNOYED THAT THIS IS HAPPENING. SOMETHING IS SERIOUSLY WRONG. I ALSO JUST NOTICED THAT THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE SUSPENSION RECALL 42190 AND PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME I JUST BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE IN SEPT 2016 AND IT ONLY HAS 800 MILES ON IT AND NOTICES WENT OUT MAY-JUNE 2016 AND I WAS NOT MADE AWARE WHEN I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE. I WILL ALSO TALK TO THE DEALERSHIP ACCORDING TO THIS RECALL THE VEHICLE SHOULD NOT BE DRIVEN UNTIL ITS FIXED. WHO WAS GOING TO TELL ME THIS HAD I NOT LOOKED IT UP AND NOT DRIVING IT IS IMPOSSIBLE ITS OUR ONLY VEHICLE AND WERE A FAMILY OF 7. FOUR OF THOSE ARE MY BABIES. I ALSO WILL BE TAKING IT IN DUE TO THE RECALL 16007. THE VIBRATION OF THE VEHICLE WILL ALSO BE DISCUSSED AS WELL.

I OWN A 2016 CHEVY SUBURBAN LTZ PURCHASED FEB 29, 2016. IT IS NOW AT THE DEALER AND FOR A SECOND TIME DEALING WITH A VIBRATION ISSUE STARTING AT APPROXIMATELY 43 MPH AND CONTINUING TO WORSEN AS SPEED INCREASES. THE TIRES HAVE BEEN ROAD FORCED BALANCE BUT VIBRATION IS STILL PRESENT. THIS IS THE SECOND SUBURBAN WITH ISSUES, THE 2015 I HAD WAS SO PROBLEMATIC THAT GM DID TRADE ASSISTANCE TO GET ME OUT OF IT, BUT IT STILL COST ME MONEY. THE CURRENT 2016 SUBURBAN AS ONLY 1600 MILES ON IT AND VIBRATION ISSUES BEGAN AT APPROXIMATELY 900 MILES. I CANNOT DESCRIBE THE INCONVENIENCE AND FRUSTRATION I AM EXPERIENCING FOR A VEHICLE COSTING MORE THAN $70,000. GM KNOWS THERE IS A PROBLEM AND THEIR LACK OF FIXING IT OR ADDRESSING IT IS NOTHING SHORT OF CRIMINAL THEFT. THEY TAKE PEOPLE'S MONEY KNOWING THEIR VEHICLES ARE SUB-STANDARD THEN RELEGATE ME TO A PATHETIC LOANER VEHICLE, TELL ME IT IS "NORMAL" AND IN THE END TOSS A LITTLE MONEY FOR "TRADE ASSISTANCE" RESULTING IN ANOTHER PROBLEMATIC ISSUE. I BEG AND IMPLORE YOU AS THE FEDERAL REGULATORY AGENCY TO MAKE GM ACCOUNTABLE IMMEDIATELY. EITHER FORCE THEM TO IMMEDIATELY FIX THESE VEHICLES, FORCE THEM TO BUY THEM BACK AT FULL PURCHASE PRICES AND STOP THEM FROM SELLING THEM IMMEDIATELY. FRANKLY, THIS ISSUE IS THE SAME AS VW WITH TDI ENGINES EXCEPT THAT GM IS NOT COVERING IT UP AND FEDS ARE NOT FORCING THE HAND. HELP PROTECT THE MONEY AND LIVES OF US CITIZENS. THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS!
