2017 Chevrolet Tahoe Powertrain (other) Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the powertrain system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Powertrain (other) reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that while driving approximately 15 MPH uphill in the mountains, the transmission started slipping, followed by a loud banging sound. The contact stated that later, while fishing, there was an abnormal metallic sound like BBs hitting a tin can coming from the vehicle. The contact stated that previously, while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lunged forward, followed by grinding and banging sounds. There was no indication of a fluid leak coming from the vehicle. The contact stated that shortly afterwards, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was restarted and resumed normal operation. No warning lights were illuminated. An unrelated warning light for the oxygen sensor was illuminated. The local dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and informed that there was no recall coverage or assistance available for the vehicle. The manufacturer referred the owner to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 181,000.

My 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe equipped with a 6L80 transmission began experiencing transmission-related drivability issues at approximately 130,000 miles. The vehicle jerked on takeoff, had delayed/slow shifting, produced a whining noise, and later had intermittent shuddering/surging while driving. During service, metallic debris/shavings were found in the transmission fluid. The transmission ultimately required replacement at my expense. I am aware of GM Technical Service Bulletin 20-NA-142, “Shudder/Surging While Driving,” which includes 2015–2022 Chevrolet Tahoe models equipped with MYC/MYD transmissions and discusses conditions that may be identified as torque converter shudder. My vehicle’s 6L80 transmission corresponds with GM RPO MYC, and the symptoms/repair findings appeared consistent with the bulletin. I am filing this complaint to document the transmission failure and related safety concern, as the jerking, delayed shifting, and shuddering affected normal vehicle operation.

My 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe LT 4WD with a 5.3L engine experienced sudden drivability issues related to confirmed AFM lifter failure, including severe engine misfires (P0300), rough idle, shaking at stoplights, and significant loss of power while driving uphill and under load. The vehicle has approximately 140,000 miles and has been consistently maintained through Chevrolet dealerships. The condition has been diagnosed by Premier Chevrolet of Carlsbad. The engine experienced loss of power during operation, creating a potential safety concern when accelerating or driving in traffic conditions requiring consistent engine power. This issue appears related to widely documented AFM lifter failures on GM 5.3L engines.

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that while driving on the highway at 70 MPH, the vehicle lost automotive power. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact was forced to pull over and had the vehicle towed to a local independent mechanic where the vehicle was diagnosed, and the contact was advised that the transmission was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 128,000.

The transmission dropped 2 thousand miles over my warranty at 102k miles. I was taking my son to see his surgeon and the car started jerking and making noises in the middle of a busy intersection. We almost got hit several times trying to get it to the side of the road for safety. I had to pay almost $1800 to get it towed home (we were in Peoria about 150 miles from home to see his doctor). There were no indications the transmission was going out and never should have at that mileage. I always do regular maintenance and keep all my receipts. I then paid 6k out of pocket to have it replaced with a better transmission since I learned GM put a bad transmission in the Tahoe I have (I was told I missed the time limit to have it fixed on their dime). Then 6 weeks later a fuel injector and the lifters failed due to the active fuel management. No one was hurt thankfully because I was just leaving home to go to work when I noticed the tapping sound and had my mechanic come look at it. Him and 2 other mechanics confirmed it was the lifters. I had already borrowed money to replace the transmission and can’t afford the $12k quote to fix it. Now it has been sitting in my driveway for almost a year unable to be driven. It is however causing me severe depression. I’m borrowing my son’s car while paying almost $700 monthly on a Tahoe I can’t even drive. I was even more sad when I found out there’s thousands of people with the same issue. GM should be ashamed of themselves!

Purchased 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe on 1/15/2025 with 50,647 miles on it. At exactly the 40 day mark, we noticed a problem when the vehicle began downshifting. When slowing down to stop at a red light, we could feel the transmission begin jerking as it shifted down and the check engine light came on. It has been taken back to the dealership (where we bought it), 5 times as of yesterday and they cannot fix the problem. The engine idles rough, downshifting is extremely hard, check engine comes on and off sporadically. The transmission temperature goes up and the dashboard lighting dims intermittently. This vehicle appeared to be in extremely good physical condition with very few miles, that's why it was purchased.

I was traveling through New York pulling my 21 foot RV and and the transmission on my Chevy truck (83,000 miles) heated up, the engine light came on, the transmission message occurred, and stopped working. We were stuck on the side of the road. The mechanic said these 6 speed transmissions often fail and it cost me $11,000 to rebuild it. He said the torque converter broke into pieces and traveled through my transmission lines. Online I learned this wasa very common problems with these kind of trucks and suvs.

My transmission is slipping and causing safety concerns while driving on the highway. It’s a 2017 Chevy Tahoe that has less than 100,000 miles and we have been reading on the internet about many others having the same problem. We just took it to a shop and they informed us that it’s a common issue with this model chevy and it will cost $5,000 to replace the transmission.

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH and depressing the accelerator pedal, the engine revved, but the vehicle failed to respond as needed. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to pull to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed with transmission failure. The vehicle was then towed to a transmission specialist, where the same assessment was made. The transmission specialist determined that the transmission needed to be replaced or rebuilt. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 116,000.

In 2022, I had to have cylinders 1-7 replaced. At the time, these vehicles were known to have transmission problems. My vehicle was 3,000 over warranty and Chevy denied any fault and only reimbursed me half of the $1500 to get replaced. Today, my complete transmission failed. Two years later. Chevy denied any fault regardless of lawsuits filed. Is going to cost $6300 for total replacement. I have NEVER in my life had transmission issues on a vehicle--especially so early in the life of the vehicle. The car almost left me stranded on the side of the interstate. Chevy knows about this problem and will not make good on a vehicle I paid over $60000 for.

The transmissions stopped working while my wife was driving. The car stopped in the intersection. She was able to shut it off and it restarted so that she could pull into a parking lot. Car was towed to the dealer. The car has 74,000 miles on it and we were told it needs a new transmission and that it would cost $6900 to repair. I called GM and filed a claim with them in hopes they would offer some assistance. I was told nothing could be done. I have since spoke to several repair shops and checked the internet and have found out that it seems GM is having this problem often, for the years 2015-2017 for the Tahoe, Yukon, and Silverado.

All of a sudden my transmission (6 speed) started slipping. No abuse /drag racing lol. Just normal driving. I limped into my local dealer and they said the transmission was “shot” and that they couldn’t let m drive it home. Also the transmission mechanic was outside smoking and I vape so I started a conversation with him about these 6 sp transmissions and he said “ I can’t count how many I’ve replaced” “ even with less than 80k miles. This is negligent at the least by Chevrolet to intstall dangerous and threatening transmissions. Bad Chevy BAD!

I just experienced an issue with my transmission, I was driving home from work in cruise control and started up a bridge when my vehicle seemed to disengage the clutch and start rapidly slowing down (I was going up the incline of the bridge) and the motor redlined trying to maintain speed. I immediately switched it back into regular drive mode and noticed that the engine was not engaging with the transmission. I then placed the column shift into the manual setting and dropped down to 3rd gear, the tahoe gave a really abrupt and hard impact on the transmission and I got it to reangage to continue up the incline. This happened more than a dozen times in the remaining 15 miles to my home, both in and out of the manual setting. I did not attempt to go back to curise control. When I got home I turned the car off and checked the trans fluid level and saw nothing on the dipstick, I let it cool off and I have fluid past the "hot" mark and into the S curve of the stick. I was able to determine that my transmission was having a majority of its issues beyone 3rd gear. After doing some very quick research on Google it appears that I'm not the only one having transmission issues, primarily with 3rd and 4th gear of this year make and model. Is this something that is being investigated? My vehicle has 103k miles and is planned for a fluid change in the next couple of weeks (transmission, transfer case, and rear differential), per the O&M book that came with the vehicle. This just happened today and I have not had an opportunity to reach out to the dealership to question them about it. There were no warning indicators or error messages during the drive or during the time this occurred. All recall notices have been repaired on the tahoe to date, and I have kept up with the other fluid changes and other misc o&m recommendations. Please, any feedback would be very appreciated as this is my primary and safest vehicle to transport my kids.

Transmission on my 2017 Chevy Tahoe failed and needs a complete replacement. I notice a class-action lawsuit has been filed for other Chevy models but the Tahoe was not include although it has the same transmission/gearbox. I was on a major interstate when the transmission failed causing the vehicle to decelerate. The car was towed to a Chevy dealership where they have confirmed the transmission needs to be replaced and this has been an ongoing issue with this vehicle. There were no warning lights prior. The check engine light came on after the transmission failed.

The transmission went out at 93,000 miles and we took it in to be repaired under warranty. We were told a new transmission would be installed after being shipped from Detroit MI. When we picked up the vehice we discovered it was not a new transmission but a remanufactured transmission. We drove it home 25 miles home and it did not shift properly. We immediately called the dealership back to report it and was asked to bring it back. The dealership check it and said there was nothing wrong with it we just needed to drive it so it could learn our driving habits. This transmission lasted 104 days. We were out of town and my husband drove it to town to get breakfast and the transmission was slipping so bad he almost didn't get back with it. We had to have it towed to the nearest dealer 30 miles away and rent a car to get home. The second remanufactured transmission was installed by GM on 5/23/23 and we picked it up on 5/26/23. Upon driving it home this 2nd transmission was shifting hard. I contacted GM regarding it and was told to take it to be checked out. Once again we were told we just needed to drive it so it cold learn our driving habits. It is unsafe to drive as my husband drove it 4 miles to the grocery store and still at the traffic light he is pressing the gas to go and the vehicle would not move/go forward. He quickly had to put his flasher on and put the vehicle in park to keep from being hit from behind. He was finally able to get the vehicle to move and got home. The vehicle shifts so hard that it feels like you have been hit from behind by another car. GM keeps telling me there is nothing wrong with the vehicle but it is not safe to drive when you dont know if the transmission is gonna go out while you are going 70 mph down the interstate or get rearended becasue yourr vehicle doesn't move when the light turns green.
