2024 Chevrolet Trax Electrical Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the electrical system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Electrical reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Headlight Issue While driving at night on a dark country road the headlights all of a sudden reduced visibility to about 5 feet and had a blacked out dead spot (like a dark shelf). We had to drive roughly 25 miles with this limited visibility which was extremely dangerous and nerve racking. The visibility range improved the next day but the dead spot (shelf) is still visible and visibility is still poor and limited to about 100 feet. This still makes night driving very difficult and dangerous. I contacted dealership regarding issue and all they did was raised the headlights 3 inches. This only raised the dead spot up a little bit but is still visible. I notified them a second time and no action was taken because there was no recall for this issue on vehicle. In 2022 models there was a recall for the exact same issue.

The contact owns a 2024 Chevrolet Trax. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 - 50 MPH, the message that an update was needed was displayed. The contact selected to complete the update later; however, the computer system continued to perform the update, causing all indicators, screens, and displays to black out. The contact was able to drive to the residence. The following morning, the systems operated correctly, and the update had completed. While attempting to turn off the vehicle, the radio failed to turn off at the same time. The contact had to first turn off the radio manually. While driving approximately 40 MPH, the message “Power Steering Fluid Low - Drive with Care” was displayed. The contact was able to make it to a stoplight after idling and then attempting to make a left turn, but the vehicle failed to exceed 6 MPH. The contact drove to Auto Zone. A certified mechanic confirmed that the power steering fluid was low. The certified mechanic diagnosed the vehicle, and the check engine warning light was displayed. The contact confirmed that the warning light was illuminated; however, when the mechanic inspected the vehicle, the warning light was no longer illuminated. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was informed of the issue and was unable to provide a cause for the failure. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 29,000.

I have a 2024 Chevy Trax Activ that was originally purchased in British Columbia, CA and subsequently purchased through a private dealer in New Mexico. It has just gone over the 36,000 mile warranty. The infotainment system including the speedometer will occasionally flicker and go black. Additionally the metric to US conversion of mileage will revert back to metric once the vehicle is shut off and restarted. This happens intermittently. There are also USB and Bluetooth connection issues. The vehicle does not show up under any bulletins or recalls as the origin was initially purchased in Canada. This problem has been reported to GM and Chevy customer service. How do I add this to the recall and NHTSA bulletin so I can get this repaired?

To Whom It May Concern, I am submitting this formal complaint regarding a malfunction in the air conditioning system of my 2024 Chevrolet Trax. Specifically, the evaporator and/or condenser has failed, resulting in inadequate cooling performance and potential system leakage. This issue is more than a matter of comfort—it presents a significant safety concern. Operating the vehicle in high temperatures, particularly in Texas, creates hazardous conditions inside the cabin. Excessive heat can lead to driver fatigue, dehydration, and reduced concentration. Additionally, the malfunctioning A/C system affects humidity control, which may cause windshield fogging and reduced visibility while driving. The problem has been consistently reproducible during normal vehicle operation. Symptoms include poor cooling performance, inconsistent air temperature, and possible unusual odors or sounds when the A/C system is in use. Notably, no warning lights or dashboard messages appeared prior to the failure, making it difficult to detect the issue early. At this time, the vehicle is available for inspection and can be evaluated by a dealership, certified technician, or manufacturer representative upon request. I request a thorough inspection to confirm the failure and determine whether this is due to a manufacturing or design defect. If necessary, I am also willing to have the vehicle reviewed by independent service professionals or relevant authorities. Given that this issue has occurred in a nearly new vehicle, it raises concerns about reliability, quality control, and potential widespread defects affecting other vehicles of the same model. I urge prompt investigation and corrective action to ensure driver safety and product integrity. Please advise on the next steps for inspection, repair, and resolution of this matter. I appreciate your prompt attention to this serious issue. My 2024 Chevy Trax’s engine (1.2L turbocharged I3 engine) went out while driving on the expressway (about 70mph) in the middle to left lane. I had to come to a complete stop and safely and immediately get my car on the left shoulder without injuring myself or others around me. My own safety was severely at risk as I was as close to the dividing wall on the left side as I possibly could be but cars are racing through right next to me. Another safety risk to be added is I was dropped off in the most sketchiest plaza and stranded from 12/1am-3am. I was left to lock myself in my non operating vehicle in a country I do not reside in. Issue was confirmed the following day or two at a dealership I got the car towed to, they found a hole in my engine block due to a rod. And all documents can be provided. Police and blocker trucks were unable to arrive to the scene for 40+ min and the car was fully investigated by GM. There were no engine lights or warnings on the Chevrolet app or car dash. The only thing I can mention is on my last documented oil change, the oil was low due to high consumption, no leaks were located. Dealership also found the fuse box blown, I assume hot oil gushed all over my wire harnesses or the oil switch flipped the sensor which caused further issues, or simply a power surge. Current cause is unknown.

On March 22, 2026, I was driving at approximately 45 mph, and my daughter was in the passenger seat, trying to connect her music to the car radio and the instrument panel (dashboard) screens went completely blank. For several seconds, I had not readings from the dashboard lighting. It went completely black. It then reset itself, much like a computer when you restart it. Within a short time (less than a minute) the instrument panel began working again. This was the third time this has happened to this vehicle. The first time was in July 2024 and the second time in November 2025. Both of those incidents were reported to NHTSA. There had been a software recall for NHTSA 23V744000 for this very problem in 2024 Chevrolet Trax, but my VIN was not included in the safety recall for increased risk of crash. I brought the Trax to the dealership after the third incident. They did a software update on 25-NA-071. I hope this remedies the problem.

Fire reported

I was driving down the highway going with the flow of traffic and my car caught fire. I was told by the mechanic that “the turbo line combusted and put a hole in the engine” I’ve also been told “oil got on the turbo belt and caught fire” I’ve also been told “the software recall actually had nothing to do with the software and it was an issue with turbos and something was mechanically wrong with this car. I was in the car with my 9 month old daughter. In the middle lane in the highway. The car instantly stopped accelerating leaving us going very slow compared to others. We could’ve been killed! I had to figure out how to get over and then get my daughter out of the car safely and wait on the side of the highway with a baby for fire and police to come put the fire out. When I was driving it sounded like pressure popped under the car and then I could almost hear pieces flying out. And then the dash lights came on telling me to turn the engine off. It was extremely unsafe and now I’m afraid to even drive with my baby in any car.

My noise cancelation malfunctioned from the first month of of purchasing it 11/2023. It took two years numerous dealership visits, update after update. I filed a lemon law claim. I had a GM claim. No one could fix it. They told me I could do 3 things. Update again, cut the wires (which of course voids the entire warranty) or have them disconnected (if they could even be disconnected). I finally found a dealership in Cayuga, Indiana that fixed the problem by actually disconnecting the noise cancelation. It got so loud you couldn't even hear anyone talking in the car. It gave anyone a headache if they ride more than 30 minutes at a time. The noise cancelation wouldn't shut off. It just sounded like

I purchased the vehicle back in June of 2023, brand new, fresh off the lot and from then the issue began. I had a leak in the fuel line and the engine blew. That was all fixed. But the main issue was the loud vibrating noise that the service department tried to correct multiple times and couldn’t tell where it was coming from. Diagnostics were ran and the vehicle was in the shop multiple times because the noise was unbearable. I took it to 2 dealership service centers to see if anyone could locate it. From both service centers and other sales rep, the 2024 Chevrolet Trax 1RS has this issue and no matter the updates and corrections that were attempted it couldn’t be corrected. I submitted a complaint to corporate where they decided to send a “technician” from their office. Only the tech could not duplicate the issue but everyone else could. Because of that the buy back option was off the table and I was given a 2,000 certificate for another car, I still owed 21k for the trax. GM/Chervrolet technician failed to properly diagnose an issue that is common with those specific vehicles and now I am being ignored and looking for assistance

Vehicle randomly shuts down for few seconds and then restarts - occasionally it will not restart the engine and I have to manually turn the key. This occurs when I am driving and is a safety hazard. I have had battery checked several time and it always passes - I was directed to open a ticket for a recall - as this issue is known with other Chevy's. A couple times it occurred while turning the corner - luckily no accident occurred.

We have a 2024 Chevrolet Trax purchased in July 2024, brand new with 6 miles. On Jan 9, 2026, we towed it to Serra Chevrolet for service due to repetitive screen blackouts and the inability to start the car. On Jan 16, 2026, we picked up the car. The car was diagnosed with a radiator leak, a replacement of the high-pressure fuel pump, and an update to the information system. Within two hours, the car would not start again, and we had it towed back to the dealer. We have been told that it now requires an entirely new engine, and we have been renting a car since January 9th, with no reasonable solutions from the dealer or GM Customer Care. We have also been informed that the engine is on backorder, and we have no timeline for its repair.

I was driving at a low rate of speed after leaving my house and the instrument panel (dashboard) screens went completely blank. It was as if the computer system was resetting/rebooting. Within a few seconds, the instrument panel screen started working again and I could see the instrument panel readings. It was unnerving as I had my daughter with me. This is the second time the instrument panel has gone completely blank. The first time was in July 2024, and I filed a report with NHTSA in complaint number 11677778. That complaint generated no recall for my vehicle even though there is a recall NHTSA ID: 23V744000 for 2024 Chevrolet Trax vehicles with the same problem I have now have had twice. Since this problem has occurred twice, and there is already a recall on 2024 Trax vehicles for the problem I am reporting, there is an electrical system issue that should be corrected as it is clearly a safety issue.

This has been three years of dealing with us. General Motors still has no solution to it refused to do a buyback in my car offered me an extra warranty on electrical components but that you can’t even figure out what the issue is. I’m paying almost $700 for a car that I have nothing but issues with.
