2013 Chevrolet Volt Problems
Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component
Data refreshed
What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2013 Chevrolet Volt, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
The passenger presence sensor is failing or failed because every time someone sit in there the airbag turns on and off repeatedly every 2-3 mins and gives a service airbag warning and if no one is sitting in the passenger seat then it just stays on. Could be really dangerous if a wreck happens while it’s glitching in the off mode and could cause death. Multiple people have had this problem with the volts and there is even a thing you can by to completely bypass the airbag going off which shows how common the problem is if there is a solution to eliminate it in an unsafe/not factory manner
The passenger occupancy sensor gives a false positive. The only way I can get rid of the beeping is plug in the seatbelt. I have read on Reddit forums that this is a very common problem with 2013 volts, but for some reason there isn't a recall. This is a safety issue. Thank you!
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
Fully charged. Goes from electric to generator/gas propulsion and abruptly slowes about 1/2 speed. Very dangerous.

Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
Fully charged. Goes from electric to generator/gas propulsion and abruptly slowes about 1/2 speed. Very dangerous.
I received the "Propulsion Power is Reduced" Alert engine light while driving in "Normal" mode on the freeway at around 60mph with 8-9 miles of Battery capacity, it showed 0 miles of Battery forcing the Gas Engine on and the vehicle hesitated upon applying the accelerator for the remainder of the drive. My safety and that was others was at risk because the acceleration dropped quickly and I was on a busy freeway at the time when the Alert happened causing further hesitation. Upon stopping I could not get the vehicle to take a charge nor would it start up until a mechanic arrived and was able to confirm the problem.
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim

Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.

Front passenger seat sensor intermittently fails, causing the Passenger Airbag indicator to switch to OFF (even if a passenger is present) with an accompanying "Service Airbag" message on the dashboard and illumination of the service airbag light. This occurs usually driving above 25mph, but can happen stationary, and lasts for anywhere from 5 seconds to a minute (more commonly shorter). The issue appears some weeks more than others, usually activating most days a week but sometimes have a week or two where it does not happen.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
Sudden loss of power. Driving on freeway. Speed decreased by 25 mph. Just about avoided a rear end accident. Have seen that 2016 onwards Volts have experienced this malfunction. Request that it be noted that this is a 2013 model with less than 60,000 miles. Have already had the latest programming done by Chevy.
When Im driving on the hi way, it sounds like it keeps accelerating, sounds like its going to explode. The pulsation warning comes on, then the pulsation warning will go away and the sound goes away.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
While driving, the car developed a brake malfunction. when the brake pedal is depressed you can feel the pedal pulsating and was not slowing down until you pressed harder then the brakes apply abruptly causing risk of rear ending. Upon pulling over to the hard shoulder the pedal pulsating/drumming continued to happen even though the car is completely stopped and is in parking gear. The symptom is similar to the service bulletin PIC5734A. [XXX] The car was driven to the nearest dealership 'Dublin Chevorlet' in Dublin CA and the car has been there for 4 weeks since GM is unable to help resolve the problem. I have reached out to GM and opened a support case. Case number [XXX] ]. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Vehicle does not allow driver to driven uphill when packed uphill but keeps rolling down the hill even upon being throttled. Also emergency brake goes not catch but locks the wheel. Chevy diagnosed the issues agreed is manufacture defect, parties contracted agreement singed for repairs at no cost. Upon arrival of parts Roseville Chevrolet wanted $4,500 be paid said it was out of warrantee contrarily with the written agreement. Presently I have minors cannot ride in the car. The car may also cause accident and injury to owner and other road users if not fixed.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim

Stuck accelerator pedal during acceleration
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
Leaking water when it rains under the drivers side floor board.
THERE IS A DESIGN FLAW IN THE BODY OF THE VEHICLE THAT CAUSES WATER TO LEAK IN AND POOL IN THE FRONT PASSENGER FLOORBOARD. THERE ARE LOTS OF ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS NEAR WHERE THIS WATER POOLS THAT COULD CAUSE A SAFETY ISSUE.

Other / unspecified
Reports whose component NHTSA recorded as unknown, or that do not map to one of the categories above.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2013 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated while driving approximately 76-77 MPH, the vehicle experienced reduced power. The message "Low Propulsion" was displayed, and the engine revved significantly. The contact moved over to the far-right lane to pull over to the side of the road as needed. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring temporarily. The contact had researched the failure online and became aware that the release of the accelerator pedal while the failure was occurring could temporarily correct the failure. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 61,000.
The contact owns a 2013 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated while driving 50 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power with the check engine warning light and low oil pressure warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where a diagnostic test result was undisclosed; however, the contact was informed that the vehicle needed an ASC high-voltage battery to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired after the ASC battery was replaced. The contact stated that the propulsion system warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.
From owner reports, verbatim
Tire pressure dose not hold air to recommended tire pressure. Passenger tire seem to control pressure on all four tires. Once tire pressure is inflated to recommended pressure. All four tires deflate and inflated to uneven pressure after driving. Vehicle was seen by Terry Cullen Johnsboro, Ga. They said the passenger rim need to be replaced 800.00. But I ask about the rubber oring around the valve stem replace, they said no oring on the valve stem. I ask about a valve replaced they said no a new tire is the best they could do. My gas mileage dropped to 28 miles a gal from 40. This is a critical fix for a car that has no spare tire. In addition, oil change could not be done on the transmission because there is 126,000 miles on the car is what the technician had said.
THIS NOTE IS SUPPLEMENTAL TO NHTSA #10940031 OF 1/1/17. THE TIRE THAT HAD JUST REPLACED THE SECOND FAILED TIRE ALSO SUSTAINED DAMAGE DEEMED TO BE UNACCEPTABLE TO REPAIR ONLY ABOUT 200 MILES AFTER IT WAS INSTALLED. GIVEN 3 OF THESE TIRES FAILED VERY PREMATURELY OVER 7.5K MILES, NEVER MIND 2 IN 200 MILES, THIS SUGGESTED TO ME A POSSIBLE ATYPICAL WEAKNESS IN THE DESIGN OF THESE TIRES SO I SCRAPPED ALL 4 FUEL MAX TIRES AND REPLACED THEM WITH THE FAR SUPERIOR GOODYEAR ASSURANCE TRIPLETRED TIRES. HAVING PUT 70K+/- MILES ON A SET OF PREVIOUSLY OWNED TRIPLETRED TIRES WITHOUT A SINGLE FAILURE UNDER VIRTUALLY IDENTICAL CONDITIONS TO THOSE I USED THE FUEL MAX TIRES UNDER I CAN STATE WITH CONFIDENCE THAT THEY ARE MUCH MORE DAMAGE RESISTANT TIRES THAN THE FUEL MAX VERSION OF THE ASSURANCE LINE IN ADDITION TO HAVING NOTICEABLY GREATER/SAFER TRACTION IN RAIN AND SNOW. *TR

Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
THIS IS THE THIRD INCIDENT SINCE I HAD THIS CAR ALONG WITH CHARGING ISSUE IN THE BEGINNING OF OWNERSHIP THIS CHEVROLET VOLT HAS BEEN BEEN DEEM TOTAL FROM THE ACCIDENT THAT OCCURRED ON JANUARY 6 BECAUSE OF THE STEERING LOCKING UP
OCT 24TH MORNING MURRIETA, CA , IT WAS RAINING AND BIG THUNDERS AND LIGHTING. MY WIFE STARTED FOR WORK , THE CAR WAS FULLY CHARGED. SHE MADE HER USUAL RIGHT TURN FROM " MURRIETTA HOTSPRINGS RD " TO " BUTTERFIELD STAGE ROAD" IN CITY OF MURRIETA / TEMECULA CA. SHE PUT THE CAR IN "REGENERATION MODE" AS THE ROAD WAS DOWN HILL. THERE WAS A BIG LIGHTING AND FOLLOWED BY A BIG THUNDER SOUNDS. SHE SAW WHITE LIGHT AND WAS BLINDED FOR FRACTION OF SECOND, IT WAS RAINING HEAVY, IMMEDIATELY SHE FELT THE CAR WAS FLOATED/DRIFTING TO LEFT , HIT THE CENTER RAOD DIVIDER AND ALL AIR BAGS WERE ALREADY DEPLOYED. SHE TRIED HER BEST TO PULL THE CAR TO RIGHT (SHE COULD NOT SEE DUE TO AIRBAGS DEPLOYED ALL EXCEPT PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG) BUT COULD NOT DO SO , SHE ALSO STATED THE STEERING WAS STRUCK. THE CAR CAME TO STOP AFTER JUMPING INTO OTHER SIDE OF THE STREET. NO OTHER CAR WAS INVOLVED. MOST OF THE DAMAGE TO THE CAR WAS TO THE FRONT WHEELS, FRONT UNDER BODY DUE TO IMPACT WITH THE CENTER ROAD DIVIDER. ALL AIRBAGS WERE DEPLOYED EXCEPT FOR THE PASSENGER. SHE WAS ALONE IN THE CAR. THE POLICE AND EMD WERE AT THE SCENE AFTER 10 -15 MINS AS SOMEONE HAD ALREADY CALLED 911. I WAS AT THE SCEEN AS THE LOCATION WAS 10 MINS FROM MY HOME. THE POLICE REPORT IS STILL DUE AS I NOTIFY YOU. INSURANCE DECLARED TOTAL LOSS. MY WIFE HAD MINOR INJURIES DUE TO AIR BAGS. WE HOPE SOMEONE CAN FIND ANSWERS FOR THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS. 1) DID LIGHTING CAUSE ANY ELECTRICAL INTERFERENCE WITH VEHICLE ELECTRONICS WHICH MAY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE ACCIDENT ? 2) WHY DID AIR BAGS DEPLOY IF THE WHEELS HIT THE CENTER DIVIDER . OR WHAT WAS THE CAUSE OF AIRBAGS DEPLOYMENT ?

Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
Windshield wiper motor failure. There was a GM safety recall (15789) on the 2013 Chevy Volt but my VIN wasn't included in the recall. It seems like it should've been as I'm having the same issue as other 2013 Chevy Volt's had with windshield wiper motor failure.
THE A-PILLARS ARE WIDE AND OFTEN IN MY FIELD OF VISION. I HAVE HAD 3 CLOSE CALLS WITH HEAD ON COLLISIONS WHILE ON CURVING ROADS, AND LAST WEEK I NEARLY HIT A PEDESTRIAN AND HER DOG AS I WAS MAKING A LEFT TURN WHILE THEY WERE IN THE CROSS WALK. *TR

Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
The drivers side front seatbelt pretensioner assembly contains a braided steel cable. The cable, through normal use, has become damaged to the point that individual wires have broken free from the crimped connector. The damaged wires of the cable have penetrated through the plastic sheath covering the cable causing a needle sharp poking hazard when reaching one’s hand toward the seat back adjustment lever. My wife had a minor laceration to her finger and I was also poked when trying to identify the cause. Upon further inspection I found that approximately 80 percent of the diameter of the pretensioner cable had broken free from the crimped connector. In the event of a collision, the cable would likely break free from the seatbelt, possibly causing serious injury to the driver. I tried to obtain a replacement part through the GM dealer parts network, but the part is listed as discontinued and unavailable. This leaves the vehicle unsafe in the event of an accident. The damaged components are available for inspection. The vehicle has not been inspected by anyone but myself. There were no warning lamps or symptoms of the problem prior the the injury. I am the original owner of the vehicle and it has never been involved in a collision. The vehicle has been properly maintained and is used only for personal transportation.
Passenger Airbags failed to engage when occupied during accident, drivers side activated. Results in injured passenger

Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
ON SEPT. 5TH 2018 I HIT THE CENTER ISLAND WHILE TURNING ON THE CITY STREET AT ABOUT 15MPH. THE IMPACT WAS SO SLIGHT THAT THE AIR BAGS DIDN'T EVEN DEPLOY. I WAS ABLE TO GET IT TO THE DEALERS ON IT'S OWN POWER. MY INSURANCE COMPANY SENT THEIR APPRAISER ,JEREMY , TO INSPECT THE DAMAGE. I HAD TO GET SOME ITEMS OUT OF MY CAR BEFORE THAT. THE MECHANIC HAD THE CAR ON THE RACK SO HE COULD SHOW ME. THE ONLY DAMAGE I READILY NOTICED WAS THE RADIATORS WERE CRUSHED, A 2 1/2" SQUARE FRAME CROSS MEMBER HAD A 1 1/2" DENT WHERE IT HAD IMPACTED THE ISLAND , AND SOME PANELS- NOTICEABLY THE FRONT UNDERSIDE AND DRIVER SIDE FRONT WHEEL WELL WERE DAMAGED. LATER JEREMY CALLED ME AND TOLD ME THE CAR WAS A TOTAL LOSS.HE SAID THE ENTIRE FRAME WAS BENT OUT OF SHAPE. I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT. IN HIS REPORT HE ITEMIZED THE PARTS BUT ABOUT THE PROPULSION SYSTEM HE WROTE, CONDITIONS EXIST THAT THE ELECTRICAL MOTORS COULD START UP THE GAS ENGINE AND FLOOD THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT WITH CO. WELL IF THAT'S THE CASE, WHY DON'T THEY SIMPLY REPLACE THE COMPONENTS THAT WOULD LEAD TO THAT CONDITION OR IF IT WAS INHERENT IN THE CAR, WHY DOESN'T THE DOT DECLARE THE CAR A ROAD HAZZARD AND RECALL ALL VEHICLES? LN CONSUMER REPORTS THEY DECLARED THE VOLT SCORED 5 OUT OF A POSSIBLE 5 RATING ON COLLISION SURVIVAL. WHAT? THE CAR RUNNING AT 15 MPH GETTING TOTALLED BY HITTING A BUMP IS A 5? I THINK MR. JEREMY IS PADDING ALL HIS ESTIMATES AND SHOULD HAVE AN INDEPENDENT APPRAISER REVIEW THE CAR. EITHER HE IS LYING OR THE CAR IS ACTUALLY A LEMON. I WOULD LIKE YOUR ADVICE ON WHAT LEGAL COURSE I SHOULD TAKE.

MY VOLT REAR TAIL LIGHT IS FULL OF WATER. DEALER TOLD ME NOTHING THEY CAN DO. THIS CAR HAS NEVER BEEN HIT, BUMPED, OR EVEN BEEN INTO A CAR WASH. FEEL THIS IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND I CANNOT GET ANYONE TO LISTEN TO ME. I SEE A LOT OF PEOPLE ON LINE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM.
