2016 Chrysler 300 Electrical Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the electrical system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Electrical reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Have been having power steering problems over the past few years. Started by displaying a shift to park message while driving, my car would then lose power and shut down completely and power steering would lock up. Have taken to dealerships and independent mechanics and was told it was the wiring harness which they repaired several times and the car continued to have the issue. Approximately 3 months ago I was driving 55mph on highway when suddenly without any warning, the power steering failed and locked up making it very difficult to turn the wheel to get the vehicle off the highway safely. The power steering locking up put myself, my passengers and other drivers at risk bc I had no control over the steering. When I got the vehicle off of the highway a message repeatedly coming on and off saying “service power steering “ and another message saying power steering assist off service system. I was able to get the vehicle home, however the steering was extremely difficult especially in turns which is a major safety concern increasing a risk of an accident. I have done a lot of research about this issue and have found that there are numerous others with the same issue and same make/model as my 2016 Chrysler 300 C. I took the vehicle to another independent mechanic and they told me they couldn’t figure out what is wrong with it. I made another appointment with another mechanic and when I attempted to drive it “manually” as I had to do when it initially started doing this, the electric power steering has now completely locked up and the wheel is not functional at all and power steering has completely failed. This is not only a huge inconvenience but a serious safety hazard and should be investigated by the manufacturer.

The contact's son owns a 2016 Chrysler 300. The contact stated that the horn was inoperable. Additionally, the contact stated while her son was driving 60-65 MPH, the vehicle lost power steering functionality inadvertently. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the driver was able to veer to the side of the road. The contact stated that the driver turned off and restarted the vehicle, and the power steering became functional. The contact stated that the driver was able to drive to the residence. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the failure could not be duplicated, and the contact was referred to the dealer. The dealer was contacted, and an appointment was scheduled for a diagnostic test. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 31,000.

Main Fuel Pump and accompanied electrical connect. The fuel pump and electrical wiring harness is available upon request. My safety was at risk due to a faulty electrical connection inside the fuel tank. My vehicle made a loud hmming sound at a stop sign, upon continuing forward the vehicle shut off randomly. Upon inspection, the fuel was not sending to the engine. We bought a new fuel pump and replaced at the side of the road. When inspecting the OEM fuel pump and accompanied electrical connection, we noticed over heated wiring and melts plastic inside the fuel tank on the underside of the fuel pump, as well as burnt connections on the outside of the fuel tank on the tip side of the fuel pump. We have pictures to support. No warning signs, signals, or lights were present at the time of failure. When purchasing new fuel pump, there were no instructions for replacement of electrical connections. The only indication we found as to what was happening was through public forums online, showing the electrical wiring was faulty and needed replacing with the alternative wiring harness due to wiring (hot wire, b+) being located too close to the grounding wiring causing it to burn amd/or arch creating a problem with which could cause fire and explosion. No information was readily available nor have we received any information on potential catastrophic injury or failure.

I was sitting at a stop light waiting to make a left turn when the electrical power steering randomly failed. This issue made it near impossible to turn the car and caused me to almost crash into a light pole when I tried to make the left turn. I then made an attempt to turn into a parking lot to get off the road almost causing me to wreck the car a second time. I have been told by multiple mechanics that this electrical power steering failure is not a common issue with newer vehicles. I want to submit this claim to make it known this make and model has this issue

WHEN ENGAGING THE TURN SIGNAL (PARTICULARLY LEFT TURNS) THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS ENGAGE. HAVE ATTEMPTED "WIGGLING" THIS COMBINATION CONTROL LEVER, WHICH HAS A SMALL DEGREE OF PLAY WITHIN ITS RANGES OF MOTION. SOMETIMES THIS IS EFFECTIVE, BUT USUALLY THIS IS NOT. HAVE ALSO ATTEMPTED POSITIONING THE "PLAY" LEVEL TO EACH OF ITS NATURAL LIMITS. OCCASIONALLY THIS WORKS, BUT WITHIN A FEW TURN CYCLES IT REVERTS BACK TO ENGAGING THE WIPERS. VEHICLE IS IN MOTION WHEN THIS HAPPENS, MAKING A TURN. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR OVER A YEAR.

WHILE VEHICLE IS ON AND RUNNING "SERVICE AIR BAG SYSTEM" MESSAGE RANDOMLY APPEARS AND DISAPPEARS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN PARK OR IN MOTION. SERVICE AIR BAG INDICATOR LIGHT ALSO ILLUMINATES RANDOMLY AFTER MESSAGE IS DISPLAYED AND THEN GOES OUT AFTER A RANDOM AMOUNT OF TIME HAS ELAPSED. TOOK VEHICLE TO LOCAL CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THAT IT MAYBE BE ONE OF SEVERAL KNOWN ISSUES THAT THEY ARE AWARE OF BUT NO RECALLS HAVE BEEN ISSUED ON ANY OF THE POSSIBLE SAFETY ISSUES THAT MAYBE CAUSING THE NOTIFICATION. THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DO ANYTHING TO THE VEHICLE TO FIX THE PROBLEM FOR SURE AND GUARANTEE THE AIR BAGS ACTUALLY WILL WORK WHEN NEEDED.

I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 50MPH AND THINGS STARTED SHUTTING DOWN LIKE THE RADIO AND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL SAID THE CAR WAS GOING INTO POWER SAVING MODE. I HAD ABOUT 5 MILES TO MY DESTINATION AND MY CAR STALLED RIGHT BEFORE I GOT THERE BUT I KEPT UP MY SPEED AND WAS ABLE TO COAST IN. I TRIED STARTING IT JUST TO SEE AND GOT NOTHING. TOW TRUCK CAME ABOUT AN HOUR LATER AND I WAS ABLE TO START IT TO BACK IT UP BUT WHEN I TURNED IT OFF, IT WOULD NOT START AGAIN. EVEN BEING A WOMAN I KNEW THIS WAS NOT A CASE OF DEAD BATTERY AS IT HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING. MY CAR WAS TOWED TO MY MECHANIC AND SURE ENOUGH, THE ALTERNATOR WAS BAD ON A 4 YEAR OLD CHRYSLER WITH APPROXIMATELY ONLY 30,000 MILES! APPARENTLY THERE IS A RECALL ALREADY ON MY SAME YEAR/MAKE/MODEL HOWEVER "SUPPOSEDLY" THE HEMI'S WEREN'T AFFECTED.
