1996 Dodge Avenger Airbags Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the airbag system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Airbags reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights. Every record below is an owner-reported complaint about the 1996 Dodge Avenger submitted to NHTSA — not a confirmed defect, not a recall and not a manufacturer bulletin. 10 reports on file name it.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

VEHICLE HIT A TREE HEAD-ON AT ABOUT 35 MPH (EST.). NEITHER THE DRIVER SIDE NOR THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG DEPLOYED. PASSENGER'S HEAD STRUCK AND SHATTERED WINDSHIELD. DRIVER'S FACE STRUCK STEERING WHEEL CAUSING DAMAGE TO MOUTH AND SHOULDER. EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. AMAZING NO ONE WAS KILLED OR SERIOUSLY INJURED. ALSO, I WOULD NOTICE THAT IF I WAS TRAVELING OVER ABOUT 40 MPH, THE CAR WOULD SHAKE WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. CAR WOULD SOMETIMES STALL WHEN STOPPED. SOMETIMES I WOULD HAVE TO TAKE THE CAR OUT OF PARK AND PUT IT BACK INTO PARK BEFORE IT WOULD START. ALSO THE PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT SEEMED TO NOT BE FULLY SEALED AS IT ALWAYS HAD CONDENSATION INSIDE. NOTICED THE PASSENGER AIRBAG SEEMED TO BE STICKING OUT AND THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT WAS DIFFICULT TO OPEN. I WONDER IF THIS CAR HAD BEEN WRECKED BEFORE I BOUGHT IT. I KNOW I WAS NOT TOLD IT HAD BEEN. I JUST RECENTLY LEARNED THEY DO NOT MAKE AVENGERS ANYMORE. IS THERE A REASON FOR THIS. ARE THEY DANGEROUS. COULD SOMETHING HAVE CAUSED THIS CRASH OTHER THAN THE DRIVING OF THE DRIVER. I WILL BE HAPPY TO PROVIDE MY VIN NUMBER AS SOON AS I CAN GET IT. CAR IS IN STORAGE NOW.*AK
