What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2006 Dodge Dakota, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2006 Dodge Dakota. The contact stated that while her son was at a complete stop at the red traffic light, the driver's side air bag deployed unexpectedly, and the driver noticed that there was white smoke and dark smoke coming from the air bag. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the air bag caught on fire. The contact stated that the driver attempted to exit the vehicle, but the doors remained locked and the vehicle failed to shift to park(P) for two minutes. The driver was able to shift to neutral(N). The driver broke the front passenger's side window glass and exited the vehicle. A sheriff deputy parked his vehicle behind the driver's vehicle to prevent the vehicle from moving. The contact stated that the air bag fire burned the entire steering wheel and the steering column, the windshield and the front driver's side seat. The fire was extinguished with four extinguishers and with the assistance of the fire department. A fire department report was filed. A police report was filed but the contact did not have the police report information available. The contact's son sustained intrusion of metal shards in his right leg and bruises on the stomach, arm, and chest. The contact's son also sustained migraine, insomnia, panic attacks, and PTSD. The contact's son did not receive medical assistance. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The dealer then towed the vehicle to their location and took pictures of the failure. The dealer then towed the vehicle back to the contact's residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and denied assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 221,000.
The contact owned a 2006 Dodge Dakota. The contact stated while driving at 45 MPH, the vehicle was involved in a no-fault head-on collision. The vehicle was damaged to the front of the vehicle and the driver's side of the vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard. The vehicle was deemed a total loss by the insurance company. The local police and paramedics were at the scene. No police reports were filed, however, the report number was unavailable. The contact was transported to the local hospital. The contact sustained injuries included a facial fracture, traumatic brain injury, broken right eye socket, crushed bladder, injury to both feet (toes), and impaired speech. The contact stated that this was the two-year anniversary of the crash. In addition, the contact was continuing to receive physical and speech therapy. In addition, the contact referenced an unknown recall in which the air bags were replaced in the vehicle four months prior to the crash. After driving on the interstate highway for a couple hours from Phoenix, Arizona I noticed that the left turn signal started malfunctioning, and the right signal flashed instead. After several hours of driving, noticed that sometimes the right signal only flashed 3 or 4 times when turning on the right indicator. I also noticed that the emergency flashers would usually blink once or twice left, then switch to right only. While stopped, I verified that the right front and rear turn signals were actually blinking as indicated on the dash. The next day however the problem was gone. I drove the car on the interstate again for several hours, without any issues.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.

See attached document for complaint.
THE TRUCK HAS VERY LITTLE POWER PROVIDED DUE TO THE TRANSMISSION AFTER COMING TO A STOP. THIS ONLY HAPPENS DURING WARM WEATHER. DURING THE COLDER MONTHS OF WINTER THE TRANSMISSION OPERATES NORMALLY. From owner reports, verbatim
I was going to work and the transmission started slipping when I had cruise control on, and then when I got to a stop light my truck started revving and wouldn't move. When i put it in neutral it wouldn't roll either. It just kept on revving and screeching. So i out back into drive and it jerks. Also my trucks rear end locked up and wouldn't roll in neutral while the truck is on. You have to keep the truck off and then put it into neutral to roll it.
WHILE EMERGENCY BRAKING GOING DOWN ST.HWY THE ABS SYSTEM ACTIVATED AND THE PETAL WENT TO THE FLOOR LOSING BRAKING AND I THEN PUSHED ON PARKING BRAKE TO SLOW DOWN AND MOVED TO SHOULDER. Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
MY 2006 DAKOTA FILLER TUBE SPITS THE GAS BACK OUT ONTO THE PAVEMENT WHEN TRYING TO REFUEL. IT TAKES A VERY LONG TIME TO REFUEL AND I UNDERSTAND MANY CHRSYLER PRODUCTS ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. THERE IS A RECALL ON 2005 DURANGO C OR THE SAME PROBLEM. WHY IS THERE NO RECALL FOR THE DAKOTAS?
CAN NOT PUT FUEL IN THE TANK NO MATTER HOW MUCH FUEL IS IN IT. PUMP KICKS OFF AFTER ABOUT 25-35 CENTS OF FUEL IS DISPENSED. FUEL OCCASIONALLY SPRAYS OUT OF THE FILLER NECK. CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP CLAIMS FUEL TANK NEEDS REPLACED AT APPROXIMATELY $1500 MY COST.
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO MY MECHANIC BECAUSE MY DASH LIGHT STOPPED WORKING. HE SAID THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND THE RECALL SHOULD COVER 2006 MODELS. WHEN WE RUN THE VIN NUMBER IT DOES NOT SHOW FOR MY VEHICLE BUT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR ALL OTHER 2006 DODGE DURANGO BECAUSE IT IS A FIRE RISK. CAN YOU PLEASE SEE IF THERE IS ANY WAY THAT MY VEHICLE JUST GOT MISSED.
IN USING SIGNAL LIGHTS, TURN LEFT SIGNAL ON TO TURN AND THE RIGHT DASH SIGNAL INDICATOR AS WELL AS RIGHT SIGNAL LIGHT FLASH. IF I MOVE THE TILT STEERING POSITION UP AND THEN BACK DOWN THE LIGHTS FUNCTION PROPERLY. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES. IT SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING IN THE STEERING WHEEL IS RUBBING WHENEVER ONE TURNS THE WHEEL. THE PREVIOUS OWNER BOUGHT THE TRUCK NEW AND IT HAPPENED TO HIM SEVERAL TIMES AS WELL. ALSO THE BALL JOINTS WERE ALL REPLACED BY PREVIOUS OWNER AT LESS THAN 30,000 MILES. NOW AT 55,000 MILES THE STRUTS, SHOCK ABSORBERS, REAR STABILIZER LINKS AND QUITE POSSIBLY SWAY BAR LINKS FRONT AND REAR NEED TO BE REPLACED. *TR
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
THIS ONE SIMPLE PART EFFECTS SO MUCH AND IT IS UNSAFE THAT THIS PART AFFECTS SO MUCH. YOU GUYS OFFER IT BUT ITS CLOSE TO 1400$. WHY IS IT SO MUCH? THIS WOULD BE VEHICLE NUMBER 2 WITHIN A YEAR OF EACH OTHER HAVING SOMETHING BAD GO WRONG IT MAKES IT UNSAFE TO DRIVE. IT EFFECTS MY FUEL MILEAGE, BRAKES, SPEDO AND TACH GO CRAZY, HEADLIGHTS FLASH, PROBLEMS WITH COMMUNICATING WITH TRANSMISSION, AND IT KEADS TO THE FRONT CONTROLE MODULE. MY CRUISE STOPPED WORKING AND IT WORKED BEFORE. MY KEY FOB HAS ISSUES UNLOCKING AND LOCKING TAKES LIKE 10 BUTTON PRESSES TO WORK. I LIKE YOUR TRUCKS BUT THIS MAKES IT UNSAFE I CANT EVEN LET MY KID RIDE IN MY TRUCK WITH ME
NUMEROUS FRONT END REPAIRS TO NO AVAIL. STILL HAVING STEERING ISSUES AND LOUD BANGING WHEN TURNING. WIPERS COMING ON AT RANDOM, BATTERY LIGHT ON IN SPITE OF NEW BATTERY AND ALTERNATOR. WE HAVE SPENT OVER $4000 IN REPAIRS ON FROM END AND 2 WIPER MOTORS. THE WIPERS STILL WILL NOT WORK PROPERLY.

I PURCHASED A 2006 DODGE DAKOTA ON JULY 2, 2014 FROM CROWSON AUTO WORLD, 541 HWY 15, PO BOX 889, LOUISVILLE, MS 39339. UPON GETTING THIS VEHICLE HOME I DISCOVERED THAT THE SEAT BELTS WERE NOT PROPERLY WORKING. ON THREE OCCASIONS I RETURNED VEHICLE TO DEALER AND EACH TIME DEALER FAILED TO REPAIR THIS VEHICLE. I HAD VEHICLE INSPECTED AT OTHER DEALERS AND FOUND THAT "SEAT BELT LITE AND CHIME DO NOT WORK" AND "INSTRUMENT SAFETY LIGHTS ARE INOPERABLE". I NEED HELP TO CONVINCE THE DEALER THAT IT IS NOT LEGAL TO SALE VEHICLES WITH DEFECTIVE SAFETY EQUIPMENT. *TR

2006 DODGE DAKOTA QUAD CAB 4X4...POWER DOOR LOCK ACTUATORS HAVE FAILED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED A TOTAL OF SIX TIMES SINCE 11/2008 (ALL FOUR DOORS ONCE AND THE REAR DOORS TWICE). PROBLEMS STARTED AT 35,000 MILES WITH FRONT DRIVER SIDE ACTUATOR, THEN PROCEEDED TO FRONT PASSENGER SEVERAL MONTHS LATER, THEN REAR DRIVER SIDE, REAR PASSENGER SIDE, FRONT DRIVER SIDE, REAR DRIVER SIDE. MILEAGE AT LAST FAILURE: 82,000. VEHICLE NOT SUBJECTED TO EXTREME CONDITIONS. CITY/HIGHWAY DRIVING ONLY (NO OFF ROAD). *TR
I NOTICED THAT THE WINDSHILED WIPERS WOULD COME ON BY IT SELF, AS TIME WENT ON THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS AND STEREO WOULD GO OFF FOR ABOUT 4 SECONDS; LATER THE HORN WOULD BLOW AND THE WIPE FLUID WOULD SQUIRT, THEN I WOULD GET A AWEFUL SHOCK WHEN I TOUCH THE GEAR SHIFTER. ALL THESE OCCUR WHENEVER I START THE TRUCK AFTER SITTING FOR MORE THAN 7 HOURS, THEN AT ANY GIVEN TIME WHILE DRIVING WITH AT LEAST 4-5 TIMES AND EVER INCREASING AS MILEAGE TRAVELLING.
