What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2016 Ford Expedition, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
When merging on the highway in the rain the vehicle locked up on me and almost killed me. I could have been seriously injured I could not stop the car and it slid along the highway at high speeds . Luckily was able to get to the shoulder
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, a burning odor was detected. The contact later received notification of NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 22V150000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic) and 22V648000 (Visibility, Electrical System). The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the front blower motor connector and resistor needed to be replaced; however, the parts were not covered under the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the front blower motor connector was previously replaced; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that only the brake master cylinder and front blower motor assembly would be replaced free of charge under recall. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while reversing, the rear-view camera displayed a blank screen. The message “Camera Unavailable” was displayed. The contact later received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V572000 (Back Over Prevention). The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and the recall repair was completed. The contact was informed that the rear-view camera was inoperable after the recall repair was performed. The contact was informed that a diagnostic test was needed, and a diagnostic fee was provided. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was filed. The contact was referred to the dealer for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000.
I am filing this complaint regarding an unresolved and potentially dangerous safety defect involving the rearview camera system on my Ford vehicle, which was presented to Wade Ford Auto Dealership and Service in Smyrna, Georgia for a rear camera recall repair. I brought my vehicle, a 2016 Ford Expedition, to Wade Ford for recall service related to the rearview camera. Wade Ford retained my vehicle for approximately one week. When I picked up the vehicle on or about [insert pickup date], I discovered that the rear camera issue had not been corrected. The rear camera image remains dark, unclear, visually deficient, and unsafe, creating a continuing hazard when the vehicle is operated in reverse. This is not a cosmetic or convenience issue. A defective rearview camera materially impairs rear visibility and increases the risk of collision, property damage, or injury. Federal safety authorities have recognized rearview camera failures as safety concerns because blank, distorted, inverted, delayed, frozen, or unclear images can reduce the driver’s view behind the vehicle and increase crash risk. NHTSA recall materials for Ford rearview camera defects describe the safety consequence as reduced rear visibility and increased crash risk when the rearview camera displays a distorted, inverted, or blank image. (static.nhtsa.gov) After I raised the unresolved condition, Ford claimed or suggested that the issue may be due to an aftermarket radio allegedly installed in the vehicle. I dispute that explanation. I have not replaced the rear camera, and I do not accept Ford’s unsupported attempt to attribute an unresolved safety recall defect to an aftermarket component without competent inspection findings, diagnostic proof, or written documentation. If Ford or Wade Ford contends that an aftermarket radio is the cause, then I request that they provide a written technical explanation, diagnostic results, photographs, technician notes.
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
The failed components are called "cam phasers." It is a known problem with the Ford 3.5 Ecoboost Engine (that even Ford is aware of). The cam phasers can fail, causing the timing chain to fail at any moment. They rattle upon startup of a cold engine. The failure of the original engineering is causing owners of this vehicle, along with the F150 and others, to have to spend anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000 in order to replace these. The problem has been confirmed by the Ford dealer. In order to visually examine the cam phasers, it requires something like 10+ hours to open the engine. You do not receive a warning light to replace cam phasers. It is merely an audio diagnosis. Ford SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE for replacing these free of charge and replacing them with the newer versions of cam phasers, which apparently don't fail. Driving around with rattling cam phasers can leave you stranded!
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while reversing at an undisclosed speed, the rearview camera was intermittently inoperative. While driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed, and there was an abnormal sound coming from the engine compartment. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V572000 (Back Over Prevention); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine fan needed to be replaced; however, parts were not available for the repairs. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was unknown.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
My expedition started stuttering and the speedometer, started fluctuating speeds which would also cause my cruise control to turn off. Then the speedometer quit working altogether and so did the odometer. If I turned the truck off and restarted it, it would reset everything for a few miles then it would start all over again. I went to the Ford dealership and got it fixed. It cost $2500. Later doing research, I discovered this is a problem with this transmission and can be very dangerous as the truck can downshift dramatically which our did once. If I’ve been on ice or pulling my trailer, it could’ve been catastrophic. I feel like this should be a recall. I also feel like Ford should have to pay for this.

Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that the blower motor functioned intermittently, turning on and off unexpectedly. The contact stated that the A/C functioned as intended during the cooler months but was intermittently inoperable in the warmer months, requiring that the wires that were overheating be repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V648000 (Visibility, Electrical System); however, the recall repair failed to fix the issue. The dealer was notified of the failure, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle exceeded the 12-month or 3,000-mile limitation. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
while driving on the highway my vehicle shut down and service lamp came on and while drifting tried to put transmission in neutral and restart but had to come to complete stop to restart engine in park. I was in third lane and had no warning before shut down and could not get to the shoulder. (almost got hit trying). I reported to the dealer and they said there was no fault codes stored. I was driving to work on a 4 lane street a week later and again it shut down without previous warning again and had to crash up onto the curb to get off street to again restart in park. dealer said again no codes and could not get it to duplicate problem after driving. It happened two more times so i looked into it myself and i read online that the Throttle body is the likely issue. i returned and paid to have the throttle body replaced. they said would not guarantee the issue would be resolved. it has been months and have had no issues since i had it replaced. They charged me $563.31 not including tax. I can not believe that you have to put a vehicle in park when it stalls to begin with but i also can not believe this issue was never recalled since it is a major safety issue and see lots of people and complained of the same issue.
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact pulled over and restarted the vehicle, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who determined that the throttle body needed to be replaced. The contact replaced the throttle body; however, while driving, the vehicle made an abnormally loud sound. The contact inspected the vehicle and discovered that the throttle body hose clamp had detached. The contact reconnected the hose clamp, but the failure persisted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that there was no recall associated with the VIN. The failure mileage was approximately 85,605.
Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
I receive a recall 22S56 for the climate control blower motor it was replaced under warranty on 12/17/2024 about a year latter I noticed blower stopped working on 12/13/2025 coming from San Francisco because visibility was affected when defroster stopped working, then I called dealer on 12/23 /25 and they gave me an appointment for them see the vehicle, I asked then to repaired under recall warranty and dealer denied it. dealer saying is something else o not related. I called manufacturer stating the safety concern that defroster been affected because blower not working and they said its been a year and they can not help, now blower some times works, other times does not work or works very slow. Ford manufacturer open a case number CXH-XXX. I am reporting for Ford to extend warranty on the recall. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
Airbag light came on and has since went off. The left buttons on the steering wheel intermittingly work both leading to a clockspring issue. There is a recall for 2016 F250 clockspring due to airbag issue and the 2016 Expedition uses the same part number clockspring. I think this recall should add other Ford models that use the exact same defective part in question.
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving approximately 30 MPH, he became aware that the air bag warning light was illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed and determined that the clockspring needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The contact had received a recall letter for his 2016 Ford F-250 for NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V337000 (Air Bags). The independent mechanic advised the contact that the 2016 Ford Expedition used the same clockspring as the 2016 Ford F-250. The failure mileage was approximately 127,000.

Other / unspecified
Reports whose component NHTSA recorded as unknown, or that do not map to one of the categories above.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 MPH and hauling a trailer attached to the tow hitch, the trailer suddenly detached from the vehicle. The trailer hitch had fractured due to extensive rust. The dealer was contacted and informed about the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and opened a case. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to file a complaint. The failure mileage was approximately 129,000.
I was fastening my nephew in his carseat to get ready to leave and as I was buckling the croch part the one side was fastened and went to buckle otherwise and was pulling the buckle up to the clips to fasten and the fastened one came out. Does not stay latched while fastening otherwise with just a little pull on otherwise it unhooks. This happened while in home and buckling up to leave.

Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that on several occasions, while in reverse(R), the contact observed a warning chime and a "Steering Assist Fault" message was displayed, and the steering wheel became firm. The contact stated that on other occasions while driving at various speeds, the steering wheel became stiff. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering gear needed to be replaced. The contact related the failure to an unknown recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.
Steering wheel is loose and wobbly as if it will fall off. I noticed that Ford issued a recall in March 2018 for this problem (see below) however it does not include my 2016 Ford Expedition that is having the exact same issue. DEARBORN, Mich., March 14, 2018 – Ford Motor Company is issuing two safety recalls in North America. Details are as follows: Select 2014-18 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles for loose steering wheel bolts that could lead to a steering wheel detaching from steering column Ford is issuing a safety recall in North America for approximately 1.3 million 2014-18 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles for potentially loose steering wheel bolts that could result in a steering wheel detaching from the steering column. In affected vehicles, the steering wheel bolt may not maintain torque, allowing the bolt to loosen over time, and if not serviced, a steering wheel could potentially detach and lead to a loss of steering control and increased risk of a crash. Ford is aware of two accidents with one injury allegedly related to this condition. Affected vehicles include: 2014-17 Ford Fusion vehicles built at Flat Rock Assembly Plant, Aug. 6, 2013 to Feb. 29, 2016 2014-18 Ford Fusion vehicles built at Hermosillo Assembly Plant, July 25, 2013 to March 5, 2018 2014-18 Lincoln MKZ vehicles built at Hermosillo Assembly Plant, July 25, 2013 to March 5, 2018 The recall involves approximately 1,378,637 vehicles in North America with 1,301,986 in the United States and federalized territories, 62,479 in Canada and 14,172 in Mexico. The Ford reference number for this recall is 18S08. Dealers will replace the steering wheel bolt on the vehicle with a longer bolt with more robust thread engagement and larger nylon patch placed properly for proper torque retention— at no cost to customers.

Heating & air conditioning
Reports naming the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system.
From owner reports, verbatim
STARTED THE CAR TO GET HEATER GOING AND WARMED UP AND STARTED BUCKLING MY KIDS UP IN THEIR CAR SEATS. THAT'S WHEN I STARTED TO SMELL AN ELECTRICAL BURNING SMELL COMING THROUGH THE VENTS. I TURNED THE HEATER OFF AND THE SMELL GOT STRONGER. I TURNED THE HEATER BACK ON AND SMELLED IT EVEN WORSE. I IMMEDIATELY SWITCHED IT TO AC INSTEAD OF HEAT AND THEN I STARTED TO NOTICE SMOKE COMING THROUGH THE AIR VENTS. I IMMEDIATELY TURNED THE CAR OFF. THE SMOKE CONTINUED TO BELLO OUT OF THE AIR VENTS. AS SOON AND THE INTERIOR LIGHTS TURNED OFF I NOTICED A GLOW UNDER THE PASSENGER DASH DOWN BY THE CORNER OF THE FLOORBOARD. WHEN I WENT AROUND TO LOOK TO SEE WHAT WAS GLOWING I NOTICED THERE WAS A FIRE DOWN IN THAT CORNER AND IT WAS ALREADY BIG ENOUGH THAT I COULDN'T BLOW IT OUT NO MATTER HOW HARD I BLEW. I AM THANKFUL THAT I KEEP A FIRE EXTINGUISHER IN MY GARAGE AND WAS ABLE TO QUICKLY PUT IT OUT. I NORMALLY STRAP MY KIDS IN AND TURN ON A MOVIE FOR THEM WHILE I GO BACK IN THE HOUSE AND SPEND AROUND 3 TO 5 MINUTES GETTING THE KIDS WATERS, MAKING SURE THE DIAPER BAG IS STOCKED, AND BASIC STUFF LIKE THAT. HAD THAT FIRE STARTED AFTER I WALKED BACK IN THE HOUSE I AM SURE THAT I WOULD HAVE LOST MY KIDS IN A BLAZE, STRAPPED IN TO CAR SEATS, THAT DAY. IT WAS THANKSGIVING EVE. I FOUND OUT THAT THE BLOWER FAN FOR THE VENTS IS WHAT SPARKED UP AND CAUGHT FIRE. THERE ARE NO RECALLS BY FORD FOR THIS AND I HAVE FOUND OUT THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE THIS HAS HAPPENED TO. THIS IS AN ENORMOUS SAFETY HAZARD AND I AM SHOCKED THAT IT HAS GONE IGNORED BY FORD. DOES AN ACTUAL DEATH NEED TO TAKE PLACE BEFORE THEY SET IT RIGHT? BECAUSE I DID JUST BUY IT; THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE FAN. BUT THE FLOORBOARD IN THAT CORNER IS ALL BURNT UP AND AM NOW QUESTIONING WHAT MORE SERIOUS DAMAGE IS IN THAT DASH THAT I CAN'T SEE. LIKE THE AIRBAG OR OTHER ELECTRONIC WIRING THAT MAY NOW BE AT RISK.*DT*JB
WE DETECTED A BURNT RUBBER SMELL WHILE DRIVING ON A SURFACE STREET (WITH A/C ON). THE A/C SUDDENLY QUIT. WE PULLED OVER TO TURN SUV OFF AND BACK ON AGAIN HOPING A/C WOULD RETURN. A/C DID NOT RETURN, SMOKE BEGAN BILLOWING OUT OF A/C VENTS. STOPPED AT A GAS STATION AND TURNED OFF SUV. THE SMOKE FROM THE VENTS GOT THICKER AND LARGE FLAMES BEGAN COMING OUT UNDERNEATH THE DASH. HUSBAND RAN IN TO GAS STATION AND GOT A FIRE EXTINGUISHER AND PUT OUT THE FIRE. FIRE KEPT RESTARTING (THE PARKING LIGHTS WERE ON THOUGH THE CAR WAS OFF). HUSBAND FINALLY HAD TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY TO KEEP FIRE FROM RESTARTING. THE A/C/HEATER BLOWER THEN FELL OUT ONTO THE FRONT PASSENGER FLOOR-MAT BURNED TO A CRISP.

Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
One of the anchor points for car seats in the 3rd row fell off when we tried to attach a car seat to the anchor point. We have owned the vehicle since 2022 and have not tried to use that anchor until now. There was no damage to the vehicle to cause this.
When using the power folding third row option appropriately, the seat got stuck on something and snapped off two of the rear seat female seatbelt connectors. This is a huge safety concern, knowing that these connectors can snap off, when we use them to secure our children.

Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
Bought the 2016 vehicle January 2017. Shortly after purchase I noticed slight bubbling in the paint on the edges of the hood and especially the bottom of the lift gate. It has progressed over the years and now the paint is coming off- a large piece off the front hood and all along the bottom of the lift gate. Ford has no recalls on it yet, but it's a well cared for vehicle, garaged at night and when not in use during the day. The paint should not be bubbling or coming off. Thank you- Suzanne
VEHICLE SPONTANEOUSLY STARTED ON FIRE. IT HAD BEEN TURNED OFF AT A RESTAURANT IN PARKING AREA. IT HAD BEEN DRIVEN ABOUT 3 MILES IN TOWN JUST BEFORE THE FIRE. THE VEHICLE HAD LOW MILEAGE, APPROXIMATELY 50000 MILES. NO KNOW MECHANICAL OR OTHER ISSUES, SERVICED REGULARLY.

Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS DO NOT ADEQUATELY LIGHT UP THE ROAD AHEAD. YOU CAN BARELY SEE ANYTHING ON THE ROAD IN FRONT OF THE CAR. I MUST USE THE HIGH BEAMS IF I WISH TO SEE THE ROAD AHEAD OF ME. I HAVE HEARD THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH MANY EXPEDITIONS. THIS OCCURS WHEN THE CAR IS IN MOTION. IT OCCURS WHETHER THE CAR IS ON THE HIGHWAY OR CITY STREET.
SINCE THE PURCHASE OF MY NEW EXPEDITION I HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH THE POOR PERFORMANCE OF THE HEADLIGHTS. THE EXPEDITION HAS THE PROJECTOR STYLE HEADLIGHTS AND THE LIGHT OUTPUT IS TERRIBLE. DRIVING IN THE WINTER MONTHS WITH RAIN OR SNOW THE VISIBILITY IS NEAR ZERO. I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER THE DAY AFTER I PURCHASED THE CAR, SPRING 2016, AND THEY MADE SOME ADJUSTMENTS. HOWEVER NOW THAT IT IS GETTING DARK EARLIER I FIND MYSELF DRIVING IN THE DARK MORE OFTEN AND THE VEHICLE IS NEAR UNSAFE. I FEAR THAT I WILL NOT SEE AN OBJECT OR ANIMAL IN THE ROAD. THE CAR HAS BEEN BACK AT THE DEALER FOR OVER A WEEK, THEY HAVE TRIED REPLACING THE HEADLIGHTS BUT I FEAR IT IS A DESIGN FLAW. I PICKED UP THE CAR THIS EVENING AND WHEN I STARTED DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD I HAD TO DOUBLE CHECK TO CONFIRM THE HEADLIGHTS WERE ON. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER, THE GENERAL MANAGER ALSO ACKNOWLEDGED THE HEADLIGHTS LOOKED LIKE A PROBLEM. THE CAR WAS PURCHASED NEW SO I WOULD EXPECTED IT NOT TO HAVE THESE ISSUES. I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY ATTENTION YOU CAN OFFER TO THIS UNSAFE PROBLEM. *TR

Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
The car is less than 6 year old and was driven less than 20,000 miles, no accidents and never off road. Left rear shock was leaking and so was the left rear axle seal, I could not tell how much differential oil was leaked out, but there is quite a lot. I feel that there could be a serious safety concern.

Transmission
Reports naming the automatic or manual transmission, including shifting behaviour, shudder, slipping and transmission control modules.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that on several occasions while driving at various speeds, the transmission inadvertently downshifted into a lower gear, causing the rear wheels to lock up. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the leadframe, valve body, and output shaft sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 126,000.
