2004 Ford F-150 Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2004 Ford F-150, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

IN MID NOVEMBER 2019, I WAS ENTERING MY VEHICLE AND NOTICED THE REAR CENTER GLASS WINDOW COMPLETELY SHATTERED THE MOMENT I OPEN THE TRUCK DOOR FOR NO REASON. NO INDICATION OF AN OBJECT STRIKING OR ANYTHING. THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY STATIONARY IN MY DRIVEWAY. THE TEMPERATURE HAD DROPPED DOWN PAST 20 DEGREES THE DAY THIS HAPPENED. I REPLACED THE ENTIRE REAR WINDOW AND THEN,NOT EVEN A WEEK LATER, THE REAR RIGHT SIDE OF THE WINDOW IS COMPLETELY SHATTERING AND IS ABOUT TO BREAK....THE SAME PROBLEM AGAIN! NOW, I GO OUT TODAY, 12/12/19 TO MY PASSENGER SIDE DOOR WINDOW COMPLETELY SHATTERED FOR NO APPARENT REASON! IN ALL 3 INSTANCES, THE TEMPERATURE DROPPED BELOW 35 DEGREES. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT'S GOING ON AND IT'S DRIVING ME INSANE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHY THE WINDOWS ARE RANDOMLY SHATTERING WHEN THE TEMPERATURE DROPS. NOW I AM ABOUT TO BE OUT I DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH MONEY TO TRY TO REPAIR MY FORD WINDOWS.

The underbody frame is 95% rusted out, this vehicle is available for inspection upon request. I could have been fatally injured, not knowing the under frame was gone, until vehicle was taken in for new tires. The vehicle was inspected by Firestone tire and Gene Butman Ford. There were no warning messages and the problem was first noticed in 2019 and was told the vehicle was unsafe to drive, a hazard and should not be driven.

NHTSA ID 11530913 · filed Jul 7, 2023

The truck has had a complete body frame failure. The entire frame is rusted through with large holes. I am unable to put it on a jack to change the tires. It has failed inspections and has not been inspected since 2019. I have a 1992 ford truck that has NO rust issue on the frame. This year is a complete design failure where they used substandard steel or other garbage. It is a safety hazard.

The contact owns a 2004 Ford F-150. The contact stated while starting his parked vehicle, he found that the vehicle would not start. The contact self-diagnosed and bypassed the starter solenoid using a screwdriver and started the vehicle. The vehicle slipped out of the park and rolled backward. The contact was backed over by the vehicle and had received injuries to his ribs and stomach. He had lacerations and abrasions to his back and chest. The contact was able to get out from under the vehicle and attempted to stop the vehicle which was rolling. The contact jumped into the passenger side and attempted to brake but could not. The contact attempted to push the shift lever into "park" but the gear would not engage. The vehicle rolled and crashed into the rear end of a parked vehicle. The contact's vehicle had damage to the rear bumper and the rear end of the other vehicle had the bumper and trunk crumpled. The police were not called and the contact did not seek medical attention. The contact was able to start the vehicle and drove it to his residence. The contact then examined the undercarriage and determined that the transmission linkage cable had been resting on the doughnut of the exhaust system. The contact stated that the outer cable shell had melted and the metal cable was exposed. The contact diagnosed that the exposed cable had contributed to the vehicle slipping out of gear. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 260,000.

THIS IS CLEARLY A FORD ISSUE AND IS NOW GETTING A GOOD SHARE OF ATTENTION ON YOU TUBE. THERE ARE A LOT OF US OUT THERE WHO HAVE INHERITATED THIS FROM FORD WHO IS IN CONSTANT DENIAL OF IT'S REFUSAL TO ADDRESS AND TAKE CORRECTIVE ACTION TO REPAIR THE BUCKLEING OF THE FRONT END. HOW MANY MORE ACCIDENTS NEED TO HAPPEN OR FORD'S DILIGENCE ON PREVENTITIVE MEASURES MAY JUST SAVE LIVES AND CUSTOMERS. PLEASE HELP IN RESOLVING THIS MANUFACTURING ISSUE.

2004 FORD F150 STARTED UP FINE, DROVE IT FOR 10 MINUTES, SLOWED DOWN AND IT STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION. WOULD NOT START BACK UP, CALLED A TOW TRUCK TO GET THE TRUCK HOME. NEXT DAY, STARTED UP AND DID THE SAME THING, STALLED OUT. THE FUEL PUMP DRIVER MODULE IS CAUSING THIS, ALONG WITH A LOT OF OTHER FORD F150'S. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE! I HAD MY CHILD IN THE TRUCK WHEN IT STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION. THE FPDM GETS CORRODED DUE TO THE BAD POSITIONING OF THE PART.

I get a warning message which indicates the the Crash Sensor is not working on my Ford truck - this component inflates the Air Bag in the event of a crash. The part number for the Crash Sensor is Motorcraft 6L3Z-14B004-AA. I attempted to purchase a replacement Crash Sensor from a local Ford dealer. I was told that Ford no longer makes this part. The parts manager suggested that I check with local aftermarket parts stores; Advance Auto Parts, AutoZone, Fisher and NAPA. Nobody makes an aftermarket Crash Sensor for my vehicle. I also searched Amazon without success. I am therefore driving a vehicle with Air Bags which will not deploy - possibly causing a fatality. It seems like the manufacturer, Ford, should be required to sell replacement Crash Sensors until they become available as an Aftermarket Product.

ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2013 WHILE DRIVING TO WORK ON THE FREEWAY, I FELT SEVERAL "THUMPS" PRIOR TO THE REAR LEFT TIRE ON MY F-150 BLOW. THERE WAS NO LOAD IN THE TRUCK NOR WAS I TOWING. I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY GET ONTO THE SHOULDER. AAA RESPONDED AND ATTEMPTED TO CHANGE THE TIRE. HE WAS UNABLE, AS SOME OF THE TIRE TREAD WAS WRAPPED AROUND THE AXLE. WE ALSO OBSERVED THE PARKING BRAKE CABLE BROKEN. A TOW TRUCK WAS THEN DISPATCHED TO MOVE MY F-150 TO A GARAGE. DAMAGE NOTED TO THE TRUCK WAS A SNAPPED PARKING BRAKE CABLE AND A KINKED HYDRAULIC LINE. I AUTHORIZED THE GARAGE TO REPAIR THE BRAKE SYSTEM AND GET MY TRUCK BACK ON THE ROAD. BY THE TIME THEY WERE ABLE TO GATHER THE REPAIR PARTS, IT WAS THE FOLLOWING WEDNESDAY (DAY BEFORE THANKSGIVING) WHEN I ABLE TO GET IT BACK. FIRST THING I NOTICED WAS THE BROKEN TRAILER ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR ON THE BUMPER. DISCUSSIONS WITH THE TOW COMPANY AND THE GARAGE DETERMINED THAT THE DAMAGE WAS CAUSED BY FLYING RUBBER. THAT WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON I TOOK THE TRUCK TO DISCOUNT TIRE TO HAVE THE DAMAGED TIRE REPLACED UNDER THE ROAD HAZARD WARRANTY I HAD PURCHASED FROM THEM. EXAMINATION OF THE REMAINING THREE LTX M/S TIRES REVEALED ANOTHER TIRE WITH A DELAMINATION BULGE. DISCOUNT REPLACED TWO OF THE TIRES UNDER THE WARRANTY WITH LTX M/S2?S, AND I PURCHASED TWO MORE. I DID NOT WANT TO TAKE ANY MORE RISKS WITH THE REMAINING LTX M/S'S. *TR

AT TIMES THE VIBRATION WAS VIOLENT, SHAKING THE WHOLE TRUCK. DROVE ANOTHER 10 MILES WITHOUT ANY ISSUES AND THE VIBRATION WOULD START AGAIN, LOOKED ON LINE AND THERE WERE SEVERAL POSTS IDENTIFYING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH OTHER FORD TRUCKS. *TR

TO BEGIN WITH I HAD TO HAVE ALL 4 WINDOWS REPAIRED. THE MECHANISM THAT RAISES AND LOWERS THE WINDOWS BROKE. SINCE THIS WAS BOUGHT AS A USED VEHICLE, THERE WAS NO WARRANTY. SO I PD. $150. TO $175.00 EACH. WAS TOLD FORD KNEW OF THIS PROBLEM BUT SINCE IT WASN'T A "SAFETY FACTOR" NO RECALL WAS ISSUED. I FEEL LIKE THIS IS QUITE UNFAIR TO THE CONSUMER. WE PURCHASE A VEHICLE THAT HAS A GOOD REPUTATION AND THEN ARE TOLD THAT THIS EXPENSE IS OUR BABY TO TAKE CARE OF. I FEEL LIKE THIS WAS VERY UNFAIR TO THIS CONSUMER. I HAVE PURCHASED FORDS FOR YEARS WITH NO COMPLAINTS UNTIL NOW. ALSO, THE HEADLIGHTS DEVELOPED A LEAK AND FILLED WITH WATER THUS SHORTING OUT MY RIGHT HEADLIGHT,AND IS SLOWLY DOING THE SAME TO THE LEFT ONE. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT JUST THE BURNED OUT BULBS CANNOT BE REPLACED,THAT THE WHOLE ASSEMBLY HAD TO BE REPLACED AND THIS IS AT A COST OF APPROX. $175 TO $200. PER ASSEMBLY. THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS. ALSO,THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH WHAT USED TO BE "POINTS & PLUGS" WHICH ARE NOW A "COIL" ASSEMBLY. THIS PROBLEM DEVELOPED APPROX. 6 MONTHS AGO. ACCORDING TO THE READOUTS I HAVE GOTTEN, THE #1 PLUG IS MISFIRING APPROX. EVERY 1,000 REVOLUTIONS WHICH CAUSES A MISS IN THE ENGINE AND WAS VERY ALARMING TO ME SINCE I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY ABOUT 200-250 MILES FROM HOME, TRAVELING BY MYSELF. SO, ANOTHER EXPENSE IS LOOMING. I REALIZE THERE ARE EXPENSES TO OWNING A VEHICLE. I DO NOT EXPECT TO NOT HAVE ANY PROBLEMS OR REPAIRS WITH MY VEHICLE,BUT I DID NOT ANTICIPATE THIS MANY. NOR DID I EXPECT THE COST OF THE REPAIR PARTS ALONE TO BE SO OUTRAGEOUS. I AM ON A FIXED INCOME AND HAD I ANTICIPATED THESE PROBLEMS I WOULDN'T & #8203; HAVE MADE THIS PURCHASE. I TRULY LOVE MY TRUCK, BUT IS THERE ANYWAY THESE OTHER REPAIRS CAN BE DONE FOR A LESSER AMT? I'VE ALREADY PD. TO REPLACE MOTOR & ROTORS IN ALL 4 WINDOWS. ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE ME WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANK YOU. WITH HEADLIGHT SELECTOR SWITCH IN THE AUTO POSITION THE HEADLIGHTS CAN SUDDENLY TURN-OFF WHILE DRIVING. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW AND HAVE ALWAYS HAD THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH IN THE AUTO POSITION SINCE DAY ONE. WHEN DRIVING AT NIGHT THE HEADLIGHTS SUDDENLY SHUT-OFF WHILE GOING DOWN THE HIGHWAY, VERY NEARLY LOST CONTROL OF VEHICLE WHEN TRYING TO PULL OVER AND STOP. THE PARK LIGHTS STILL WERE FUNCTIONING AND GOT THE HEADLIGHTS BACK ON BY SWITCHING THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH TO THE MANUAL POSITION. PER DISCUSSION WITH DEALER BELIEVE THE BODY CONTROL MODULE QUIT WORKING. SPECIFICALLY, A RELAY IN THE BCM HAS FAILED BUT IS NOT REPLACEABLE. REPAIR COST IS OVER $400.00 TO CHANGE MODULE. CAN'T AFFORD RIGHT NOW TO FIX. RESEARCH ON INTERNET FOUND NUMEROUS OTHER SIMILAR FAILURES/SYMPTOMS BUT NOT CLEAR IF HAPPENED WHILE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN. *TR
