2017 Ford Fusion Hybrid Steering Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the steering system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Steering reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

While traveling down the road, suddenly the steering gets hard to turn and the antilock brake system goes out. Usually, you can correct the problem by stomping on the brake or turning the car off and back on. Several warnings come up including Advancetrac failure. It’s a very dangerous situation when your power steering goes out while traveling down the road. This same issue has occurred more than 5 times.

The steering wheel has been loose for a couple years and seems to be getting worse. There is a lot of play in the steering wheel. I know there have been recalls on other models and it seems like my car is affected as well.

I had just left my sons school and was on my way to pick up my daughter. In the middle of making a left turn into oncoming traffic, my steering wheel locked on me making it hard to complete the turn. Cars were approaching from both directions and honking at me to get out the way. I looked at the dash and noticed a message saying service advance trac. Then another came on saying no bill start assist. Then the traction lights came on. I was able to safely move out the way. I had 2 mechanics look at it. One said it was the steering rack and another said the electronic steering wasn’t communicating with the cars computer system. The one that said the communication was off plugged the car into some type of gadget and the car was working fine for a month or so. Then it happened again. I need my car but I am also afraid to drive it because of this.
