2014 Ford Taurus Exterior lighting Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the exterior lighting system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Exterior lighting reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Taurus. The contact stated that upon being pulled over by local police, he became aware that his rear license plate lamp was out. The contact also stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, he heard wind noise in the interior of the vehicle. After a visual inspection, he became aware that the rear driver's side door latch mechanism failed to secure the door closed. No warning lights were illuminated. After investigating the failures, the contact related them to NHTSA Campaign Number 20V331000 (Exterior Lighting) and NHTSA Campaign Number 14V285000 (Latches, Locks, Linkages), but the VIN was not included in either recall. This vehicle was sold to me with a not for sale in states requiring California emissions, no governor on the vehicle as well faulty lighting mechanisms. The fuel pump is fluctuating and the car is a danger to myself and those around me. I consulted with a independent licensed mechanic who confirmed these defaults. No warning lights no messages and the dealer did not point out these flaws. I discovered this issue after getting some routine maintenance done on the vehicle

Without any warning or warning lights the electronic power steering system failed, and the turn signal will not remain on unless held manually (new problem that started when the power steering failed). It is very hard to turn without it, and I am a strong man, it's nearly impossible to turn with one hand so the turn signal can also be operated. Only 39000 miles on the vehicle.

NIGHT DRIVING IS UNSAFE DUE TO THE NONEXISTENCE OF PERIPHERAL LIGHTING. WHEN STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN ATTEMPTING A TURN IT IS COMPLETELY DARK, AND ONLY LIT WHEN THE CAR HAS COMPLETED THE TURN. WE CANNOT DRIVE THE CAR AFTER DARK DUE TO THIS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS CONDITION. *TR

THE HEADLIGHTS ARE VERY LIMITED DURING NIGHT DRIVING. THERE IS A VERY DEFINED LINE BETWEEN PROJECTED LIGHT AND SURROUNDING DARKNESS. WHEN TRAVELING UP OR DOWN EVEN THE SLIGHTEST SLOPE, THE LIGHTS POINT DOWN INTO THE ROAD DIRECTLY AHEAD, GIVING NO VIEW OR REACTION TIME OF POSSIBLE OBSTACLES, PEOPLE, ANIMALS OR STALLED/PARKED CARS. THERE IS NO PERIPHERAL LIGHTING TOWARDS THE FRONT QUARTER SO WHEN A TURN ONTO AN INTERSECTING ROADWAY OR DRIVEWAY IS NECESSARY, IT IS COMPLETELY DARK AND ANY OBJECTS, PEOPLE OR ANIMALS CANNOT BE SEEN. THIS IS THE MOST DANGEROUS NIGHT-DRIVING I HAVE EVER DONE IN ANY AUTO/TRUCK. *TR

IT WOULD SEEM SOMEONE WOULD LOOK INTO THE PLASTIC HEAD LIGHTS ON ALL MODELS OF CARS. AFTER A FEW YEARS THE HEAD LIGHT COVERS GET COVERED WITH SOMETHING THAT SEEMS TO DIM THE HEAD LIGHTS BY 50%. THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM THAT MAY BE CAUSING NIGHT TIME ACCIDENTS. *TR
