2015 GMC Sierra 1500 Airbags Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the airbag system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Airbags reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Crash reported

The contact owns a 2015 GMC Sierra 1500. While traveling on a two-lane highway at approximately 55 MPH, another vehicle suddenly turned into the contact's lane, resulting in a severe frontal "T-bone" collision. The force of the impact caused the other vehicle to be propelled into a ditch, while the contact's vehicle remained on the roadway. Despite the significant nature of the crash and the speed involved, no air bags deployed. The dealer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 218,000.

My son's 2015 GMC Sierra side impact air bags went off while he was driving. He had no impact. He thought he hit a small pot hole but after driving back on the road, it was recently paved so it was not a pot hole. He guessed it was the edge of the road from the recent paving that he hit. He heard a loud noise like a gun shot. His cabin filled up with smoke and the side impact air bags when off. When he took the truck to the GM Dealership, it gave a code for front air bag deployment due to impact. But the side air bags went off and there was no impact. The only damage to the truck is the deployed side airbags and the locked seatbelts. He has a warranty but they kicked it to GM. Warranty stated that if they fixed it, they were worried that it would happen again. We filed a claim with GM. After GM sent three different inspectors out and over 5 weeks later, they denied the claim. They have also not sent the inspection reports as requested. My son did not have this truck for the first three months he owned it because GM could not find the faulty code causing transmission issues. I am worried the air bags deployment will happen again while he is driving at a high speed and cause a serious wreck.

Attempts to get the part replaced have been met with long delays in gets the parts necessary even though the dealer tells me they show plenty in their warehouse in another state. I first called on 3/29/23 and was told 1-8 weeks. I called again on 6/21/23 and was told they submitted the order again on 5/11/23 and would do so again today. I tried a second dealer in St. Louis and was told the same thing about expecting months of delays on these parts. This recall is from 2022 and if parts are available, why am I not able to get the repairs completed?

I took my vehicle into Clay Cooley, 1251E airport Frwy, Irving Tx. 75062 for oil change, state inspection and recall N202324251. They indicated on the repair invoice that the recall had been completed along with the oil change and inspection on 04/08/2022. However, according to NHTSA on 05/02/2022, the recall is still open for my vin #. I do not know if there is a delay with the vendor reporting the recall work, but I would like to know if it has been done or not.

General Motors sent out email to all GM Dealers on 7/1/2021 regarding recall N202324251 which stated until further notice the involved vehicles that are in dealers' possession new or used inventory must be held and cannot be delivered to customers, dealer traded, etc. I traded for this vehicle on 12/3/2021. Called dealership on 2/10/22 to no avail after I received this email about the vehicle I had traded for. I Called General Motors on 2/11/2022 spoke to Christian in customer service. On 2/14/2022 problem was turned over to Kianna in regional per Christian. Left several meassages for Kianna on 2/14/2022. She returned my call on 2/15/2022 and said she would start buy back and that another department handles the buy back, but they have to go through her and that she would call on 2/17/2022 to let me know what was going on with the buy back. She did not call back.Have called several times and left messages since the 17th. Finally got to talk with her on 2/23/2022 for 5 minutes and was told that buy back had to be approved first and was put on hold for 1 hour while she looked up the case on her computer. I am not driving this vehicle.since it states that roof rail can explode while sitting idle. I want a full refund and the dealer to pick up the vehicle.

GM issued a recall notice on July 1, 2021, regarding the rear curtain airbags in my Sierra. To this date (12/27/21), they have still not provided an ETA for getting this remedied. I called the dealership in September, to which they stated it would be another month before they could address it. I am wanting to be proactive to get this issue remedied, but the delay is unacceptable. I am escalating this to get some traction.
