A trim piece under my hood and above my grille on my 2023 GMC Sierra SLT 1500 flew off and over my windshield this morning during a heavy wind and rain storm. There was no previous damage to the front of my vehicle.
Upper bezel of front grille blew off driving down the hwy landing in oncoming lane of traffic. This is a known problem to GMC on late produced 2022 model year and issued a safety recall #XXX to replace the bezel and reinforce mounting points. I bought my 2023 GMC XXX and it was made in [XXX] so good chance it was made in 2022 and I could of had one of the faulty grilles. If not GMC still has a problem with upper grilles detaching while driving. I have talked to my dealer and GMC customer satisfaction with no help offered. I have bought a new grille and installed it. The contact owns a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving 60 MPH, the front grille shutter detached. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was determined that the shutter had detached due to defective retention clips. The contact was informed that the entire front grille assembly needed to be replaced. The dealer associated the failure with a recall. The failure mileage was approximately 123,500.
The front upper grill broke and flew off the truck at highway speeds nearly causing a wreck. Zero previous damage. Simply broke at the connecting points without cause. . Pretty unreasonable for a 75000 dollar truck to have the upper grill just dislocate itself and nearly cause a major wreck at highway speeds
On September 11, 2026, while driving my 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate at approximately 70 mph on the Buckman Bridge (US 295 S), the painted upper grille/hood molding located between the hood and the top of the grille suddenly detached from the vehicle. Before I purchased the vehicle, it had sustained damage to the front fascia during transportation/shipping. As part of the repair prior to my purchase, the upper trim piece in this area was replaced by General Motors. To my knowledge, the replacement was performed by GM as part of the pre-delivery repair. The vehicle had not been involved in a collision or impact prior to the failure while I owned it. The component detached while the vehicle was traveling at approximately 70 mph on a bridge and entered active traffic. I was unable to determine what happened to the component after it entered traffic or whether it struck another vehicle. At the time of the incident, I did not initially realize exactly which component had detached. I subsequently determined that the missing part was the painted upper grille/hood molding/front upper grille deflector. I am reporting this because I have since learned that GM issued safety recall N242490120 / NHTSA recall 25V060 for certain 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles involving the front upper grille deflector. That recall describes fracture of the attachment points and the possibility of the deflector completely detaching while the vehicle is being driven. My vehicle is a 2023 model, but the component and reported failure appear substantially similar. The failure occurred at approximately 70 mph and caused a large exterior body component to enter active traffic, creating a potential hazard to other motorists. I am requesting that NHTSA document this incident and investigate whether the defect addressed by recall 25V060 also affects 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, including vehicles in which the upper trim piece had previously been replaced by GM.
The contact owns a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving 65 MPH with her children in the rear seats, the top of the chrome front grille detached and damaged the windshield. The contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V060000 (STRUCTURE); however, the VIN and the model year was not included in the recall. The approximate failure mileage was 51,350.
The upper chrome grille molding fractured at the clips and completely detached at highway speeds, creating a dangerous flying projectile. This is an identical material failure to NHTSA Campaign 25V-060. The defective part or assembly process clearly extends into the 2023 model year.
I was driving down the George W. Bush Highway in Dallas, Texas, and the front top bezel above my grill flew off and went over the top of my truck. I have no idea if it landed safely or damaged other vehicles behind me because I was in very thick traffic. This is extremely dangerous as I could injured people driving behind me potentially impaling someone as I was going 70 mph per the speed limit. Just both are being recalls on the 2022 GMC model of my truck. The dealership refused to fix this for me and quoted me over $500 to get this repaired.
A GM warranty engine replacement was performed at Heyward Allen GMC in [XXX] on XXX at 70,415 miles. We purchase the vehicle on XXX with 73,904 miles and after driving for a month started having multiple malfunction indicator lights displaying, and experienced a no start condition. We took the vehicle to the Don Ledford GMC dealer in [XXX], and they performed a high level inspection. They found missing mounting brackets, loose wiring harness wires, broken and missing bolts. Issues all related to an engine replacement procedure. Deeming the vehicle unsafe to operate. The origin dealer that was paid through GMC to replace the engine is now refusing any responsibility for resolving these issues. Technicians have video evidence of the workmanship issues, documenting the sub- par repair work performed during the engine change. The vehicle now sits at the Don Ledford GMC dealer awaiting an estimated $4400 repair, before the vehicle is safe to operate on the road. The contact owns a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving 70 MPH and looking in the driver’s side mirror, the contact became aware that an unknown object had detached from the vehicle. The contact was unaware that the chrome front grille deflector had detached until arriving at the residence. The dealer was contacted, and the vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed, and the contact was informed that the chrome front grille deflector needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V060000 (STRUCTURE); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was 48,210.
while driving my 2023 GMC Sierra AT4 at highway speed, the front grille piece (GM part 84957848, roughly 3 feet or longer) detached from the vehicle without warning and flew off into the roadway. The piece landed on the shoulder rather than in a travel lane, but given its size, it could easily have struck another vehicle or caused a serious accident if it had landed differently. I was then forced to stop on the highway shoulder to retrieve the part, which put me in an unsafe roadside situation with traffic passing at highway speed. This part had all its retaining clips still intact, indicating a failure of the part/mounting itself rather than a missing clip or improper installation. part number 86274905
August 5th, 2026, I was driving South on I-55 between Hammond and Ponchatoula at 70 mph when the top grill trim (Bezel) flew off, hit (and cracked) the windshield, and landed somewhere behind my traveling vehicle.
The upper grille trim piece came off while driving down I20 between Hudson Oaks and Willow Park. I was doing between 60-65 mph. It could’ve hit other vehicles behind me, or to the side of me. This piece is a known issue and the 2022’s have a recall but not the 2023 model years. No signs of this being about to break.
The upper grill chrome trim blew off at highway speed. The plastic brackets holding it in place sheared off. This was a known defect resulting in 70,000 recalled trucks for the prior year model (2022), but for some reason isn't covered for 2023. Same exact issue
Whilst driving down the highway at 65 mph the plastic front grill deflector broke off and slammed into my windshield and the vehicle behind me. Luckily the vehicle behind me sustained no damage other than how frightened she and her children were. This is a known issue and was subject to a recall for the 2022 GMC Sierra Denali's. Nothing has changed between the 2 models as far as I can tell and it's the exact same grill deflector. When I informed the dealership of this they told me it would be a $950 repair out of pocket. First of all, it is unacceptable for a $75,000 vehicle to have a plastic component that can just break off and become an immediate and unavoidable hazard on the highways. The recall MUST be extended to these vehicles. I have reached out to GM and they confirmed it would be an out of pocket expense, but I am escalating the situation. Thank you!
I started to notice detached broken plastic pieces behind the upper grill housing. I notified the dealer, and in the meantime of trying to figure out what to do, the upper grill housing came detached when I was driving down the highway and flew up and back onto the highway. Sounds similar to safety recall N242490120, which was for 2022 model year trucks. Not sure why this stopped at 2022, but it happed on my 2023.
While driving southbound on Interstate 95 in Florida, the front upper grille molding/deflector completely detached from my 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE at highway speed and separated from the vehicle, creating a potential road hazard for other motorists. Prior to the complete separation, I noticed that the upper grille molding was becoming loose and lifting away from the vehicle. I stopped and photographed the component and its attachment areas. The photographs show failed/broken attachment points while the molding was still partially attached to the truck. Later, while driving on I-95, the remaining attachments failed and the entire molding separated from the vehicle. The part could not safely be recovered from the interstate. The vehicle recently underwent dealer service involving the active grille shutter/damper area near this component. I cannot determine whether that service contributed to the failure, so I am reporting it as part of the vehicle's recent service history rather than asserting it as the cause. I subsequently became aware that NHTSA Recall 25V-060 / GM Recall N242490120 addresses separation of a front upper grille deflector on certain GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles due to fractured attachment points. My vehicle is a 2023 model and does not presently appear to be included in that recall. Because my vehicle experienced a similar failure mode resulting in the exterior component completely separating at highway speed, I am submitting this complaint so NHTSA can determine whether this condition may extend beyond the vehicles currently covered by the recall. While driving my 2023 GMC Sierra on the highway at highway speeds, a piece of the front grille suddenly detached and flew off the vehicle. There was no prior accident, impact, or external damage to the grille; the part failed and unclipped on its own due to defective manufacturing or weak retaining clips. This creates a severe safety hazard as the flying debris could have struck the windshield of the vehicles traveling behind me, potentially causing a major accident. I am aware that the 2022 GMC Sierra has an active recall (N242490120) for this exact same issue, yet GM is refusing to cover this 2023 model under warranty or recall despite presenting identical component failure.
My grill deflector suddenly flew off, hit my windshield a flew into a semi hauling oil field equipment. We both pulled over and found no significant damage to his truck. I have a two inch scratch on my windshield and possibly lite hood scratching. Dealership required me to pay $390.73 but said I would be reimbursed for my losses. It never happened. Now I’m fighting with GM to get some resolution. This could be deadly for a motorcycle rider for sure. Hundreds of people reporting same issue on 22 and 23 Sierras and AT4’s.
The grill deflector flew off while driving on the highway. I was driving roughly 55 mph. It is available now, but will be getting repaired in the near future. My concern is that it appears that this was an issue with the 2022 models and it’s still an issue on the 2023. The safety issue is if there was a vehicle or motorcycle behind me that it could have harmed whoever could have been driving behind me, caused and accident, or damaged their vehicle or mine in the process. The service advisor (J.R.) told me that “sometimes the wind gets underneath the bezel and makes it snap”. No it has not been inspected by any of this mentioned. No warning signs prior to the incident.
The front grille bezel mounting clips broke and it started to fly off while driving on the highway. Luckily, I was able to pull over before the last clip broke and took it off before it became a spear flying at the cars behind me. There is an active recall for this issue for the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 models, but not 2023/2024 models (same body I believe).
The upper top grille mold detached from the vehicle while traveling at highway speed (about 65 mph). It hit the hood, which it scratched and flew off into the air, above the vehicle and in the way of oncoming traffic. Fortunately, no one was behind me so the part did not hit another vehicle. Vehicle had around 65k miles when this occured. I have contacted a local dealership who informed me that while many similar vehicles have a recall for this issue my VIN is not included in that recall.
The upper hood trim that sits above the grill, flew off on the interstate at approx 80 mph. Upon research this is a common problem for this make and model in years of 22-24. GM has a service bulletin for this issue as well as the NHTSA. For this particular failure. There was no warning and when I contacted GM they were unwilling to assist as "service bulletins" are not recalls and the vehicle is out of warranty. There was no warning, no indicator, it just blew off and I had no idea until I got home and the piece was missing. I was unable to locate the part on the interstate, however I was able to keep all of the pieces attached to the vehicle for evidence and support. I am beside myself anyone thought this was acceptable to sustain the force of air flow!
The front grille/hood trim flew off driving down the highway. No, it is not available the cheap plastic shattered. My safety was put at risk b/c parts are flying off the truck that should never. More importantly other people's safety is put at risk b/c a long SHARP plastic piece is flying off a large truck driving down the highway!! Yes, Glenn Polk has seen the damage and can confirm. No, no one else has inspected it yet but you gladly can, it doesn't take a genius to see that the cheap POS plastic was terrible engineering by GM. There were no warnings or indications that the piece was even loose.
